With their recent play, Red Sox have proved they're worthy of acquiring reinforcements
Alex Cora was cobbling together lineups that looked better suited for the longest road trip of spring training.

But the Sox survived, Sunday's 4-3 victory against the Dodgers was the latest example of their resilience. Down 3-1, the Sox scored three runs in a span of two pitches in the fifth inning.

Roman Anthony lined a ball off the Wall and hustled to third with an RBI triple. Alex Bregman hit the next pitch from Dustin May 400 feet into the Monster Seats.
Four relievers combined to get the final 12 outs.
Wonder if all those Red Sox season-ticket holders who sold their ducats to road-tripping Dodgers fans were regretting not being there to see it?
'We're playing really good baseball the last month and a half,' said Ceddanne Rafaela, whose unassisted double play bailed Jordan Hicks out of a jam in the eighth inning.

'We're a good team. All the players, we believe that.'
With 55 games remaining in the season, the 57-50 Sox hold the second wild card in the American League by a half-game over Seattle. They have won 14 of 19 since July 4.
The Sox also have reclaimed home-field advantage at Fenway Park. They are 34-21 at home with victories in 11 of the last 13 games.
On June 16, a day after the Devers trade, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow flew to Seattle and told the players he had not run up a white flag. The message was he still believed in this team.
Now it's time to back up those words with actions.
At the very least, the Sox require a reliable starting pitcher and a reliever Cora can trust in a tight game.
If Marcelo Mayer's wrist injury is serious, then another infielder is needed as well.
It feels too greedy to also expect a first baseman. The point is there are several avenues Breslow can take to improve the team.
As Thursday's trade deadline approaches, Cora straddles the line between being close with his players yet part of management.
'It's hard, but you know how it works. Over the years I've learned to stay in the moment and keep going,' he said. 'Our job is to win games.
'Putting pressure on the front office and putting pressure on [ownership], it doesn't work that way. Either we're going to go one way or we go the other.'
Cora was then quick to point out that he sees the Sox as being a playoff team.
Within a clubhouse, players believe a team should be rewarded with reinforcements at the deadline if they are contending for the postseason.

Breslow understands that ethos. He was a member of the 2013 Red Sox, who sent Jose Iglesias to Detroit as part of a three-team trade that sent Jake Peavy to Boston.
Iglesias was a promising 23-year-old shortstop but the Sox were deep at that position. Peavy started 10 games that season, then three more in the postseason.
Peavy allowed one run over 5⅔ innings in Game 4 of the Division Series against Tampa Bay. The Sox went on to a 3-1 series-clinching victory with — wait for it — Breslow getting the victory.
Now it's Breslow's job to find the 2025 version of Peavy. Or maybe it's the 2025 version of Steve Pearce.
'It'll be interesting to see what happens the next few days,' Garrett Crochet said. 'Have we earned the right to get better? I think so. We've been fighting through it.'
The Sox are off on Thursday.
'Kind of weird,' outfielder Rob Refsnyder said. 'We'll be watching like everybody else.'

