Aimed at strengthening mathematical understanding and addressing foundational learning gaps, the initiative builds on its earlier success and growing impact since its launch in 2022.
Originally introduced to tackle poor performance in mathematics in board examinations, the programme initially targeted students of Classes VIII to X. It focused on making learning more engaging through activity-based worksheets, "Question of the Day" exercises, and structured assessments to foster concept-based and joyful learning.
In June 2024, these resources were made available to Classes VI to X, and from July 7, they will be shared digitally with all schools three times a week.
In a recent circular, Directorate of Education credited the initiative with contributing to improved performance in annual assessments and CBSE board exams. To build on this progress, schools have been directed to analyse the mid-term performance of Class X students to identify and address specific learning gaps.
A centralised tracking module is also being developed to monitor attendance and academic growth in Mathematics more effectively.
As part of the expanded programme, Special Mathematics Enrichment classes will continue to provide focused academic support to selected students. These sessions will be held in small groups of 20 to 25 students either before or after school hours. Eligibility criteria are based on previous academic performance — students in Classes VI, IX, and X must have scored at least 50 percent with grace marks or cleared their Mathematics subject through compartment exams, while those in Classes VII and VIII qualify if they scored 40 percent or below in the previous year.

Subject teachers may also nominate additional students based on classroom performance.
To ensure effective implementation, schools have been permitted to appoint resource persons for these sessions, with dedicated funding already allocated.

The results were declared by Higher Education Minister R. Bindu here on Tuesday (July 1, 2025). Hari Kishan Baiju of Cherai in Ernakulam is the second rank holder and B.N. Akshay Biju of Kakkur in Kozhikode is the third rank holder in the engineering stream. Hrishikesh R. The Minister said that of the 86,549 applicants who had appeared for the engineering entrance test, 76,230 had qualified. Subsequently, a rank list of 67,505 applicants who had furnished the details of their marks was prepared. Of the 33,425 applicants who appeared for the BPharm entrance test, 27,841 figured on the rank list. The KEAM examination for engineering and pharmacy courses was held from April 23 to 29. Ms. Bindu said that the engineering rank list had been prepared applying the new normalisation process. This was implemented to ensure a level-playing field for engineering aspirants from the State syllabus, addressing their long-standing concern that they were at a disadvantage compared with their counterparts from the Central Board of Secondary Examination (CBSE) and Indian Certificate of Secondary Education. The students from State syllabus schools had complained that they were losing roughly 15 to 20 marks in the normalisation process when KEAM scores where combined with higher secondary marks, especially in core subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. This time, the first rank holder in engineering is from a State syllabus higher secondary school. Of the first 10 rank holders, five each are from the State syllabus and the CBSE. Of the 47,175 applicants in the State syllabus, 43 figured in the first 100 ranks. Of the 18,284 in the CBSE stream, 55 figured in the first 100 ranks. The Minister said that the admission process for BTech courses would have to be completed by August 14 in line with the academic calendar prepared by the All-India Council for Technical Education.

Vedic maths to be added to NCERT textbooks for Classes 6 to 8 in Uttar Pradesh

In a new step towards revamping school education, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced that Vedic Mathematics will be introduced in NCERT textbooks for Classes 6 to 8 starting the 2025-26 academic session. This new addition will apply to all government-run schools in the maths, known for its quick and simple calculation techniques, will now be formally part of the school curriculum. It's being introduced as a way to sharpen students' numerical skills, reduce fear of maths, and bring Indian knowledge systems back into the mainstream -- just as the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) TEACHERS, CHANGING TEXTBOOKSTo make this change effective, teachers will be specially trained in Vedic maths techniques. New chapters on these methods will be included in the updated NCERT maths books. The focus will be on practical tricks using 16 sutras and 13 sub-sutras introduced by Swami Bharati Krishna Tirtha Ji in the early 20th century.'This is not just a method of calculation, but a cultural renaissance,' said Dr RK Mishra, a senior educationist. Experts believe that this approach will help boost both speed and accuracy in solving maths problems, especially for students who struggle with the subject.A PILOT MOVE THAT OTHER STATES MAY FOLLOWThe NEP 2020 encourages curriculum flexibility and local customisation. It gives states more freedom to incorporate regional knowledge, languages, and cultural the NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) creates standardised textbooks for schools following the CBSE or other centrally-aligned boards, the SCERT (State Council of Educational Research and Training) is the state-level counterpart which can tweak or supplement NCERT books as per local educational Uttar Pradesh SCERT is adding Vedic Maths as an additional component within the state's implementation of the NCERT UP government's move is part of a larger push to align with NEP 2020 by promoting Indian traditions in modern education.
