
Objections to expansion of council's Caldicot Pil Row depot
Residents say the area is used by children for playing, is an important area of open space close to the Newport to Gloucester railway line and fear increased noise and smells from the depot expanding towards their homes.
Caldicot Town Council has also objected to the proposal while Monmouthshire County Council's own landscape officer Andrew Nevill has issued a holding objection as he said too little information has been provided about the loss of an amenity area and public open space 'on the doorstep and serving nearby residential areas'.
Impacts on the environment, biodiversity and bats have also been questioned by Mr Nevill.
There have already been 20 objections received by council planners from members of the public, many stating they are local residents.
One letter said the area is important to people living along Orchid Drive, Railway View and Estuary View the residential streets closest to the recreation ground where there is also a children's play area with basketball hoop and football goalposts outside of the land earmarked for the compound.
The letter stated: 'The proposed development is to be built on the only local green space in the area, which has been used for recreation by local residents for many years since the houses were built. The field and the adjacent play park is always in use with the local children and walkers, and is much valued by the local residence as a tranquil safe space.'
Another objection stated: 'Your proposal would result in the loss of a beloved field, which serves as a crucial recreational area for the entire estate. It is a place where children play, dogs exercise, and elderly residents, who may not be able to walk long distances, can enjoy the outdoors and breathe fresh air.'
Objectors have also suggested the expansion could be accommodated within the council's existing site or the wider industrial estate or lorries should be kept at its Five Lanes depot near Caerwent.
Plans submitted on the council's behalf show trees and hedgreows would be planted along the border of the compound and an existing large Sycamore tree retained.
The application states: 'Overall, it is considered that the proposed development would be in accordance with Wales' and Monmouthshire County Council's Green Infrastructure Strategy.'
The application is being assessed by the council's planning department.

Queries related to planting along Church Road have been raised with Monmouthshire County Council. On a related note, the council reported concerns about rising water levels and sediment issues occurring at the Neddern River and Severn Estuary. Further updates on these issues are expected to follow in the coming months. Gwent Police reported a recent incident involving two youths in the Community Garden, which was captured on CCTV. The incident has raised concerns about local security.

£70m net-zero carbon school officially opens in Abergavenny
King Henry VIII 3-19 School in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, is the first operationally net-zero carbon all-through school in Wales. Funded by Monmouthshire County Council and the Welsh Government through the Sustainable Communities for Learning programme, the project marks a major investment in sustainable education. Cllr Laura Wright, Monmouthshire County Council's cabinet member for education, said: "This building is more than bricks and mortar. "It's a beacon for a modern education system in Wales, designed to inspire, to nurture, and to empower our young people." An official opening took place on July 10 and was attended by Welsh Government cabinet secretary for education Lynne Neagle. Ms Neagle said: "As our first operationally net-zero carbon all-through school, not only will our learners benefit from high-quality facilities, but they will also benefit from learning in a sustainable school environment. "What has been achieved here is truly inspiring for our learners." The school's through-school strategy was showcased with performances from pupils of all ages. Monmouthshire County Council was also named Client of the Year at the Constructing Excellence in Wales Awards for its leadership on the project. The council will now represent Wales at the UK National Awards later this year.

Armed Forces Day at Caldicot Castle and Country Park
More than 7,000 people gathered at Caldicot Castle and Country Park on Saturday, June 28, for Wales' National Armed Forces Day in honour of servicemen and women, past and present. Councillor Peter Strong, chair and armed forces champion at Monmouthshire County Council, said: "What a wonderful day at Caldicot Castle and Country Park. "Seeing so many people in attendance to show their support for our Armed Forces community highlights the high esteem that people have for serving personnel, veterans, reservists, cadets, and their families." The event featured a Spitfire flypast, a cadet and veterans parade, and a full programme of musical performances. It was also where the Armed Forces Covenant was re-signed by the council. Councillor Mary Ann Brocklesby, leader of Monmouthshire County Council, said: "It was a privilege to re-sign the Covenant at the Armed Forces Day event."
