Mother Mother refuse to 'pander to the TikTok era' after going viral
The Canadian rockers - who have exceeded nine billion streams globally - found themselves going viral on the video-sharing platform in 2020, after their 2008 song Hayloft was used in edits, cosplay, and creative transitions.
As a result, the group dropped Hayloft II, which also became a hit.
Frontman Ryan Guldemond subsequently noticed on Reddit that some people were critcising them for going after commercial success with their music - but he insists that couldn't be farther from the truth.
He told ContactMusic.com: "I was reading people saying, 'Oh, they pander to the TikTok era with their new writing.'

And it's like, Huh? I don't think that's true. If anything, it's the opposite, like, yeah, you know, the TikTok thing came along and made a bunch of songs that were really unviable, commercially famous, and that was to us that sent a message like, Oh, just be yourself. Like, just write from the heart and follow your whims. And that's the best thing you can do, is to be just totally authentic. And if that means you're writing kind of weird, unconventional songs, then so be it."
The 'Finger' singer insists the whole TikTok viral experience taught them to "reject writing strategically for anything".
He continued: "And so I've sort of taken that message and really ran with it, because I agree. I think the best thing anybody can do, whether you're writing a song or just, I don't know, whatever in life, just to be who you are. So I'm grateful for the TikTok thing, for sending that message, and if anything, yeah, like I said, it has made us reject writing strategically for anything."
Mother Mother returned on June 6 with their new album 'Nostalgia', comprised of songs old and new to mark their 20th anniversary.

Emergency plan 'worked great,' despite performer's encounter with lightning: Folk on the Rocks
Folk on the Rocks says its emergency response plan "worked great" after a thunderstorm forced the Yellowknife music festival to shut down early last Friday – and it has followed up with a local performer who had a scary experience with lightning. "Lightning hit the tent and I got shocked pretty good," Benji Staker, who perfomes as Hughes, told CBC News on Saturday. The annual three-day outdoor festival kicked off Friday with its Warm the Rocks event in the beer gardens at the Folk on the Rocks site. However, after the thunderstorm started, organizers made the decision to evacuate the site at around 8:30 p.m. Straker said he and his wife and two others had sought refuge from the storm under a tent with sound equipment when it happened. He'd been leaning against a metal equipment box at the time, and said it felt like someone punched him in the head and kicked him in the butt. "I felt fine right away," he said. "I think everybody else was kind of more concerned." Straker said many people pulled him aside at the festival to ask him what happened and if he was OK. "I'm having fun with it," he said. "They're wondering why I'm not stuttering and why I don't have, like, a white stripe on my head or, like, spider veins." "It's obviously nobody's fault. Maybe ours, for getting under a metal frame tent. But whatever, it is what it is." Teresa Horosko, the festival's executive director, said in an interview Thursday that the festival has spoken with Straker about what happened. "The static charge in the air when lightning is present is intense and it is possible to feel some shocks or some effects from that static charge," she said. "We've discussed that with him and also have opened up that conversation for anybody else who has been on site who may have felt some static charge." Asked whether the festival's emergency response plan worked, given what happened, Horosko said it's something she's been asking herself too. "Did we do enough, and quickly enough? And I think, ultimately, yes." Horosko said the festival had been monitoring the storm for a while and an evacuation didn't seem necessary at first. But then the wind changed, a low pressure system moved in, and things started to move quickly. "I think back on that moment a lot. If I had done things a little bit different … would we not have had those instances? And I can't guarantee that those wouldn't have happened. Like static charge in the air is a big thing when there is an electrical storm. And I think ultimately we made the right choice when we made that choice." Horosko said staff and volunteers did an "incredible job" clearing the site, and she's thankful to the audience for paying attention and being co-operative. Though she's satisfied with how the emergency response plan worked, she does hope to make some updates to it. "It was our first time doing an evacuation because of a thunderstorm. So going to edit that a little bit and also have a more detailed re-opening plan." The festival has described shutting down early on Friday as a "devastating financial loss." Horosko said the 19+ event brings in about a third of the festival's sales – through drinks at the beer garden and merchandise. Though attendance on Saturday was "big," the cool Sunday forecast meant fewer attendees. "We aren't out of the woods yet," said Horosko. She said the festival is planning some fundraising activities in the future.

David even made a surprise appearance to celebrate the big reveal, sending fans into an absolute frenzy. The new series comes from Rick and Morty executive producers Dan Harmon and James Siciliano, the same creative minds who've been steering the original show into absurd awesomeness for years. This time, they're zeroing in on President Andre Curtis, a character who's been a scene-stealer since his debut. Joining David in the voice cast are Stephanie Beatriz ( Brooklyn Nine-Nine ) and Jim Rash ( Community ). Rash and David's reunion keeps this firmly within the 'Harmon Creative Universe,' considering both worked with him on Community . David has voiced President Curtis across multiple Rick and Morty seasons, but now the character is getting his own platform to shine. In a statement, David shared just how pumped he is for this: 'President Curtis has always been a blast to play. Getting to explore his world more deeply in this new series is a dream. Sounds like a mix of political satire, sci-fi insanity, and the kind of weirdness and comedy Rick and Morty fans enjoy. Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen had nothing but praise for the new show and its star character: 'This is a series we would have greenlit even if it didn't have anything at all to do with 'Rick and Morty.' President Andre Curtis is just that good of a character. The rest of the world the team has fleshed out is super fun and totally stands on its own. We can't wait for you to see it.' That says a lot about the strength of this concept, and the fact that Adult Swim believes this show can thrive even without Rick and Morty constantly barging in. David has been absolutely crushing it in voice work lately. Aside from reprising Curtis, he's been popping up all over the animation scene: Hulu's King of the Hill revival, Harbin Hotel , Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai , Family Guy , Hit-Monkey , Masters of the Universe: Revolution , and more. This isn't the first time Adult Swim has spun off a piece of the Rick and Morty multiverse. Fans have already seen projects like Vindicators 2: Last Stand Between Earth and Doom and Rick and Morty: The Anime , plus a stack of shorts and games. But President Curtis feels like the most fun spinoff yet, building a whole new world around a character fans already love.

