Discovery Insure, bp launch #DriveNowTextLater road safety campaign

News2405-05-2025
• Discovery Insure's telematics data shows that just 20 seconds on a phone increases accident risk by over 60% and that cellphone-linked distraction is the biggest contributor to road accidents in the country.
• Discovery Insure and bp launch the #DriveNowTextLater campaign – a national movement to stop drivers from texting while driving.
• Drivers are encouraged to pledge not to text and drive by applying a thumb sticker as a visible reminder of their commitment to put phones away and keep eyes on the road, and hands engaged in safe driving.
• Pledgers can win a share of R1 million by participating and sharing their commitment on social media.
• Discovery Insure is committed to creating a nation of great drivers by investing in innovative, evidence-based safety initiatives.
Discovery Insure, in partnership with bp Southern Africa (bpSA), has launched a bold new nationwide campaign: #DriveNowTextLater.
This high-impact initiative tackles one of South Africa's deadliest driving behaviours – texting while driving – by calling on all motorists to make a visible and public pledge to put phones away and keep eyes on the road, and hands engaged in safe driving.
This nationwide campaign is designed to disrupt this dangerous norm and help make the country's roads safer for everyone.
The campaign asks all motorists to make a simple but powerful public pledge: don't text while driving. Drivers who fill up for R600 or more at participating bp service stations will receive a thumb sticker – a visible reminder on the finger most often used to send texts.
By placing the sticker on their thumb nail, scanning the QR code and taking a digital pledge, then posting their pledge to social media using the hashtag #DriveNowTextLater, motorists commit to keeping their phones down and their attention on the road. This simple gesture could save lives – and possibly win participants a cash prize. Those who share their pledge stand to win a share of R1 million, turning positive behaviour into tangible rewards.
bpSA GM for Mobility & Convenience Nokwanda Khumalo adds, 'At bp, safety is at the heart of everything we do – for our teams, our customers and the communities we serve. The #DriveNowTextLater campaign aligns with our safety leadership culture and allows us to extend that commitment to every person who drives into our forecourts. It's about creating safer journeys and supporting a culture where people can get to their loved ones safely every time.'
Just 20 seconds of phone use while driving increases your risk of an accident by more than 60%
'The dangers of texting while driving can't be overstated. It's time to make texting while driving socially unacceptable – just like drinking and driving has become,' says CEO of Discovery Insure, Robert Attwell. 'Discovery Insure's telematics data shows clearly that distracted driving – especially using a cellphone behind the wheel – is putting South African drivers at serious risk.'
The #DriveNowTextLater campaign is underpinned by Discovery Insure's Vitality Drive programme, which uses telematics and behavioural science to reward safe driving. With over 20 billion kilometres of driving data and more than 500,000 trips logged daily, Discovery Insure has unique insight into the behaviours behind road risk.
'In May last year we shared the results of research into factors that influence vehicle accident risk,' explains Attwell. 'The data showed that while environmental factors like road conditions, and vehicle factors contribute to road fatalities; human factors like driver behaviour play the biggest role. For Discovery Insure clients, over 60% of motor vehicle fatalities were influenced by five behaviours – drinking and driving, cellphone usage while driving, excessive speeding, aggressive driving, and lack of vehicle care. Notably, the data revealed that cellphone distractions were the biggest contributor to road accidents for our clients.'
Insure's findings include:
• Cellphone usage had overtaken speeding as the leading contributor to motor vehicle accidents in South Africa.
• Just 20 seconds on a cellphone during a trip increased one's risk of an accident by over 60%.
• Discovery Insure clients who submitted accident claims were 52% more likely to have used their phone than to have exceeded the speed limit on the day of the accident.
'We found a concerning rise in accidents due to distracted driving, overshadowing previous risk areas like night-time driving, reflecting a shift in risk patterns on the road. The research underscored the urgent need for behaviour change and for supporting interventions like telematics-based rewards, educational campaigns, and policy advocacy to address cellphone distractions while driving – which brings us to the launch of this exciting new campaign.'
'With all of this in mind, our new campaign is about sharing information and helping people to develop healthier driving habits,' says Attwell. 'It's about shifting culture. We want to make safe driving aspirational, visible and rewarding. When someone wears that sticker on their thumb, they're sending a message that their safety, and the safety of others, matters.'
A nationwide movement for safer roads
'We're proud to partner with Discovery Insure on a campaign that is more than just awareness – it's a movement that empowers everyday drivers to make safer choices,' adds Khumalo. 'If one small pledge can prevent one accident, then this campaign will have made a meaningful difference.'
'Through this partnership with bp, and with the voices of trusted public figures and real South Africans, we're aiming to drive a real culture shift,' adds Attwell. 'Together, we can turn one small pledge into one big movement.'
How South African drivers can take part:
• From the 9th of April to the 30th of June 2025, fill up at any participating bp service station, spending R600 or more to qualify.
• Get your thumb sticker and scan the QR code to take the pledge.
• Post your photo with the sticker to social media using #DriveNowTextLater.
• Stand to win your share of R1 million in prizes.
Discovery Insure's ongoing commitment to building a nation of great drivers
#DriveNowTextLater is the latest in a series of initiatives from Discovery Insure that aim to reduce road accidents through innovation and behavioural change. From Vitality Drive and Impact Alert to the Discovery Safe Journeys to School programme and Pothole Patrol, the business continues to invest in data-backed solutions that deliver real-world results.
'This campaign signals a bold evolution in our journey to building a nation of great drivers,' adds Attwell, 'one where small gesture, like placing a symbolic sticker on a thumb and pledging to change texting and driving behaviour one trip at a time, can spark a big movement towards safer roads for all.'

