FAA Issues Warning With 'Clear Message' Before Drone Test
On Friday, June 13, the Federal Aviation Administration revealed it will conduct drone-detection testing near Santa Teresa, NM from June 16-27.
According to a statement from the FAA, the administration's Center of Excellence for UAS Research, in coordination with U.S. Customs and Border Protection will conduct the testing at Doña Ana County International Jetport. State a local first responders will be on hand for the tests.
This will be the third major drone-detection test planned by the FAA following the first two tests in Alaska and Cape May, NJ. The FAA selected the New Mexico location for its hot and arid climate, which the administration revealed supports its testing objectives.
"The FAA will operate several large drones and about 100 commercial off-the-shelf drones during the two-week period. Testing will take place over the desert and near the old Rio Grande Speedway during the daytime on weekdays only," the FAA announced.
Additional tests are scheduled in Mississippi and North Dakota later this year. The tests are run to help determine the effectiveness of the FAA's technologies and whether they might interfere with administration or aircraft navigation systems.
Before the test runs in New Mexico later this month, the FAA issued a stern message to the public. "The public should not fly recreational drones near this area during the testing period," the administration said before offering a "clear message."
"The FAA receives more than 100 drone-sighting reports near airports each month, and we want to send a clear message that operating drones around airplanes, helicopters, and airports is dangerous and illegal," it said.
The FAA initially chartered the UAS Detection and Mitigation Systems Aviation Rulemaking Committee on March 16, 2023, to advise the agency on safely integrating drone detection and mitigation systems.
After the ARC made 46 recommendations on ensuring systems do not interfere with the safe and efficient operation of the National Airspace System the FAA announced it incorporated many of the recommendations into the administrations work to ensure safety.FAA Issues Warning With 'Clear Message' Before Drone Test first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 14, 2025

Southwest Monsoon 2025 Set To Kickoff With A Tropical Boost Next Week
The annual Southwest monsoon season is getting ready to kick into high gear as July begins. We've already had spurts of heavy rain across parts of the region, including in New Mexico over the last week. Wetter Pattern Ahead: A pattern change will be underway across the western U.S. through the weekend and into next week. The result is that the Northwest will see a modest heat wave that will slowly fade through the week ahead. Underneath that heat dome, a weak low pressure system will approach the Pacific Southwest. This will increase the flow of moisture across the region next week. An extra kick: Extra moisture is likely coming from the tropics. A tropical system is likely to develop south of Mexico through the weekend and into next week. While some details are still uncertain, most computer guidance brings whatever this system becomes closer to Baja California next week with a large cocoon of moisture. (MORE: Further beef up your forecast with our detailed, hour-by-hour breakdown for the next 8 days – only available on our Premium Pro experience.) The monsoon is a seasonal wind direction change, not an individual thunderstorm. Monsoon is a term used in multiple parts of the world that refers to a seasonal wind shift that has wet and dry phases. In the Southwest U.S., winds change from a more westerly direction during the dry phase to a southerly direction during the summertime wet phase, which pumps moisture from the Eastern Pacific and Gulf into the region. The start of the monsoon varies from year to year. June 15 is when the monsoon officially begins, but in many areas, it takes until late June or even July for the coverage of storms to grow. The thunderstorm activity then varies in intensity from day to day or week to week through August and September. The monsoon is the main driver of rain for the Southwest. Most of northwestern Mexico and the southwestern U.S. receive over half of their annual precipitation from the monsoon. The monsoon also brings dust storms, flooding and lightning. Thunderstorms can generate huge dust storms known as haboobs that can lower visibility and cause air quality concerns. Canyons and arroyos can become victim to flash flooding even if it isn't raining. Floodwaters can travel many miles downstream through canyons. Early in the season, prolific lightning can create fires until the ground is moistened. Hurricanes can cause rapid upticks in monsoonal moisture. Occasionally, remnant spin and moisture from former Eastern Pacific tropical storms or hurricanes can be pulled into the Desert Southwest, enhancing heavy rainfall. Two tropical systems – Hurricanes Kay in 2022 and Hilary in 2023 – have caused flooding in California. Severe storm triggers hundreds of flight cancellations at busy Atlanta airport just as holiday travel cranks up
Hundreds of flights have been canceled at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport – the busiest airport in the world – after a severe storm overnight, just as a busy travel period ahead of the Fourth of July gets started. Over 450 flights into and out of Atlanta were canceled as of early Saturday afternoon, according to FlightAware. Hundreds more were delayed. Delta – which uses the Atlanta airport as its hub – is suffering the worst from cancellations, with 14% of the airline's total flights canceled, according to FlightAware. 'Severe weather overnight is causing delays and cancellations,' the airport said Saturday in a post on X, Powerful winds in Atlanta prompted the evacuation of most air traffic controllers from the control tower Friday evening, according to CNN affiliate WANF, citing the Federal Aviation Administration. A small crew stayed to handle inbound planes, reported WANF. Additionally, severe thunderstorms overnight brought quarter-inch hail to the city. More than 100 Delta aircraft require inspection before they're allowed to fly as a result, a Delta employee familiar with the situation told CNN as of late Friday evening. Delta's maintenance team was working 'quickly through the backlog,' the Delta employee said. There was also a ground stop in place Friday evening due to the severe weather, which limits inbound aircraft from taking off. The mounting delays come as millions of people prepare to travel for the Fourth of July. The AAA estimates that 72.2 million people will travel at least 50 miles or more from home during the holiday period, starting from Saturday, June 28, until Sunday, July 6, with 5.84 million travelers expected to fly to their destinations. The Atlanta airport expects to see 394,576 passengers over the holiday period, according to WANF. The Hartsfield-Jackson airport served over 100 million passengers in 2024, making it busier than London's Heathrow or the Dubai International Airport. CNN has reached out to the airport, Delta, and the FAA for more information. This is a developing story and will be updated.
