The tick-borne disease turning MAGA-supporters vegan

'As I sit here eating my sad, mushy oatmeal with only organic strawberries and maple syrup, I'm disappointed that it isn't bacon and eggs or a big juicy steak,' laments Tiffany, a young mum from deepest Kentucky writing on Facebook.
'I've tried the plant-based meats and they are so horrible. I feel so cheated – I'd kill for a hamburger,' adds Paula, her profile photo showing her dressed in full camouflage while out riding a horse.
Both women are part of a US online community for people living with Alpha-Gal Syndrome (AGS) – a tick-borne illness colloquially known as the 'red meat allergy'.
The number of cases has exploded in recent years, with warmer temperatures caused by climate change bringing ticks to new areas and helping them to survive all year round. More than 30,000 Americans are now thought to be infected every year, up from around 4,000 only 15 years ago.
The syndrome, mainly caused by the bite of lone-star ticks, leads to a life-threatening allergy to certain animal products including beef, pork, lamb, and dairy. With few treatment options available, those diagnosed are forced – often begrudgingly – to adhere to a strict, plant-based diet.
Most cases have been detected in MAGA strongholds like Tennessee, Texas, and Kentucky – places where red meat is a way of life and veganism is treated with the same scepticism as the contents of Hunter Biden's laptop.
'I had someone tell me he felt less Southern because he couldn't have barbecue,' said Dr Scott Commins, an allergist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he currently treats around 3,500 AGS patients.
The disease is triggered when a tick bites a human and transmits a sugar known as alpha-gal into the bloodstream. Ticks pick up alpha-gal when they feed on mammals like mice, rabbits, or deer – animals in which the sugar occurs naturally.
If the tick later bites a human, it can inject those sugars through its saliva. Because humans don't naturally produce alpha-gal, the immune system sees it as a threat and starts producing antibodies to fight it.
The dietary complications arise because alpha-gal is also found in red meat and some dairy products; so once the immune system is primed, eating foods like beef, pork, or lamb can trigger an allergic reaction, typically between four to six hours after eating.
The most common symptoms include hives, headaches, and stomach problems. In more severe cases, patients can go into anaphylactic shock, a potentially fatal allergic reaction that requires immediate treatment with an EpiPen.
Not everyone who gets bitten will develop the allergy, but for those who do, even a small amount of red meat can trigger a reaction.
'You might eat a hamburger at six in the evening and feel fine – then wake up at midnight covered in hives. That delayed response makes the condition difficult to diagnose,' Dr Commins said.
The US Centre for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that around 450,000 Americans in total are now living with AGS.
'The range of these ticks is completely expanding. So what was at one point a southeastern US tick is now all the way up on our east coast to the Cape Cod area, like Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, but then also West to the Central US,' Dr Commins said.
While most people naturally recover within three to five years, many will be continually reinfected because of exposure to ticks due to their work or way of life, he said.
'I would say probably only 15-20 per cent of my patients recover because they spend a lot of time outdoors – either working on farms or riding horses, doing hobbies that take them outside – and it may take nothing more than one tick bite every other year to keep the immune system producing that allergic response to Alpha gal,' he said.
On average, it takes around seven years for a person to be formally diagnosed, due in large part to a lack of awareness among doctors and the public.
The outlook – ironically, given his penchant for burgers – has only been made worse by the Trump administration's recent slashes to the CDC's workforce and budget.
'We've been working on trying to raise awareness with the CDC to create a campaign for patients and then also for healthcare providers, but that's now been put on hold,' said Dr Commins.
There are some new and promising treatment options, however.
The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) approved a new drug, Xolairz, in February of 2024 that is showing promising results among AGS patients.
The drug is taken every month via an injection, and works by blocking immunoglobulin, an antibody involved in allergic reactions.
'It's pricey, but it really does seem to work well to block reactions to red meat that occur accidentally and keeps people safer,' said Dr Commins.
The main way to prevent and control AGS, however, is targeting tick populations.
'We haven't really done much to try and target ticks and drive down population numbers,' said Dr Commins.
'We have interventions with mosquitoes and other kinds of disease-vectors. We don't yet know much about the lone star tick and it's really under researched.'
Meanwhile the apparent spread of veganism in MAGA country has already been taken up by conspiracy theorists, who smell a government plot to put them off their meat.
'Do you think Covid vaccinations helped this explode? It taught our bodies to attack and put our immune system into overdrive. I have always gotten bit by ticks. Why now?' writes Greg, another unwilling vegan whose grill is now gathering dust.
Paula suggests smoking an aubergine, instead.

