Lalu's 'Owaisi' dilemma: Will RJD align with AIMIM for Bihar polls? Seemanchal holds the key

NEW DELHI: Ahead of the big Bihar battle, which is just a few months away, opposition parties are burning the midnight oil to piece together a winning arithmetic against the BJP-led ruling NDA.
But one variable that continues to throw off their number game, as always, is Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM.
AIMIM's Bihar chief Akhtarul Iman, who is also the party's lone MLA in the state, wrote a letter to RJD supremo
Lalu Prasad Yadav
, pitching to contest polls unitedly against the NDA.

Will Lalu Yadav accommodate the AIMIM in the Mahagathbandhan? Well, the answer is intricately layered. While AIMIM may be anti-BJP, many in the opposition bloc see Owaisi's party as complicating their fight.
Traditionally, Yadavs and Muslims have formed the core voter base of Lalu Yadav's Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), while AIMIM draws most of its support from Muslim voters. A tie-up with AIMIM would mean the RJD conceding part of that space to Owaisi, a move that may not be politically prudent for either Lalu or Tejashwi Yadav.
If the RJD chooses to shrug off AIMIM's alliance offer, the move may not come without consequences.

In the 2020 Bihar assembly polls, Owaisi's party made a surprise mark, winning five seats in the Muslim-dominated Seemanchal region, which the Mahagathbandhan was hopeful of winning.
In doing so, AIMIM dented the prospects of the RJD and Congress by cutting into their Muslim vote base, which makes up roughly 17 per cent of the electorate.
A closer look at the results shows that AIMIM won seats that might otherwise have gone to the grand alliance.
There were few, if any, constituencies where AIMIM's presence helped the NDA directly by splitting votes.
Here's how the number game unravelled in the five seats that AIMIM won in 2020.
In the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections, AIMIM fielded 18 candidates across the state, with 14 of them contesting in the Muslim-dominated Seemanchal region. Out of these 14, the party won five seats.
These included Amour and Baisi in Purnea district, where Akhtarul Iman and Syed Ruknuddin Ahmad secured victories, respectively.
In Kishanganj, AIMIM won Kochadhaman and Bahadurganj, represented by Muhammad Izhar Asfi and Mohammad Anzar Nayeemi. The fifth win came from Jokihat in the Araria district, where Shahnawaz Alam emerged victorious. The results marked AIMIM's emergence as a serious player in Bihar's Muslim belt.
Lalu Yadav's aversion to teaming up with AIMIM was evident when, just two years after their 2020 victory, four of AIMIM's five MLAs switched sides and joined the RJD.
MLAs Shahnawaz Alam, Mohammad Anzar Nayeemi, Muhammad Izhar Asfi and Syed Ruknuddin Ahmad with Tejashwi Yadav after ditching the AIMIM in 2022.
Despite being the political nemesis of the BJP, both the RJD and AIMIM trade charges at each other, with Lalu's party accusing Owaisi's party of being the "B-team" of the BJP.
"The Bihar election will decide the political direction of the country. AIMIM wants to join the Mahagathbandha, but their track record suggests that they have worked as the BJP's B-team to benefit the ruling party," RJD spokesperson Mritunjay Tiwari told TOI.
On the possibility of an alliance with AIMIM, he said: 'The final decision has to be taken by Lalu Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav, and the leaders of the Mahagathbandhan,' adding that there would be no split in votes this time, given the 'Tejashwi tsunami in the state.'
A similar bittersweet sentiment was echoed by the AIMIM. While the party strongly denounced the "B-team" tag attached to it by the RJD, it appeared more determined to defeat the BJP.
"It's their old habit to label us as the B team, C team, D team... but they have no evidence or data. They blame us for covering up their own flaws. We didn't contest in Haryana - so why did they (Congress) lose there? We didn't fight in most states, yet they still lost,' AIMIM spokesperson Waris Pathan told TOI.
"Our objective in fighting elections is to defeat the BJP and prevent the division of secular votes. Even the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is contesting, but no one questions which team they belong to," he added.
What if Lalu declines AIMIM's offer?
In the event that the RJD declines to join hands with AIMIM, Waris Pathan said: 'Even if they don't respond, we will contest the election. Nobody can stop us.'
With a renewed alliance pitch and a push for broader caste and regional representation, AIMIM is eyeing a larger, more inclusive role in Bihar's political landscape.
The party has already announced Rana Ranjit, a Rajput from East Champaran, as its candidate from the Dhaka assembly constituency, a move aimed at expanding its appeal beyond its traditional Muslim voter base.
More non-Muslim candidates are expected to follow, as AIMIM works to shed its image as a niche outfit. The party has also intensified its outreach across Bihar, focusing on core issues like flooding, high infant mortality, corruption, migration, unemployment, and human trafficking, particularly in neglected regions like Seemanchal.
'It's Up To Them' Owaisi Ready To Join Mahagathbandhan In Bihar Elections, Says NDA Must Go
As Bihar's political chessboard resets for yet another showdown, AIMIM's knock at the Grand Alliance's door may continue to hold a whiff of suspicion for the bloc. However, whether Lalu Yadav lets Owaisi in or keeps him out, the party's presence is expected to stir the pot, especially in Seemanchal.
For now, AIMIM is playing both outsider and aspirant, pitching unity, denying labels, and preparing for a solo flight if need be. In Bihar's ruthless electoral math, even a small miscalculation can swing the result.

