Sam Walker learns fate after sin-binning on NRL return

Yahoo7 days ago
Sydney Roosters star Sam Walker has avoided spending even more time on the sidelines after dodging suspension for his cannonball-style tackle on David Klemmer.
Injury-stricken Walker was sin-binned during his first game for 314 days and so faced a nervous wait after the 31-24 defeat of St George Illawarra at Kogarah Oval.
After full-time on Saturday, the 23-year-old told reporters it was "a bit ridiculous" to have been sent for 10 minutes for the shot, which Roosters coach Trent Robinson also downplayed.
"It didn't feel bad at all. I've made that tackle a million times and it's never been a penalty," Walker said.
"I personally think (the sin-binning) is a bit ridiculous ... There's not a world where I'm trying to hurt David Klemmer in a tackle like that."
On Sunday, the match review committee opted against charging Walker altogether.
A cannonball tackle is a shot where a defender enters the tackle late and targets the legs of the standing ball-carrier.
The tackle can cause serious injury, with Roosters forward Siua Wong in the midst of a six-week lay-off with a knee issue caused by a cannonball tackle from North Queensland's Karl Lawton, who copped a two-game ban.
On Saturday night, Klemmer went off after the shot but returned in the second half to finish the game.
Walker is now free to face Cronulla on Friday night and resume a season that has been significantly hindered by knee and thumb injuries.
The 23-year-old halfback looms as crucial to the Roosters cementing a spot in the top eight across the final eight rounds of the regular season.

South Africa wins U20 rugby worlds after 13 years by beating New Zealand in final

ROVIGO, Italy (AP) — South Africa won the under-20 world championship for the first time in 13 years after beating New Zealand 23-15 in the final on Saturday. The teams scored two tries each in a physical contest in sweltering conditions. South Africa had the best scrum and New Zealand the better lineout. But South Africa exploited New Zealand's greater indiscipline as flyhalf Vusi Simphiwe Moyo landed five out of six goalkicks. New Zealand loosehead prop Sika Pole was issued a 20-minute red card for head-on-head contact in the first half but only three points were conceded. But after lock Xavier Treacy's late yellow card, South Africa secured its second junior world title thanks to fullback Gilermo Mentoe pouncing on scrumhalf Haashim Pead's chip into the in-goal. Moyo converted from the sideline for 23-8 with only minutes remaining. New Zealand remained the tournament's most successful side with sixth titles — the last in 2017 — but it has lost seven straight times to South Africa at the junior worlds. ___ AP rugby:

All Blacks 'punched in nose' before beating France

New Zealand captain Ardie Savea said his side were "punched in the nose" despite recovering to beat France 29-19 and complete a series clean sweep. Having trailed 10-0 early on and 19-17 at half-time, the All Blacks only took the lead with 20 minutes to go against an under-strength French team in Hamilton. Will Jordan, Anton Lienert-Brown, Du'Plessis Kirifi and debutant Brodie McAlister all crossed for New Zealand while Racing 92 scrum-half Nolann Le Garrec starred for France converting his own early try and striking three penalties. It meant France's tour ended in a 3-0 All Blacks series win after the hosts won 31-27 in Dunedin and 41-17 in Wellington earlier this month. New Zealand's team in Hamilton featured 10 changes to their previous starting XV and flanker Savea admitted his new-look side had been caught off guard. "We got kind of punched in the nose in the first half and then, you know, we came back in the second," he said. "We were able to build phases and build pressure. We converted it into points." All Blacks coach Scott Robertson added: "We'll be better for the experience as a group. Ten points down at one stage and we found a way, played some really good footy and we're better for it." Later on Saturday, debutant Marnus van der Merwe scored two first-half tries to help South Africa thrash Georgia 55-10 in a one off Test in Nelspruit. Vano Karkadze crossed inside three minutes to give Georgia a shock lead but the Springboks responded with nine tries to extend their unbeaten run to eight matches.
