African animated series 'Iyanu' set for Showmax debut this June
This thrilling series draws deeply from Nigerian culture, music, and mythology. THE STORY OF 'IYANU'
It tells the story of a teenage orphan who discovers her divine powers and her destiny to save the ancient kingdom of Yorubaland.
Iyanu follows its courageous heroine as she navigates a magical world steeped in Yoruba traditions. While yearning for a normal life, Iyanu's world turns upside down when a looming threat awakens powers.
These powers have been unseen since the legendary Age of Wonders, according to Shomax Stories.
Accompanied by her friends Biyi, Toye, and a magical leopard named Ekun, she embarks on an epic quest to uncover the source of evil and save her people.
The series is adapted from Roye Okupe's acclaimed graphic novel Iyanu: Child of Wonder , published by YouNeek Studios and Dark Horse Comics.
This is the same powerhouse behind The Umbrella Academy and Hellboy . Roye Okupe, born and raised in Nigeria, serves as creator, executive producer, and showrunner.
He said, 'One of the reasons I started YouNeek Studios and created Iyanu is because I grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, watching superhero stories on DStv.
To now see Iyanu launching on Showmax across 44 African countries is truly a full-circle moment.
I'm beyond thrilled that kids, adults, and families across the continent will get to see a superhero who looks, sounds, and feels like them'.
Produced by Lion Forge Entertainment, the Emmy-winning studio behind the Oscar®-winning Hair Love , Iyanu boasts an all-African voice cast.
The voice cast is led by award-winning Serah Johnson as Iyanu.
The cast also features African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) winner and Vogue US cover star Adesua Etomi-Wellington.
Three-time AMAA nominee Stella Damasus, multi-award-winning Blossom Chukwujekwu, and Shaffy Bello, known for The Black Book, also join.
Nigerian Grammy nominee Yemi Alade lends her voice to the theme song, expressing her pride.
'Iyanu showcases the resilience, the beauty and the strength of our culture. Growing up, I always hoped to watch cartoons with characters that looked and sounded like me. Right now, it's happening, and I'm really happy to be part of it'.
Since its US debut in April 2025, Iyanu soared to become the #1 series on Cartoon Network. The show was ranked in the top 10 kids and family series on Max. It has already been greenlit for a second season and two linked feature films.
Screenrant praised it as 'The Last Airbender and Black Panther hybrid you didn't know you needed,' highlighting its unique blend of fantasy and African heritage.
Dr Busola Tejumola, Executive Head of General Entertainment at MultiChoice, remarked, ' Iyanu brings Nigerian culture and mythology to life excitingly and authentically.
We are proud to be the home of its African premiere. I can't wait for audiences across the continent to experience this epic adventure on Showmax.'
This launch marks a significant milestone for African animation. The show joins the ranks of other award-winning productions like Tabby McTat and The Smeds and The Smoos .
These shows are also available on Showmax.
Iyanu offers a fresh and vibrant superhero tale that resonates with African identity and pride. It's a chance to see a hero who looks like us, speaks to our cultures, and celebrates our stories.
With its captivating animation, rich storytelling, and all-star African cast, Iyanu promises to be a must-watch hit this June on Showmax.

Chidimma mocks news of Miss SA organisation 'downfall'?
Chidimma Adetshina, the South African-born Miss Universe runner-up, is laughing off news that the Miss SA pageant has been postponed and is under new management. The news comes days after pageant CEO Stephanie Weil resigned from her post. In the past year, the Cape Town model – whose father is Nigerian, and whose mother is Mozambican – has been the target of a Home Affairs investigation. Last year, Chidimma stepped down from her position as Miss SA finalist. A few weeks later, she won the title of Miss Universe Nigeria and competed at the international pageant, where she was crowned runner-up. In a press statement posted on pageant fanpage @misssafandom, the Miss SA organisation announced that the finale would be postponed from August to a later date in 2025. This was one to 'ensure the alignment with international and other global events.' Since Stephanie Weil stepped down as CEO, the pageant has been taken under the wing of Africa Fashion International, which has vowed to 'embark on this strategic journey together, leveraging our unique strengths to drive growth and innovation.' In the comments section, pageant fans were mostly unsurprised by the news, given the delay in announcing the Top 30. Also commenting was Chidimma Adetshina, who posted a meme of a man suppressing a smile. When one follower accused the pageant queen of being 'petty,' she responded, 'I'm just smiling. I've given you way too much access to me, and I'm sure that's your biggest achievement this year. Go rest, bye!' Chidimma Adetshina has reacted to news of Miss SA's postponement. The beauty queen is a former 2024 finalist. Image via screenshot: @misssafandom Late last year, the Department of Home Affairs revealed it would be investigating the mother of Chidimma Adetshina, Anabela Rungo, who had unlawfully registered her as a South African at birth via fraudulent documents. Earlier this year, Rungo was arrested and charged with violating the Immigration and Identification Act. She has since been released on bail. Both Chidimma and her mother have had their SA ID and passports revoked. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON MISS SA'S POSTPONEMENT? PFL Africa delivers the most spectacular night of fighting in Africa, ever
