High-tea buffet opens with delights from Kedah and Penang
Diners in Kuala Lumpur can go on a culinary journey all around Malaysia, thanks to a high-tea buffet in the heart of the city.
At The Mesh, Four Points by Sheraton Kuala Lumpur, City Centre (Four Points KLCC), guests of its 'Jelajah Cita Rasa' afternoon treat will enjoy specialities from all around Malaysia on a rotating basis, alongside buffet staples, comfort foods and scrumptious desserts.
'The buffet brings a new concept focusing on Malaysian cuisine,' said chef Alan Wong.
'Every quarter, two states will be featured, starting from the northern states of Kedah and Penang.
'This rotating concept ensures a fresh, exciting menu for the year, allowing diners to explore the rich culinary heritage of all 14 Malaysian states,' added Wong, who is Four Points KLCC and Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel and Convention Centre multi-property culinary director.
Delectable traditional kuih for dessert make up part of the selection at The Mesh's 'Jelajah Cita Rasa' high-tea buffet that highlights dishes from around Malaysia on a rotating basis.
The journey begins with a vibrant lineup of appetisers including pani puri bursting with tangy spice, chicken tikka salad, earthy black mushroom salad and golden crispy bean curd skin rolls with a refreshing burst of flavour.
From the Penang station, there is the state's signature nasi kandar, featuring crowd favourites like ayam goreng rempah, kari bawal mamak and kari sotong.
There is also a variety of kerabu (local salad) such as kerabu daging kerisik, kerabu udang Seri Melayu and kerabu betik udang kering, as well as the beloved Penang pai tee, each delivering a mix of textures and tang.
The buffet also features comfort foods like spicy-and-sour soup, creamy pumpkin soup, hearty seafood porridge and an inviting selection of freshly baked breads.
The international section includes fresh sashimi, creamy pasta and seafood on ice.
According to Wong, the northern Malaysian dishes are crafted with a lighter use of spices to enable more diners to enjoy them.
To end the meal, diners can enjoy Ipoh's signature white coffee creme brulee, available alongside a selection of traditional Malaysian kuih.
'The Ipoh white coffee creme brulee leaves an unforgettable impression,' Wong said.

'Spice & Soul Of Malaysia' To Boost F&B Sector And Tourism
KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 (Bernama) -- 'Spice & Soul of Malaysia', a gastronomy and culture-driven initiative, has the potential to stimulate the country's food and beverage (F&B) segment and contribute to national economic growth. Tourism Malaysia Deputy Director-General (Promotion II) Lee Thai Hung said that last year, the export value of the segment recorded a 16.1 per cent increase, with the total reaching RM17.19 billion. 'Programmes like 'Spice & Soul of Malaysia' not only help market more local food products internationally and domestically but also have the potential to attract more visitors. 'We are also encouraging greater participation from industry players, including hotels and restaurants, to showcase the diversity of Malaysian cuisine,' he said at a press conference after officiating the programme here today. Held for the first time, 'Spice & Soul of Malaysia' is a strategic initiative by Tourism Malaysia to promote the country's tourism campaign for Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026), by highlighting its cultural heritage and unique culinary experiences to the world. Among its highlights is the introduction of Midnight Supper, a late-night dining culture that is part of the Malaysian lifestyle, besides participating hotels featuring ethnic-themed food presentations and decorations. Five entities are taking part in the programme -- restaurants under the Malaysian Muslim Restaurant Operators Association (PRESMA), Saloma Kuala Lumpur, Hotel Royal Signature, Hotel Saujana, and Ibis Kuala Lumpur. According to Lee, gastronomy is among the key factors tourists consider when choosing their travel destination. 'When someone travels, food is a primary element they seek. Through the Midnight Supper programme, which highlights Malaysia's late-night dining culture, we are able to showcase the diversity and uniqueness of our local cuisine to visitors.

Sabah forges independent path in sustainable tourism, rejecting simple benchmarks
Tan and Chan. KOTA KINABALU (July 15): Sabah is charting a unique course in sustainable tourism, prioritizing authenticity, inclusivity, and resilience over simplistic comparisons to established regional destinations like Phuket, Bali and Da Nang. This is the strong message from Datuk Tan Kok Liang and Prof Dr Jennifer Chan Kim Lian, two leading Malaysian tourism experts. They warn against benchmarking Sabah against these established players without considering crucial contextual differences. In a statement, Tan directly challenges the reliance on tourist arrival numbers as the sole measure of success. 'Direct comparisons ignore reality,' he says. 'Bali, Phuket, and Da Nang benefit from decades of massive infrastructure investment, centralized governance, and strong federal support — advantages Sabah lacks.' He champions Sabah's strengths in eco-tourism and community-based tourism, stressing the importance of sustainability and positive local impact over sheer visitor numbers. 'Comparing Sabah to mass-market destinations based solely on volume is fundamentally flawed,' he emphasizes. While acknowledging the need for infrastructure improvements (roads, airports), Tan highlights the critical need for inter-agency coordination and sustained political will. He dismisses concerns about air connectivity, citing 22 international destinations served by 170 weekly flights and a robust domestic network. He further underscores the vital role of domestic tourism in providing stability and supporting local businesses. Prof Dr Chan, Principal Fellow at Universiti Malaysia Sabah's Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancy, reinforces this perspective. 'We must compare apples to apples,' she states, adding 'A fair assessment requires considering Sabah's unique geography, political landscape, revenue streams and market segments.' She advocates for intelligent benchmarking that recognizes Sabah's unique strengths and long-term vision. Tan and Chan agree that while learning from others is beneficial, Sabah's unique trajectory demands respect. Only by benchmarking smartly— not blindly can stakeholders identify meaningful gaps, opportunities, and strategic directions for Sabah's tourism growth 'Sabah isn't playing catch-up; it's blazing its own trail,' they declare. The joint statement underscores Sabah's commitment to a sustainable tourism model tailored to its specific strengths and challenges, prioritizing its distinct identity and future.
