School reopening nears in Telangana, but 8k buses not yet fit to ferry students
According to data from the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), there are 25,677 buses operated by educational institutions. However, only 17,020 of these buses have fitness certificates so far.
In Greater Hyderabad alone, over 3,000 school buses still need to undergo mandatory fitness tests, despite the Regional Transport Authority having made this facility available for the past three weeks.
The Motor Vehicles (MV) rules mandate that school managements maintain valid fitness documentation for their vehicles.
Furthermore, these buses must be equipped with emergency exits and fire safety equipment.
The RTA conducts annual inspections to assess vehicle condition before issuing fitness certificates, which are required prior to the commencement of transport services for the academic year.
In addition, the RTA will scrutinise auto-rickshaws and omni buses, having found that many of these vehicles are operating beyond their permitted passenger capacity.

From June 12, surprise checks will be carried out to determine whether these vehicles meet fitness standards, avoid overloading, and are not unauthorisedly used for transporting pupils.
The Transport department has issued instructions to all District Transport Officers (DTOs) and Regional Transport Officers (RTOs) to conduct a special drive across their respective jurisdictions, focusing exclusively on vehicles used to transport school children.
They have been instructed to check for valid fitness certificates, compliance with seating capacity norms, and the unauthorised use of private vehicles for commercial or hire purposes. Vehicles found to be unfit or dangerously overloaded are to be taken off the road, with proper records maintained of all inspections and violations.
"School buses over 15 years old must not be operated. If such ageing or unfit vehicles are used to transport students, not only will the vehicles be seized, but legal action will be initiated against the managements. The responsibility for maintaining vehicles operated by educational institutions lies with school management. The buses must be kept in good condition, and experienced drivers must be employed," said M Chandrasekhar Goud, joint transport commissioner (Vigilance & Enforcement).

Watch out for route diversions during Tazia procession
Indore: In view of the Muharram procession scheduled for Sunday, the city traffic police have issued a diversion plan to ensure smooth vehicular movement and public safety. Once all Tazias have entered Karbala Maidan, depending on the traffic pressure, private vehicles heading towards Mhow Naka may be directed via Hemu Colony, Harsiddhi, Macchi Bazaar, Yeshwant Road, and Rajmohalla. Nashik city road accidents down by 25%, fatalities by 15% compared to last year
1 2 3 Nashik: The city saw a marginal decrease in fatal road accidents and related deaths between Jan to June this year compared to the same period last year, according to data from Nashik City Police. Last year recorded 106 road accidents and 110 fatalities by the end of June, while this year had 80 accidents and 93 deaths, marking a reduction of approximately 25% in accidents and 15% in fatalities. Senior police officers attributed this decline to effective traffic management and speed-calming measures, including the installation of speed breakers on various roads. Senior inspector Tushar Adhavoo of the city crime branch unit 1 said, "There are certain spots in the city prone to accidents. Thus, on the guidance of our senior officers, the traffic police are stationed at such spots to ensure that people are driving vehicles within speed limits, and there is no signal jumping or wrong-side driving. " Following the Mirchi hotel accident in Oct 2022, the traffic police implemented several speed-calming initiatives such as setting up road signals and constructing speed breakers throughout the city. Vizag to get AI-powered traffic system, facial recognition for policing
Visakhapatnam: Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) commissioner Ketan Garg emphasized the critical role of artificial intelligence (AI) in streamlining traffic management across the city. He made the remarks during a review meeting with additional deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Ramaraju and other traffic officials. Garg said plans are underway to implement AI-based road traffic management systems to efficiently handle traffic in the city. "For this purpose, reputed software companies from across the country have been invited. Companies such as Metafusion and NEC from Noida, Data Corp from Bengaluru, CMS Computers from Mumbai, and Brihaspati Technologies from Hyderabad have come forward and initiated pilot projects in Visakhapatnam. These companies gave their presentations at the collectorate in the presence of the Vizag MP M Sribharat, district collector MN Harendhira Prasad, city police commissioner Shankha Brata Bagchi, among others," said Garg.