Red Sox's 'Dominant Late-Inning Reliever' Not Fulfilling Front Office's Expectations
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. When Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow spoke to the media following the shocking Rafael Devers trade in June, most of the attention was understandably on the reasons why the team decided to send away its superstar slugger. In the midst of that virtual press conference, though, Breslow tossed in one line about one of the returning pieces in that trade -- a comment that indicated he and the front office had very, very high hopes for one player in particular. "We're absolutely excited about bringing in Jordan Hicks, a dominant late-inning reliever into our mix," Breslow said. MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - JULY 28: Jordan Hicks #46 of the Boston Red Sox delivers a pitch against the Minnesota Twins during the ninth inning at Target Field on July 28, 2025 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - JULY 28: Jordan Hicks #46 of the Boston Red Sox delivers a pitch against the Minnesota Twins during the ninth inning at Target Field on July 28, 2025 in Minneapolis, far, Hicks has not lived up to the billing, and his performance on Monday night in Minnesota was his second downright ugly outing in the span of a week. With Aroldis Chapman hurt and Garrett Whitlock sick, Hicks was tasked with securing the 4-3 lead, which the Red Sox had taken with an RBI single from Roman Anthony in the top of the ninth. Yet after Hicks warmed up, heavy rains rolled into Minnesota and caused a 90-minute delay. When he came back out for the bottom of the ninth, he gave up a single to DaShawn Keirsey Jr. before hitting Mickey Gasper with a wild slider. After hitting Gasper, Hicks' very next pitch resulted in another hit batsman, this time putting Willi Castro -- who had been squaring to bunt -- aboard to load the bases. Hicks did induce a fielder's choice from Carlos Correa to record the first out of the inning, but Brooks Lee was able to slap an 0-2 fastball into left field, plating two runs and giving Minnesota a 5-4 walk-off victory. The blown save for Hicks came exactly one week after his disastrous outing in Philadelphia. Though that one was overshadowed by the rare walk-off catcher's interference, Hicks issued a four-pitch walk to the first batter he faced and then threw a wild pitch when Max Kepler tried to lay down a sacrifice bunt. Just three of Hicks' 10 pitches that night were strikes. Hicks did make two scoreless appearances in between those outings, but overall, he's allowed at least one run in four of his nine appearances with Boston. He's struggled with command, throwing strikes on just 57.2 percent of his pitches in July. He has two losses and a blown save to go with his two successful saves thus far. He's posted a 4.91 ERA and a 1.636 WHIP in his 7 1/3 innings of work, with five strikeouts, five walks, and two hit batsmen. That all might technically show some improvement from his 6.47 ERA in San Francisco this year, but he's still a far cry from the "dominant late-inning reliever" that Breslow excitedly sold the fan base six weeks ago. Ex-GM Offers Noteworthy Jarren Duran-Red Sox Update Ahead Of Deadline
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Few teams have as much uncertainty across the board as the Boston Red Sox ahead of the MLB trade deadline. A lot of the lingering questions that remain centered around Jarren Duran. The Red Sox will have to make a decision on the outfielder ahead of Thursday's MLB trade deadline. The case for and against trading him are both clear and understandable. Boston has an outfield surplus that it won't be able to magically solve this year and beyond. Then again, Durran has turned himself into a valuable big leaguer on an affordable contract. WASHINGTON, DC - JULY 04: Jarren Duran #16 of the Boston Red Sox drives in a run with a single in the second inning against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park on July 04, 2025... (Photo by) More Boston also wants to compete this season but is building toward the future. Keeping Duran helps in the short term and trading him would help build for the long term. At this rate, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow can't afford to rule out anything, and it sounds like that's how he's operating. The Athletic's Jim Bowden reported Tuesday that the Sox are still listening on offers around Duran despite other reports that indicated he'd be staying put. "The Red Sox have been discussing Jarren Duran with several teams -- not because they necessarily want to trade him but because they like the outfield of Wilyer Abreu in right, Ceddanne Rafaela in center and Roman Anthony in left field, and Duran should not be a full-time DH at his age," Bowden wrote for The Athletic. "If the Red Sox trade him, it will be for a starting pitcher and perhaps a first baseman if they can find the right deal." That last "if" is a huge one. The Red Sox would have to thread the needle if they were going to trade Durran and still try to compete this season, which they absolutely should be doing based on how they've publicly positioned themselves. But there aren't a lot of great options that satisfy short- and long-term needs at either pitcher or first base, as Bowden lays out. The San Diego Padres and Philadelphia Phillies are two teams that would make sense for Durran and have been tied to him to some extent during baseball's trade season. But the Red Sox shouldn't be looking to add a rental like San Diego's Dylan Cease, and it's hard to believe Philly would part from its rotation with World Series aspirations. Maybe prospect Mick Abel is a worthwhile long-term investment, but the Red Sox almost certainly would be hurting this season's chances by making that deal. These sorts of intricacies probably point to Durran staying put, but it sounds like they aren't ruling out anything yet. Expert picks & predictions for tonight's game between the Red Sox and the Twins Rotoworld Best Bet Vaughn Dalzell (@VmoneySports) likes the value on Boston to miss the postseason: 'Boston has the third-toughest remaining strength of schedule (.516 winning %). Let's look at the first 15 games of the second half for Boston: 3 road games at the Cubs (1-2 record)3 road games at the Phillies (1-2 record)3 home games vs the Dodgers (2-1 record)3 road games at the Twins (0-1 record)3 home games vs the Astros That schedule alone could put them behind and make a +105 to -115 bet became -200 to -300 quickly (already -180). During the All-Star break, I played Boston at plus-money to miss the postseason and think it's still a good bet after losing three of four after the break.' Please bet responsibly.