BP's Market Gains Outpace Its Industry: What it Means for Investors

Shares of BP plc BP have gained 13.8% in the past six months, outperforming the oil-energy sector's gain of 9.8%. The company has a market capitalization of $9.3 billion. BP also outpaced its energy peers, Exxon Mobil Corporation XOM, which has advanced 9%, and Chevron Corporation EQT, which has gained 5.8% over the same period. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research The Zacks Consensus Estimate for BP's 2025 revenues is pegged at $235 billion, suggesting a 20.6% year-over-year improvement. BP has an impressive Value Score of A. This style score helps analyze the growth prospects of a company. BP continues to be a prominent name in the energy sector, known for its strong record of consistent dividend payments. With a current dividend yield of 6.14%, BP stands tall among its rivals, outperforming ExxonMobil's 3.53% and Chevron's 4.61%. BP's current dividend yield is notably higher than that of the composite stocks belonging to the industry. The company remains committed to distributing 30-40% of its operating cash flow through dividends and buybacks. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Based on short-term price targets offered by 14 analysts, the Zacks average price target is $36.01 per share. The average suggests a 15.1% upside from the last closing price. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Is it worth paying for the integrated energy giant? Before reaching an investment conclusion, let us analyze BP's fundamentals and overall business environment. The most compelling reason to consider BP as a favorable investment is its strong free cash flow growth outlook. BP projects an adjusted free cash flow compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 20% from 2024 to 2027. This is anchored by its disciplined capital allocation and robust upstream operations. With a high sensitivity to oil prices, estimated at $340 million in pre-tax earnings for every $1 per barrel increase in Brent, BP stands to benefit significantly if the commodity cycle turns favorable. The projected cash flow expansion provides a crucial buffer against market volatility and supports long-term shareholder returns. Capital discipline has been a core pillar of BP's revised strategy. The company has reduced its 2025 capex guidance by $500 million to $14.5 billion. This move reflects both proactive cost management and sensitivity to current market volatility. At the same time, BP is pursuing a structural cost reduction target of $4-$5 billion by the end of 2027, which equates to about 20% of its 2023 baseline operating costs. Such efficiency gains will not only support earnings resilience but also create financial headroom for reinvestment or increased distributions to shareholders. BP is also executing effectively on its upstream growth projects, with tangible results in 2025. Three of the 10 major projects planned for the 2025-2027 period have already come online. These include the Cypre development in Trinidad, the Raven infills in Egypt and the GTA Phase 1 LNG project in Mauritania and Senegal. Collectively, these assets are expected to contribute more than 50,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) in 2025, with a peak output of 100,000 boe/d. The projects are capital-efficient, often tied to existing infrastructure, and are already delivering incremental cash flow. In parallel, BP's exploration efforts are yielding strong results, with six discoveries in first-quarter 2025. These include finds in the U.S. Gulf of America, Trinidad and Egypt, as well as a significant strike in Namibia through its Azule joint venture. Additionally, BP secured new access in Iraq and India, both of which have strategic production potential. The Ginger project in Trinidad, for instance, has been sanctioned and is expected to add 50,000 boe/d by 2027. This combination of near-term execution and long-term resource development enhances BP's upstream pipeline and value proposition. BP's portfolio composition reinforces its investment case. Around a quarter of its upstream production is based on production sharing agreements (PSAs), which are relatively insulated from short-term price swings. Moreover, its development costs remain competitive at approximately $10 per barrel, with unit production costs near $6 per barrel. This cost structure positions BP well to sustain operations profitably, even in a lower-price environment. The company's divestment strategy is progressing well, with more than $1.5 billion in proceeds secured year to date. The sale of non-core assets such as the Gelsenkirchen refinery and regional mobility businesses reflects a focus on portfolio high-grading. BP has revised its 2025 divestment proceeds guidance to $3-4 billion, with much of it expected in the second half. This initiative will help streamline operations and unlock capital for more investments. One of the primary risk factors is the significant volatility in macroeconomic conditions and commodity markets. The company explicitly states that recent global developments, such as the introduction of tariffs and related governmental responses, have contributed to heightened market instability. This has resulted in growing concerns about a weaker economic outlook, which can lead to reduced demand for oil and gas products. Such fluctuations in market demand directly affect commodity prices, and BP acknowledges that these softened prices have emerged in anticipation of this economic uncertainty. Elon Musk says he's formed the 'America Party' after a July 4 poll on X showed support

