Max Verstappen Reportedly Makes Decision On 2026 F1 Season
Speculation of Max Verstappen leaving Red Bull will go back on hold for another year.
Chatter has persisted about the four-time Formula One champion leaving Red Bull amid interest from Mercedes. Although Verstappen is under contract through 2028, ESPN's Nate Saunders reported Monday that he could have left after the 2025 season if he placed fourth or lower in the season standings after this Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix. The 27-year-old is third ahead of Mercedes driver George Russell.
Verstappen can't fall to fourth this weekend, so he's seemingly staying put in 2026. Red Bull adviser Helmut Marko confirmed as much in an interview with Sport.De, telling the German outlet that Verstappen will return to the team next season.
Talk of Verstappen leaving has persisted since last summer, as Mercedes principal and CEO Toto Wolff has made no secret of his interest in poaching F1's top star.
"I don't think that's how Formula One works – where then suddenly you can say, 'Well, bye guys.' It's not how it works," Verstappen told reporters last July when asked about his 2025 plans. "I have a long contract with the team. I'm very happy where I'm at."
Last month, Russell indicated that Mercedes has stalled his extension talks because of the team's pursuit of Verstappen. The 27-year-old's contract ends after this season, and Russell is now unable to surpass Verstappen for third place and give Mercedes a chance to replace him.
Former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner told Sky Sports weeks ago that he thinks Verstappen is tired of all the rumors of an exit. However, the team has since replaced him with Laurent Mekies.
"It's a lot of noise," Horner said. "I think Max gets quite annoyed by it. We're very clear with the contract that we have with Max until 2028. Anything is entirely speculative that is being said. We tend not to pay too much attention to it."
Meanwhile, Verstappen's chances of securing a fifth straight F1 title are dwindling. He trails McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris by 81 and 65 points in the standings, respectively, past the season's midway mark.Max Verstappen Reportedly Makes Decision On 2026 F1 Season first appeared on The Spun on Jul 29, 2025

Remco Evenepoel signs for Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe from 2026
Remco Evenepoel will join Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe from next season after compensation was agreed with Soudal-Quickstep to release the Belgian from his contract. The double Olympic gold medallist had been widely expected to leave after refusing to commit his future to the team during last month's Tour de France. Advertisement Evenepoel quit the Tour whilst sitting third after losing significant time early on stage 14, later revealing that he was riding the race with a broken rib. He is widely seen as one of the only riders in the peloton with the potential to challenge Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) and Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma Lease-A-Bike), and is currently considered the best flat time triallist in the world. 'Remco stands for ambition,' said CEO of Red Bull–Bora–Hansgrohe Ralph Denk. 'He doesn't just want to ride – he wants to shape cycling. He brings not only exceptional athletic talent, but also a remarkable mindset. His determination, professionalism, and relentless drive to succeed are truly inspiring.' INEOS Grenadiers also held a strong interest in recruiting the 25-year-old, with the British team currently lacking a major general classification contender. Evenepoel's arrival will lead to an interesting dynamic at Red Bull next season. Whilst Evenepoel has been recruited as the de facto leader, 24-year-old Florian Lipowitz outperformed him en route to finishing third in the Tour, while five-time Grand Tour winner Primoz Roglic is also still under contract. With three GC contenders, at least one will see their opportunities limited. Red Bull's chief of sports Rolf Aldag also left the team after the Tour, representing a significant shift in direction from the German squad. Soudal-Quickstep, meanwhile, are left with Mikel Landa as their GC contender, who is unlikely to seriously challenge for overall victories at Grand Tours, though they still retain one of the world's best sprinters in Tim Merlier. 'Representatives of Remco informed the team's management that he did not wish to discuss an extension of his current agreement, which expires at the end of 2026,' a Soudal-Quickstep statement said on Tuesday afternoon. 'After taking some time to consult with our sponsors and partners, the team's ownership and management have decided that it is in the best interest of everyone to agree that Remco can move at the end of the current 2025 season.'

Max Verstappen Says FWD Is 'The Worst Thing Ever,' 'Like Anti-Driving'
The latest car news, reviews, and features. Ford Performance published an absolute banger of a video the other day. It's almost 40 minutes of Chris Harris (one of the best car-video hosts working) buzzing around with Max Verstappen (one of the best drivers racing) in some legendary vehicles, nerding out about setups and driving styles. As an aside, Harris asks the Dutch F1 champ how he feels about front-wheel drive, and Verstappen offered a comically candid response. While cruising around the countryside in an RS200, Harris brought up Verstappen's spectacular save at the 2016 Brazilian Grand Prix, where the Dutchman heroically managed to pull his race car out of a spin in wet conditions. If you haven't seen that, it's an unbelievable illustration of calm under pressure: 'Honestly, that one was like 50/50, 50 luck and 50 skills,' Verstappen recalled, then went on to explain his maneuver. '…as soon as I felt it [traction] was coming back, I knew that just before the barrier, if you release the brakes, then you get the rolling speed of the tire, and you have a bit more—' 'It almost drags you forwards, like front-wheel drive,' Harris said, completing the thought. Then, seeing an opportunity for a fun question, Harris quickly asked: 'Do you like front-wheel drive?' Verstappen wasted no seconds answering: 'No.' 'No, I think it's really boring,' he elaborated, which is kind of funny since it wasn't that long ago when he was showing off the Honda Civic Type R. Harris egged him on a little, saying: 'We call it wrong-wheel drive.' Verstappen went on to say, 'For me, it's just like, anti-driving, you know? … I drove it sometimes on the simulator as well. For me, it's like the worst thing ever.' Harris snuck in a little more context for us viewers to close the loop: 'Also, what you're asking of the tire, seems a huge burden. It has to steer, and, put the power down.' That led into an even more interesting discussion of racing style, with Verstappen saying FWD cars need to be driven 'V-style,' which, in simple terms, partially means you need your car to be as straight as possible when you exit a corner. This exchange takes place around the 14:30 mark of this Ford Performance video, but I strongly recommend you bookmark it and come back when you have time to watch the whole thing. The front-wheel-drive comment made a funny hook for this blog, but I will admit it's an undersell of what this whole video is: Two driving legends given free rein to nerd out on what they love about going fast and using cars. Don't get too discouraged by the Flying Dutchman's comments if you're a front-drive fan. Most of us could probably do 1,000 laps around the Nürburgring in a Civic Type R and never get close to the level Verstappen's pushing—just because something doesn't work for his driving style doesn't make it 'wrong.' But if you can get Chris Harris to make this face in the passenger seat, you get to say whatever you want about cars. Ford Performance Got a tip? Drop us a line at tips@