Victorious Costello van Steenis celebrates his PFL Middleweight title win against Johnny Eblen at Grand West Casino and Entertainment World last night. Photo: PFL Image: PFL It's official! South Africa is Mixed Martial Arts crazy! And the Professional Fighters League helped prove that last night as history was made in the Grand Arena down in Goodwood, Cape Town! Almost 5,000 people entered the entertainment venue last night and lent their voices to an action-packed night of fights as the PFL Africa and Champions Series: Road to Dubai served as a feast for starved Cape Town MMA fans. One of the many highlights of the night was when former UFC Lightweight champion and global superstar Khabib Nurmagomedov stepped inside the Grand Arena to corner his two Russian Athletes. The Dagestani's presence was met with an incredible roar as fans shouted 'Khabib!, Khabib!, Khabib!' continuously as PFL President Donn Davis took videos and content of the crowd, a good sign for the future of African MMA. Next Stay Close ✕ 'PFL Africa is here to stay,' said Davis, who looks to build this franchise and help bolster African MMA by shaping global superstars through the 'win and advance' format, which is the future and only sustainable template. While the UFC continues to deliver lip service and tease the African MMA community with this major 'UFC Africa' show, the PFL put its shoulder to the wheel and made things happen, appeasing millions of fans, but more importantly, creating invaluable opportunities for African athletes. PFL Africa rolled out its first leg of the 2025 Bantamweight and Heavyweight tournament as South Africa's Nkosi Ndebele, Zimbabwe's Simbarashe Hokonya, Algeria's Karim Henniene, and Angola's Boule Godogo advanced to the semi-final of the 135-pound tournament. In the Heavyweight division, Maxwell Djantou Nana and Abraham Bably delivered some incredible striking, power, and skill to earn wins via decision and KO, respectively, moving one step closer to the PFL Africa Heavyweight title. While it was not ideal for fans who were baying for more Heavyweight action, South Africa's Justin Clarke and Joffie Houlton both confirmed their slots in the big-boy division after early Doctor stoppages against Jashell Ticha Awa and Abdoulaye Kane, respectively. Clarke moved to 3-0 after doctors advised against Awa coming back out of his corner due to a serious nose injury, which led to a TKO result. Kane was disqualified following an illegal knee to the grounded Houlton not long before the second round. In the main event, Costello Van Steenis pulled off one of the biggest comeback wins in MMA history, submitting previously undefeated Johnny Eblen with just seconds left in the fifth and final round to become the new PFL Middleweight World Champion. Eblen, who had stuck to his bread and butter by rolling out his strong wrestling and grappling game, was seemingly on his way to a unanimous decision win after controlling the fight for the majority of the time. Eblen, known for being a strong starter, dominated the first two rounds and seemed to have tired his opponent who looked to lose some snap in his shots, however, Van Steenis found his second breath in the third and landed some damaging shots opening up the champion who understood that he should avoid striking with Van Steenis - who represents that trademark Dutch Kickboxing culture. In between the last three rounds, Eblen's team and doctors did their best to patch up the damage inflicted, especially a nasty gash on the back of his head. Eblen's every shot for the takedown was met with disdain from the crowd, who responded with boos as they wanted to see some striking exchanges. Every time Van Steenis broke free, the Grand Arena reverberated with celebrations, as a hungry MMA nation found a new gladiator to adopt as their own. In the dying seconds of the fifth round, Van Steenis managed to take Eblen's back and sink in the rear-naked choke, put the former champion to sleep, and shock the MMA world. In the co-main event, 2024 PFL Women's Flyweight Champion Dakota Ditcheva of the United Kingdom put on a striking masterclass as she demolished Sumiko Inaba of the United States to earn a unanimous decision victory. Ditcheva's elite Muay Thai was on full display as she punished Inaba with an arsenal of punches, kicks, knees, elbows, and devastating clinch work. The ultra-tough Inaba was as game as they come, continuing to push forward all fight long. In the end, however, Ditcheva was just too much for the Hawaiian as she cruised to a dominant win. Former Bellator Featherweight Champion AJ McKee of the United States was successful in his return to 145 pounds as he earned a unanimous decision victory over Russia's Akhmed Magomedov. Out to prove that he's still 'the baddest man' in the Featherweight division, McKee turned in a well-rounded performance as he out-struck and out-grappled Magomedov for all three rounds to get the impressive win. The First Round of the inaugural 2025 PFL Africa Tournament continues on Saturday, August 9th, from the Big Top Arena, Carnival City, Johannesburg, South Africa, with fighters in the Featherweight and Welterweight Divisions competing for a shot at glory. The action takes place live via the PFL App in the US. PFL Champions Series Road to Dubai: Cape Town Results: Costello van Steenis (17-3) def.
