Disc Herniation: 4 exercise that can bring relief

Disc Herniation: 4 exercise that can bring relief

Time of India4 days ago
Disc herniations are becoming more common day by day. Affecting approximately 5 to 20 adults out of every 1000 adults (According to NCBI). A herniated disc is a condition affecting the spine in which annulus fibrosus is damaged, enabling the nucleus pulposus (normally located within the center of the disc) and has become one of the most common causes of back pain.
Disk herniation is most often the result of a gradual, aging-related wear and tear called disk degeneration. Sometimes twisting and turning while lifting can also cause a herniated disk. And as people age, they become less and less flexible and more prone to tearing or rupturing with even the slightest twist.
What are the symptoms of disc herniation?
The most commonly occurring symptoms of disk herniation are: (Mayo Clinic):
Numbness or tingling in spine:
Most people who have a herniated disc often have radiating numbness or a tingling sensation in their backs.
Weakness:
muscles served by the affected nerves tend to weaken. This can cause you to stumble or it can affect your ability to lift and hold items in future.
Lower back pain:
The pain is likely felt in the thighs and calf muscles. You might also have pain in some parts of your foot.
How to know if you have a herniated disc
Over 85% of patients with symptoms associated with an acute disease of herniated disc will resolve within 8 to 12 weeks, as per a study published in the
National Library of Medicine
, titled 'Disc herniation'.
However, for those who have an abnormal neurological condition, further evaluation and treatments are needed.
X-ray:
Almost every clinic does X-rays. This imaging technique can be used to ass for any structural instability.
CT scan:
It is the preferred study to visualize bony structures in the spine. It can also show calcified herniated discs.
MRI:
It is the preferred and most sensitive study to visualize herniated discs.
MRI findings will help surgeons and other providers plan procedural care if it is indicated.
Safe and effective exercises for disc herniation
Cobra pose:
This pose effectively relieves back pain. Lie on your stomach with both hands on the floor near your chest; slowly straighten both arms so that your head, chest, and shoulders are off the floor. Hold for 10 seconds, lower your head, chest, and shoulders, and repeat at least 5 to 10 times.
Cat-cow pose:
This stretch combines two yoga poses that help create space between the disks that are causing you pain and relieve the pressure on your spine.
When doing this pose, get on your hands and knees and look upward. Imagine a string is pulling your belly button to the floor, creating an arch in your low back. Exhale and move into rounding your back and transition to looking downward at your chest. Repeat these alternating motions ten times for three rounds.
Bird-dog pose:
This exercise promotes good posture by working the deep spinal muscles and increasing low back muscle stabilization.
To do this exercise, start on your hands and knees with your knees bent and hands directly under your shoulders to ensure proper alignment. Make sure your shoulders are correctly aligned with your hands and your knees with your hips. At the same time, kick your right leg out while keeping it aligned with your torso.
Hold this position for a few pauses and return to your starting position.
Standing extension:
This exercise helps combat the habitual hunch that strains your back. This helps move the disks in a neutral position. To begin this exercise, start by standing up in a proper posture. Set your hands on your lower back and begin to push your pelvis forward. Keep extending your back until your gaze meets the ceiling. Start by doing this motion ten times for three rounds.

‘Foul play' alleged over solo BMC MRI tenders

Mumbai: In several tenders over the last couple of years, only one MRI manufacturer bid to supply machines for all four BMC-run medical college hospitals. Insiders now allege that the tender's terms were manipulated to favour this manufacturer, effectively blocking other companies from competing. A technical team comprising heads of radiology departments is responsible for deciding the required specifications. "These specifications heavily favour Siemens in the bidding process over a number of other companies. At this point, there needs to be a departmental enquiry into it after many years of delay, which impacted patient care," said a senior radiologist at one of the BMC hospitals. For instance, the tender specifies certain machine requirements, like 64 channels (which receive signals from the body), a gradient strength of 62 to 200 millitesla per meter (which affects image resolution and scan speed), and a 3-tesla rating. These conditions exclude several other companies like Philips, which offers only 32 channels, and GE Healthcare, which does not feature high shimmering -- mentioned as a requirement in minutes of the health department's meeting -- but provides "auto shimmering" instead. United Imaging manufactures this component in China. A Siemens Healthineers spokesperson said, "The tender's technical committee has engaged in multiple rounds of discussions with all prospective bidders. It is important to note that the specifications outlined in the tender are not unique to Siemens Healthineers. In fact, such units with comparable specifications have been procured by several government institutions across India." DMC (CPD) Sandhya Nandedkar said, "We extended it eight times because there was only a single bidder. Earlier tenders were cancelled due to higher quoted rates. The committee has been insisting that these requirements are necessary." One of the top former BMC officials said an earlier tender was set aside due to the lack of multi-bidder specifications. "It was turning out to be a more expensive endeavour as well. If the experts specifically wanted that particular machine for technical reasons, they could have opted for proprietary procurement instead of going through the farce of a tender process," said the official. Dr Neelam Andrade, Director of BMC Hospitals, said, "It was conveyed to all the HoDs that the terms should be such that multiple bidders can participate. We do not know why other companies chose not to come forward." A radiology HoD from one of the hospitals said, "We want to buy a high-end MRI for our poor patients, and we design the specifications accordingly. It's not that we want to favour Siemens; it's not our fault that no one else bids." A representative from one of the companies that participated in BMC's recent pre-bid meeting said, "One can bid only if there's a chance of winning. If the terms and conditions make it clear we won't win, we don't invest in the fees and earnest money deposits." BMC's AMC (health) Vipin Sharma and DMC (health) Sharad Ughade did not respond to queries till press time. Cancer research discovery shows promising results in diabetes prevention and treatment