Vogue's AI Guess Models Explained: Interview
Earlier this week, TikTok user @lala4an posted a video with an observation about the August issue of Vogue. Inside, there was an ad for Guess's chevron dress, modeled by an otherwise unassuming (but, of course, gorgeous) blonde woman with a slim, hourglass figure. However, a look at the small print revealed something surprising: "Produced by Seraphinne Vallora on AI." The revelation that AI models were inside the pages of Vogue quickly went viral, with the video amassing over 2 million views in three days. As the TikTok found its way across other platforms, much of the response was, in a word, negative. So, who is Seraphinne Vallora? Go on their Instagram, which has over 220k followers, and you'll see hundreds of smooth-skinned women with high cheekbones and plump lips (the caveat being that all of these images are AI-generated). In their own words, courtesy of their bio, "We design editorial level AI-driven marketing campaigns and cinematic videos. As seen in Elle, Grazia, Vogue, WSJ, FT, Harper's Bazaar." The real women behind the business, Valentina Gonzalez and Andreea Petrescu, told me that they started making AI models because they were trying to create a jewelry brand and couldn't afford the real thing. And "With us designers and architects, we decided to use our skills to try to create our own models. We started to put our own jewelry that we were trying to sell into these AI models and campaigns. Essentially, other people saw this, it was a success, and they asked if we could do the same for them." As they saw it, there was a "huge gap in the market" for a "design-led" AI image company. Andreea recalled, "We started going viral, because nobody was doing this at the time, and that's how we grew our account. We grew the account organically." The company has since been going for two years, comprising now of five people. Their page caught the attention of Paul Marciano, the co-founder of Guess, who sent them a DM. As Andreea put it, "Paul is a very fearless man. He's a trendsetter. So he decided, 'I like this, I want it.' Eventually, I really believe many other companies will go for this." Valentina says they're the "first AI-driven campaign to be published worldwide," in 20 storefronts across Europe and an additional 30 magazines. I asked them why a brand like Guess, which has a presumably ample budget, would opt for AI. "When Paul hired us, he told us very clearly, 'I'm not looking to replace our models.' He wants to supplement, because they have so many product campaigns that can take a very, very long time to plan, so he can only do a few campaigns every year," she recalled. "Meanwhile, with AI, it could be faster. You don't need to arrange any traveling, you don't need permits. You don't need any of these to create beautiful images." They both insist that their use of AI is a form of art, as Valentina said, "It's no different to a random person taking a camera, that doesn't make them a photographer." Neither are they fans of the idea that the models, based on text inputs and "proprietary techniques," are easy to make. They deny that images of real people are used to make composites: "It's really not copying anyone's features. It's pretty much like imagination." Generally speaking, they'll provide mood boards to clients, sometimes working with photographers and in-person models to test poses and angles. Stylists will select the clothing and accessories. They showed me an example deck for a luxury brand, which said, "Together, we'll collaborate to bring your model to life. We begin by selecting the ideal body type, eye color, hair style, height, and other defining features that best represent your brand's identity." This is an example of what they'd send to a client — Saint Laurent does not appear to be a current client of theirs. "We invested so much in our technology, because we wanted it to look like a photo. What you see in Guess is amazing, but what we do now is even better," Andreea continued. This presents a potential issue: What if people don't know that the woman they're looking at is AI? She replied, "I do feel like if they don't realize it's digitally made, I don't feel like there's blame to be placed on us, because we do disclose it, the brands we work to do disclose it." Andreea notes that the Guess ads do have disclosures, but she doesn't think there will necessarily be a requirement to do so in the future. As she put it, "People are not familiar with it and people are scared of change. But once this becomes the new norm, I think whether companies decide to add it or not, it's not too relevant. The impact of it, whether you do it in AI or in a normal medium, will be the same if you get the same results." Do they worry that the use of AI models will further an already unrealistic beauty standard? "We are not creating a new standard. The standard has always been there," Valentina responded. Andreea affirmed, "We're pretty much in line with the same standard that is set in the rest of the magazine. If I look at a magazine, I'm gonna be bombarded with 10 different supermodels. Because one is AI, it doesn't change anything." Initially, the women say that they featured more diverse body types and ethnicities on their Instagram pages — even men. But it was the "fantasy type" of woman that got them the most attention. Valentina said, "It's not even us, it's the public. If they loved the diversity, we would have flooded our Instagram with diversity." They can't tell me who they're currently speaking with, citing NDAs. However, there is another service that Seraphinne Vallora offers: AI twins of real-life models. As Valentina described, "For example, if you're a supermodel or a model, you might want to have a twin of you so you can take two jobs at the same time. If you're in China and Miami, either way, you can get an AI avatar that is identical to you. We literally get everything exactly the way you look. I'm talking details, pores, facial hair, everything, we get it to exact accuracy." This is a real image of Bella Hadid. If supermodels do wind up using their AI avatars, will they have to disclose it? Valentina replied, "It's their choice. We encourage them to."