Detained in Delhi days ago, ‘Bengal family' of three pushed into Bangladesh

IN A fresh incident, a family of three, including their minor son, was detained in Delhi as 'illegal Bangladeshis' and then finally 'pushed into the neighbouring country,' their relatives said. The relatives claimed that the family hails from Birbhum in West Bengal. A senior police officer in Delhi said that Danish Sheikh, his wife Sunali Khatun and their minor son have 'all been deported to Bangladesh after proper verification'. This comes close on the heels of such detentions in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Delhi and Madhya Pradesh. Recently, a total of seven persons, hailing from West Bengal, were detained by the Mumbai police and pushed into Bangladesh by BSF at 3:30 am on June 14. Apart from four youths in Murshidabad, one from Purba Bardhaman, a husband–wife duo from North 24 Parganas district was brought back from Bangladesh after Bengal government's intervention. After intervention by the TMC government in Bengal, the individuals were brought back and sent to their homes. 'They all have been deported to Bangladesh on June 26 after proper verification at the local police level first and after that a thorough interrogation by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office office. They hail from Bagerhat, Bangladesh,' said Rajeev Ranjan, DCP (Rohini). 'This cannot be tolerated. This is happening every day. Despite showing all proof, including land records, this has happened,' claimed Samirul Islam, chairman of the migrant labour welfare board and Rajya Sabha MP. 'Our government has intervened, but the administration in BJP-ruled states and in Delhi are not paying heed. We will move to court on Monday and appeal to the court to produce them before the judge. Is it a fault to speak in Bengali outside Bengal?' claimed Islam. According to the family members, Sheikh, his wife Sunali and their minor son were picked up by the police and taken to a police station in Delhi. The family members claimed they (Sheikh and his wife) belong to Paikar village under Muraroi police station limits in Birbhum district. 'They are migrant labourers who have been working as ragpickers in Delhi for the last 20 years. They were picked up by the police on July 18. All documents, including land deeds, were provided to the police. But they didn't budge,' said Roshni Bibi, a cousin of Sunali, speaking to The Indian Express over phone from Delhi. 'Their second child, a girl, was not detained as she was with a relative in another place. We did not know what happened to the family until they called us from Bangladesh. They said someone has given them shelter there but could not specify the location,' said Roshni Bibi. 'They worked for several years in Delhi as ragpickers. Like most migrant workers, they visit their native village during festivities. They visited here and left for Delhi just one-and-a-half months ago,' said Rocky Sheikh, a cousin of Sunali and a resident of Birbhum. Oppn intensifies protests seeking Veena's resignation

T'puram/Kottayam The Congress-led opposition intensified the protests against health minister Veena George following the death of a woman in the building collapse at Kottayam Medical College Hospital. Youth Congress, KSU, Mahila Congress and Youth League organized protests across the state, including Palakkad, Kochi, Kollam, Kannur and Mananthavady, seeking the resignation of the health minister. In the state capital, Youth Congress organized a protest march to the official residence of the health minister, Thycaud House. The march resulted in a face off between the protesters and police for hours as the YC workers refused to disperse even after repeated use of water cannons by police. The YC activists tried to climb the walls of the health minister's residence. However, police, who were present in large numbers, managed to prevent them from entering the building. Police used water cannons several times against their attempt to breach the barricades. Police later arrested and removed the protesters from the scene. The face-off lasted for hours on the busy Thycaud-Vazhuthacaud road. Clashes also occurred during a Congress march to the Sasthamkotta taluk hospital in Kollam, demanding the health minister's resignation, injuring the block president and others. In Palakkad, senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala, while launching a protest by the Mahila Congress, said that chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan ought to have sought the health minister's resignation before going abroad in view of her alleged "inefficiency", "indifference" and "grave mistakes". In Pathanamthitta, Youth Congress and BJP continued their protests. Protest marches were taken out to the residence of the minister at Kumbazha and Angadickal as well as the DMO office and General Hospital. YC workers protested over the dilapidated condition of the E Block at the General Hospital. They staged a symbolic protest by placing pillars to support the walls.

BJP slams Uddhav Thackeray over remarks on Patel community in Gujarat

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Gujarat on Saturday (July 5, 2025) hit back at Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray for his claims that the saffron party 'instigated' the Patel community and isolated it from others to secure electoral victories in the state. Gujarat BJP spokesperson Dr. Rutvij Patel dismissed Mr. Thackeray's comments, stating that the Sena leader was unaware of Gujarat's political dynamics. 'Uddhav Thackeray does not know anything about Gujarat. Here, the BJP and the Patidar community (Patels) are two sides of the same coin. The BJP has given Gujarat three Patidar chief ministers and several state unit presidents,' Mr. Patel said. He further pointed out that current Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and multiple ministers in the state government belong to the Patidar community. 'Mr. Thackeray should have done his homework before making such baseless remarks,' he added. Another BJP spokesperson, Hitendra Patel, accused Mr. Thackeray of adopting the 'language of Congress' and attempting to create divisions. 'The Patidar community played a crucial role in the BJP's rise in Gujarat, and the party has equally contributed to the community's progress. Four state BJP presidents and three chief ministers—Keshubhai Patel, Anandiben Patel, and Bhupendra Patel—were from the Patidar community,' he said. 'It does not befit Mr. Thackeray to speak like Congress, which thrives on dividing people along caste and religious lines,' Mr. Hitendra Patel added. Mr. Thackeray's remarks came during a rally in Mumbai celebrating the Maharashtra government's decision to withdraw two orders introducing Hindi in state schools from Class 1. He alleged that the BJP 'instigated' the Patels in Gujarat ahead of the 2017 assembly polls to polarize voters. 'What did they do in Gujarat? The atmosphere was such that Patels would defeat the BJP. But they provoked the Patel community, isolated them, and mobilized everyone else to win,' Mr. Thackeray claimed. He further accused the BJP of employing similar tactics in Haryana and Maharashtra, alleging that the party incited Jats and Marathas, respectively, to consolidate other communities in its favor.