Can diabetes be cured? We've been looking for a hopeful and positive answer to this question for a long time. Type 1 diabetes, a lifelong autoimmune disease, has long been considered incurable. However, a breakthrough during recent research might alter the way we approach the treatment of type 1 diabetes. What is Type 1 Diabetes? Type 1 diabetes is a chronic autoimmune disease where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. This leads to little to no insulin production, requiring individuals to take insulin daily to manage their blood sugar levels. Type 1 diabetes is often diagnosed in children and young adults. Around 1.3 million Americans live with this condition. While the cause is linked to genetics and other environmental factors, there is currently no cure. However, there might still be hope to prevent the lifelong disease. In a surprising scientific twist, researchers at the Mayo Clinic have found that a molecule known for helping cancer cells escape the immune system could be used to treat type 1 diabetes, a condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy insulin-producing cells. Originally studied in cancer research, this molecule may help prevent the destruction of pancreatic beta cells, the very cells that type 1 diabetes targets. What the research uncovers: A cancer molecule with an unexpected promise The breakthrough began with cancer research. Cancer cells often hide from the immune system by coating themselves in a sugar molecule called sialic acid. Dr. Virginia Shapiro, the lead researcher and immunology expert at Mayo Clinic, and her team wondered: What if this sugar shield could help protect healthy cells instead? In earlier research, Dr. Shapiro's group identified an enzyme called ST8Sia6, which helps tumor cells produce more sialic acid on their surfaces. This sugar layer makes cancer cells look 'normal' to the immune system, allowing them to escape attack. 'The expression of this enzyme basically 'sugar coats' cancer cells and can help protect an abnormal cell from a normal immune response,' said Dr. Shapiro, as reported by Medical Xpress. He added, 'We wondered if the same enzyme might also protect a normal cell from an abnormal immune response.' The way forward: Reprogramming the immune system In their latest study, published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation , the researchers applied this idea to diabetes. Using lab models that naturally develop autoimmune diabetes, they engineered pancreatic beta cells to produce the ST8Sia6 enzyme. This gave the cells a sugar coating, similar to what cancer cells use to hide. The results were impressive: in these models, the engineered beta cells were 90% effective in preventing the onset of type 1 diabetes. The cells that are normally destroyed in the disease remained protected. Key point: Targeted tolerance (without shutting down the immune system) Even more encouraging was what the researchers saw next. The immune system still worked as usual, fighting off other infections and diseases, but left the beta cells alone. Justin Choe, the study's first author and a dual-degree M.D.-Ph.D. student at Mayo Clinic, explained, 'Though the beta cells were spared, the immune system remained intact,' adding, 'We found that the enzyme specifically generated tolerance against autoimmune rejection of the beta cell, providing local and quite specific protection against type 1 diabetes.' This means the technique didn't require broad immune suppression, which is often risky and comes with side effects. Instead, it created a highly targeted tolerance, preventing the immune system from attacking beta cells, and only beta cells. A new path forward for transplant therapy? Currently, people with type 1 diabetes must use insulin therapy or undergo a pancreatic islet cell transplant. But transplantation requires immune-suppressing drugs to prevent the body from rejecting the new cells, a process that weakens the entire immune system. Dr. Shapiro believes her team's findings could lead to better transplant treatments. By engineering beta cells with ST8Sia6, patients might one day receive islet cell transplants without needing full immune suppression. As per Dr. Shapiro, 'A goal would be to provide transplantable cells without the need for immunosuppression.' He added, 'Though we're still in the early stages, this study may be one step toward improving care.' What's ahead? While the research is still in the preclinical phase, this discovery could mark a major step toward safer and more effective treatments for type 1 diabetes. The team plans to continue testing the technology, eventually moving toward human clinical trials. As of now, their work opens a new chapter in how scientists may retrain the immune system, not just to fight cancer, but to protect the body from turning against itself.
