Four Springboks who need to impress against BaaBaas to stay in the frame for Italy
The pressure is on new and older Springboks after attack coach Tony Brown said good performances will be required for them to keep their spots.
Attack coach Tony Brown said that Springbok players need to perform well in this Saturday's fixture in order to be granted an opportunity in the match the following weekend.
The Springboks take on the Barbarians invitational team at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday (kick-off 5.10pm) before playing the first of two Tests against Italy, at Loftus, next weekend.
Bok boss Rassie Erasmus named four uncapped players in the matchday squad against the Barbarians, which features a mix of experienced internationals from around the world.
While it is easy to say all four Springbok debutants need to shine, there is enough pressure in Erasmus' 45-man squad for the early season to demand standout performances from some of the stalwarts.
Here are four who'll be keen to impress on Saturday.
Manie Libbok
It will take a while for Libbok to prove to critics that he is worthy of a Springbok jersey after his goal-kicking was so underpar at the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
Playing from the bench for starting flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Libbok gets the nod ahead of Springbok veteran Handré Pollard, who only arrived in camp last week.
While he may not be called on to kick for posts, he could utilise his hallmark cross kicks and play-making to build greater trust and confidence. Especially since he only carried a 50% kicking success rate in this year's URC (slotting one penalty and seven conversions while missing eight kicks).
Marnus van der Merwe
One of the rookies in the line-up on Saturday, the 28-year-old hooker plays from the bench thanks to a breakout season for Scarlets.
The former Cheetahs player slotted in well in his first season at the Welsh side, winning the second-most lineouts in the URC, securing the third-most turnovers, and scoring 10 tries across the URC and Challenge Cup.
His inclusion in the Springboks' early-season squad came at the cost of Johan Grobbelaar, who is increasingly becoming a force for the Bulls, and Stormers youngster André-Hugo Venter.
Van der Merwe will have to follow up his form to show he is not a one-hit wonder, but is worthy of a place in the side.
Asenathi Ntlabakanye
The 26-year-old tighthead prop is also set to make his debut against the Barbarians.
Reportedly weighing over 150kgs while playing for the Lions, he has had to slim down to get himself up to Springbok standard. He also took part in special training sessions with Bok scrum guru Daan Human.
While his size and performances made him a powerhouse for the Joburg side, it remains to be seen how he will do on the highest stage and if he is worthy of a spot ahead of URC SA Player of the Year nominee Wilco Louw.
Damian de Allende
By all rights a Springbok mainstay who will perhaps go down as a national legend — once he reaches 100 Tests. De Allende is starting at inside centre, a position another in-form Springbok usually plays (André Esterhuizen, who is on the bench).
This while Erasmus said 22-year-old Ethan Hooker will also be given opportunities in the centre (with inside being Hooker's most accomplished position).
Double World Cup winner De Allende said he could learn a thing or two from the youngster after an impactful URC campaign. But maybe he will need to ensure he is too good to drop in the squad.

The world champions showed their mettle and were absolutely dominant in the second half to put eight tries past their opponents to claim a famous victory over the invitational side. With it, they won the ninth encounter between them and drew level with wins in the first-ever clash on South African soil. Both sides have won four, while one duel ended in a draw. Despite the wet Cape Town conditions, rain fell right through the clash, and Erasmus' troops acquitted themselves well of their task. For most of the match, they looked sharp on the attack, and defensively they kept the Baabaas out to only concede a try in the dying minutes of the duel. 'I am happy about the win, but there are lots for us to work on,' Erasmus said in his post-match interview. 'To keep them only to seven points and us getting to the score we had, we are happy with that, and no injuries were picked up. Some guys got a hit-out today who haven't played for a while. Other guys do not have a lot of caps. We are glad we came through it. 'For the Barbarians, this was probably the worst conditions to play in. We had to keep some structure, so overall it was satisfying, and now the Test matches start.'