Elon Musk declared on X the formation of a new political party amid his ongoing feud with President Donald Trump over the "Big Beautiful Bill." "Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom," Musk wrote in an X post on Saturday afternoon. Musk's post came a day after he conducted a July 4 poll, asking X users if they want "independence" from the two-party system. About 65% of the 1.25 million participants voted "Yes." Musk, who was a staunch supporter of Trump's 2024 reelection bid, has been publicly critical of the president's "Big Beautiful Bill," a sweeping domestic policy bill that includes extensive tax cuts and could add more than $3 trillion to the national debt, according to the Congressional Budget Office. The Tesla CEO has characterized the bill on X as a form of "debt slavery." Just days after stepping away from his work at the White House DOGE Office, which was tasked with cutting spending and reducing the deficit, Musk in June called the legislation a "massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill." Musk then proposed the idea of forming a new political party that represents the "80% in the middle." Musk's repeated attacks on the bill led to a spectacular public fallout between him and the president. Trump even suggested that his office would look into possibly deporting Musk, a South African immigrant. Musk's July 4 poll on X came the same day Trump signed the bill into law. The CEO said on his social media platform that one way the new party could work is to focus on winning just a handful of Senate seats and House districts that could serve as the "deciding vote" on "contentious laws," given the "razor-thin legislative margins" in Congress. Musk and a White House spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment. Musk's back-and-forth regarding his involvement in political affairs has been followed by volatile times for the CEO of Tesla, his EV company. Wall Street analysts, including Tesla bull Dan Ives, have said that Musk's politics could lead the company astray if the chief executive doesn't snap back into focus. Earlier in June, Baird analysts downgraded the Tesla stock, noting that the Musk-Trump spat adds "uncertainty to TSLA's outlook.

Musk doubles down on third party threat with Independence Day poll

Tech billionaire Elon Musk on Friday leaned into his proposal for a third party amid his growing feud with President Trump over the 'big, beautiful' spending and tax bill with an Independence Day poll online. Hours before Trump signed the sprawling reconciliation package into law, Musk asked followers on social platform X whether he should move forward with creating the 'America Party.' He first floated the idea after his first public spat with the president early last month. 'Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system!' he wrote. 'Should we create the America Party?' The Tesla CEO, who also owns X, reupped the survey several times throughout the day and even gave a glimpse into his potential strategy. 'One way to execute on this would be to laser-focus on just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts,' he shared in a subsequent post. 'Given the razor-thin legislative margins, that would be enough to serve as the deciding vote on contentious laws, ensuring that they serve the true will of the people.' The poll, similar to one he set up for followers last month, is just the latest way Musk sought to get under Trump and GOP lawmakers' skin as the bill made its way to Trump's desk. The House passed the final bill on Thursday, after hours of tense negotiations with GOP holdouts. While the Senate worked to pass its own version of the megabill earlier this week, Musk threatened to back primary challengers of those who supported the legislation. In response, the president warned the billionaire that he could cut government contracts for his many companies and also left open the possibility of deporting the South African CEO. Musk left his senior Trump administration adviser position in late May, after his special government employee designation lapsed. He had originally been tapped to lead the president's Department of Government Efficiency — a commission created to root out waste and fraud within the federal government. While many questioned how long the relationship between the world's richest man and Trump would last, the rift only began after Musk criticized the reconciliation package as a 'disgusting abomination' and said it would be 'political suicide' for Republicans. The president said he was disappointed with the billionaire's analysis, which led to a tense back-and-forth between the men online. Tesla sales have plunged since the squabble. Musk admitted at one point that his comments 'went too far' and the ice seemed to be thawing, but the feud was reignited earlier this week over the bill — which includes an extension on Trump's 2017 tax breaks and sweeping cuts to Medicaid and energy tax credits. During a signing ceremony at the White House Friday, Trump said, 'We made promises, and it's really promises made, promises kept, and we've kept them.' 'This is a triumph of democracy on the birthday of democracy,' he continued. 'And I have to say, the people are happy.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
