Rivalling Musk's Optimus Robot, China Unveils Rs 5 Lakh Bot That Can Fist-Fight

NDTV6 days ago
A humanoid robot that can fist-fight and even do cartwheels has been unveiled by a Chinese company that costs a little over Rs 5 lakh ($6,000), rivalling other companies producing similar bots. The new R1 robot by Unitree Robotics, unveiled on Friday, could be seen performing handstands and throwing combination punches.
The R1 weighs about 55 pounds and has 26 joints to allow for flexible movement. It is also equipped with multimodal artificial intelligence, including voice and image recognition. The robot's capabilities, as shown in the viral video, mark a significant leap forward in robotic locomotion and balance.
Apart from displaying ample boxing capabilities, the robot also performed "kip-up' -- a complex gymnastic manoeuvre involving a person or robot transitioning from a supine position to standing without using their hands.

As of the last update, the video had garnered nearly three million views and hundreds of comments, with the majority asking if the robot could perform everyday chores.
"Will it fight anyone you point at? Asking for a friend," said one user while another added: "Can it walk my dog and serve breakfast to my kids?"
Meanwhile, other users tagged Elon Musk and his Tesla Optimus company, which also develops general-purpose, bipedal humanoids, capable of performing tasks that are unsafe, repetitive or boring.
"Yo @Tesla@Tesla_Optimus@elonmusk. You guys still trying compete? Hope you're not still in the lab in few years while these guys are ramping and deploying next year?" the user said.
Apart from Mr Musk's company, US firm Boston Dynamics and its Atlas robots have also helped pioneer the humanoid robot market. However, an advanced human-like bot for just Rs 5 lakh, if done successfully, could mark a major milestone for China in the robotics and AI race.
Currently, Unitree's larger, more advanced humanoid robot H1 sells for more than Rs 77 lakh ($90,000). Unitree's older G1 humanoid, which has costs Rs 13.8 lakh ($16,000), grew popular for use in research labs and schools.

Grok Imagine goes live on Elon Musk's X platform

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI has officially rolled out Grok Imagine, a text-to-video generation tool integrated within the X platform (formerly Twitter). The feature, which was previously being tested with a limited group of users, is now more widely accessible. According to Musk, users can update their X app and request access to the waitlist by navigating to the 'Grok' section in settings and selecting 'Imagine.' 'Grok Imagine is still in early beta, so will improve almost every day,' Musk wrote in a post on X, adding that real-time improvements are expected as the model scales. Grok Imagine allows users to generate videos and still images from text prompts, with videos of up to six minutes in duration. In addition, it can animate static images into moving visuals with synchronized sound, offering creators a more seamless workflow without needing external tools or software. Early users have compared the feature to Twitter's Vine, the once-popular short-form video app that was discontinued in 2017. However, Grok Imagine appears to be aimed at much broader use cases—including entertainment, education, and meme culture—leveraging generative AI for creative expression. The feature is available both via the standalone Grok app and within the main X platform. According to a post by the official Grok handle, full public rollout is expected in phases beginning October 2025. The launch follows xAI's recent disclosure that it is also working on a kid-friendly version of its Grok chatbot, suggesting the company is eyeing wider demographic adoption as it refines its AI capabilities. Meanwhile, xAI is in the process of preparing a fresh funding round, which could value the company between $170 billion and $200 billion, according to a July 12 Reuters report. The company expects to generate over $13 billion in annual earnings by 2029, as per financial projections shared by Morgan Stanley and reported by Bloomberg in June. With Grok Imagine now live, Musk appears to be positioning X as not just a social media platform but an AI-powered content engine, blending user-generated media with proprietary infrastructure and models built by xAI.

Dhadak 2 Box Office Day 1: Siddhant-Triptii Starrer Opens To Modest Start, Earns Rs 3.65 Cr

Mumbai: The much-awaited romantic drama 'Dhadak 2,' starring Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri, finally hit theatres this Friday. While the film had generated curiosity for its fresh pairing, its box office performance on Day 1 fell short of expectations. According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, the sequel to 'Dhadak' earned Rs 3.65 crore on its first day in India. The film's release clashed with Ajay Devgn's starer 'Son of Sardaar 2.' With two major films hitting theatres on the same day, movie buffs seem to have divided their attention, which could be one reason why the film fell short of expectations. Adding to the pressure was the continued success of Ahaan Panday's Saiyaara at the box office. The romantic drama, which hit theatres earlier on July 18, is still performing strongly. This seems to have affected the Siddhant and Dimri starrer. 'Dhadak 2' is a follow-up to 2018's 'Dhadak' and a remake of filmmaker Mari Selvaraj's 2018 Tamil film Pariyerum Perumal. As per Adarsh, the sequel's first-day numbers are below expectations, especially when compared to its first instalment, 'Dhadak,' which starred Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter. The film had earned Rs 8.71 crore on its opening day back then. All eyes are now on the weekend collections to see if the film can pick up pace. Helmed by Shazia Iqbal, Dhadak 2 explores love while challenging social norms. The film follows Siddhant's character as he navigates a love story that breaks through societal expectations and class barriers.