It was the season opener for the Boks, taking on the famed invitational side, and they were looking to get off on the right foot ahead of their incoming series against Italy and Georgia over the next three weeks. In the end it was a solid all-round effort, as they ran in eight tries to one over the BaaBaas, in tricky weather as well with rain falling over most of the game, although as Kolbe explained it wasn't the perfect game and they have plenty to work on. 'It wasn't the best of conditions. So I want to thank the supporters who came out in them to support the Springboks and this wonderful game,' said Kolbe after the match. 'It wasn't the best game from us as a team, but it is a good way to start the season. I am sure there is a lot more we want to improve on, so I am just looking forward to us building on this week by week. 'The message was clear this week. This was a Test match for us, we respect the BaaBaas coming out here, and I know they didn't have a lot of preparation. 'But all the focus was on us and making sure that we get better one percent at a time. So not the best performance, but I think we can take a lot out of tonight.' Man of the match Kolbe was in top form himself, scoring a first half try, while he was almost unplayable in the second, soaring high to field contestable kicks, while he stepped and broke the line on numerous occasions which saw him pick up the man of the match award. 'You don't get a lot of opportunities out wide (in games like this), so you have to go and look for some work on the inside. But I always say you have to give credit to the guys on the inside for making it easier for us which they did today, and that allowed us to capitalise on those opportunities,' said Kolbe. 'The nines were also spot on with their kicking game, which allowed us to get into the (aerial) contest which is what the coaches want. And we have to capitalise on that and create momentum for the forwards.' Irish legend Peter O'Mahoney, who captained the BaaBaas in his final game before retiring, said that they had enjoyed the week in Cape Town and were proud of their effort. 'We knew it would be a very tough Test match against the double world champs. It's always tough coming here (to South Africa) to play. You are always in for a huge physical test and the Springboks showed their class today,' said O'Mahoney. 'We showed some great moments and in the short time we have been together we have had a superb week in Cape Town, and I am incredibly proud of the boys.'

Debutant Tshituka scores twice as Springboks crush BaaBaas
Debutant flanker Vincent Tshituka scored two tries as world champions South Africa launched a 14-match season with a 54-7 victory over the Barbarians in wet and cold Cape Town on Saturday. Hooker Malcolm Marx, winger Cheslin Kolbe, prop Jan-Hendrik Wessels, winger Kurt-Lee Arendse, lock Lood de Jager and centre Damian de Allende were the other try scorers for the Springboks. Fly-half Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu converted two of the three first-half tries before his replacement, Manie Libbok, added the extra points to all five second-half scores. Full-back Melvyn Jaminet claimed the lone try for the Barbarians and converted it in a non-cap exhibition match at Cape Town Stadium. Record four-time Rugby World Cup winners South Africa were ahead within six minutes through a pushover Marx try, led 19-0 by half-time and were in control throughout. "I am unbelievably proud of the boys and how we played under the conditions -- the rain was coming down pretty heavy at one stage," said stand-in South Africa captain Jesse Kriel. "We have had a great two weeks of preparation in Johannesburg with some of the toughest training I have been through in a Springbok camp. "The boys really worked hard in the build-up and I think it showed in the game. I think we are looking good ahead of the Test season." - 'Tough and physical' - Centre Kriel was deputising as skipper for flanker Siya Kolisi, who withdrew from the starting line-up on Friday due to a stiff neck. Barbarians skipper Peter O'Mahony, who retired from Test and club rugby this year, said: "The game against the world champions was as tough and physical as I expected. "The Springboks showed their class and we had a superb week. Cape Town looked after us incredibly well and I am proud of the boys." It did not help the Barbarians' cause that loose forward Lachlan Boshier was sin-binned soon after coming off the bench in the second half following a head-to-head clash with Arendse. During his 10-minute absence, the world champions scored two of their eight tries through Arendse and De Jager, who impressed on his recall after a two-year absence due to illness and injuries. South Africa head coach Rassie Erasmus pledged before the match that his team would treat the match as a Test. The Springboks fulfilled the promise with a structured, limited-risk performance, and man-of-the-match award winner Kolbe and De Jager will be among those satisfied with their form. Renowned for ball-in-hand play, the Barbarians rarely got a chance to demonstrate their skills, but held their own at scrum time against opponents famed for their set-piece work. Among those supporting the Springboks were cricketers Temba Bavuma and Kagiso Rabada, two stars of the World Test Championship final triumph by South Africa over Australia this month. It was a first victory for South Africa over the Barbarians since winning by 10 points in Cardiff 25 years ago.