Woman's CHIN began to rot away after free cosmetic procedure involving burning laser went horribly wrong

An Orlando woman is facing 20 felony charges after she performed a procedure that made her patient's chin rot away. Gabriela Pereira, 29, was arrested last week for practicing medicine without a license to do so in Florida, according to an affidavit. The lawsuit claims that Pereira performed a fat–reducing treatment on the chin of her patient, Kelly Coelho, in April 2024 that caused a severe infection. Coelho, a hotel cleaner, visited Tonya Beauty Medical Spa in Orlando multiple times to receive Botox. During one of her visits Coelho allegedly told Pereira that 'she would love to get her double chin done,' but could not afford the procedure, which was reportedly more than $800. Pereira then offered to do the treatment for free in exchange for posting pictures of her results on the @tonyabeauty Instagram account, which has more than four million followers. The 29–year–old 'represented herself to be medically licensed' and provided the laser treatment, but she left the laser sitting too long on the chin area, which caused blisters and necrosis – the death of cells and body tissue. 'You go there trusting that they're going to do what you contacted them for and do a good job,' Coelho's attorney Felipe Mavromatis told Koco News. Coelho and Pereira began texting and sending audio messages via WhatsApp on almost a daily basis due to her complications and concerns, the lawsuit says. The patient was scared because she had a headache, a fever of 102 and there was pus coming out of her right eye. On April 22, 2024, Coelho reached out to Pereira again and told her she couldn't take it anymore, and had to go to hospital because she felt there was 'a serious infection in her chin area' and the area looked 'out of proportion'. Between April 22, 2024, and May 3, 2024, Pereira saw Coelho at Tonya Beauty a total of eight times after the procedure, attempting to treat the damage. Pereira even invited Coelho to her home to try and fix the botched job. 'Going as far as saying, look, come to my house, come to my home and I'll do these procedures for you on the weekend – rather than saying go to the doctor,' Mavromatis said. 'It's kind of egregious.' Eventually Coelho went to see Dr Stefannia Ezzi, who reported that the patient told her she was 'in pain, depressed and afraid she was going to die from the massive infection.' Ezzi ultimately healed the area except for some scar tissue through treatments using antibiotics and steroids, as well as drainage and ozone and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Tonya Beauty posted a statement in Portuguese on the Instagram page, insisting they have all necessary licenses. 'With over 10 years of experience in the market, we have built a solid reputation based on trust, professionalism, and excellence in advanced aesthetics,' the post said. But more people have reached out to Mavromatis with similar issues. The attorney says there is another lawsuit that is set to be filed this week with similar complaints against the clinic, including negligent hiring and negligent supervision. Pereira posted a $29,750 bond on the condition that she'd surrender her passport.

Pharmacists reveal the five things you shouldn't mix with your morning coffee

Experts are warning against taking five vitamin and mineral supplements with your morning coffee. Caffeinated foods and beverages have become staples in most modern-day diets, whether it be a midday pick-me-up or a boost of energy right before a workout. Two in three American adults drink some form of coffee every day, according to the National Coffee Association. And approximately 59 million Americans regularly consume some kind of vitamins or supplements. However, multiple pharmacists suggest not taking certain ones, including iron, calcium, magnesium and some vitamins, while sipping on a cup as it may reduce absorption in the body. Dr Philip Ngo, a pharmacist with over a decade of experience in community pharmacy, explained: 'For instance, iron absorption can be slowed by caffeine and caffeine can impact certain nutrients via its diuretic properties.' Caffeine and polyphenols found in coffee can act as diuretics, meaning they increase urine production. This can become a problem as water-soluble vitamins, which aren't stored in the body for long, can be flushed out through urine before they are fully absorbed. Additionally, the tannins in coffee can also bind themselves to certain mineral-based supplements, which can prevent proper absorption in the body. As a result, doctors recommend waiting at least an hour after drinking a cup of coffee to take supplements for better nutrient absorption. Below, details the five supplements you should avoid consuming with coffee: 1. Vitamin D Regularly taking a Vitamin D supplement can help improve bone health, muscles and immune health and studies have also shown that it can reduce the risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer's disease. However, experts say that drinking caffeine can reduce the production of Vitamin D receptors cells. This can hinder the body's ability to absorb the vitamin from supplements and food. As of 2024, about 42 percent of American suffer from Vitamin D deficiency. Low Vitamin D can lead to a loss of bone density, which can contribute to osteoporosis and fractures (broken bones) as well as muscle pain and weakness. Dr Elise Kim, a New York-based pharmacist, told Eating Well: 'Research suggests that caffeine may reduce the expression of Vitamin D receptors, which can lower vitamin D levels.' While more research is needed to discover why coffee affects cell receptors, a 2021 International Journal for Vitamin and Nutrition Research found initial links between high caffeine intake and low circulating levels of vitamin D in the blood. Dr Ngo suggests taking Vitamin D supplements with a meal that includes healthy fats to help improve absorption. 2. Calcium Similarly to Vitamin D supplements, calcium supplements also help improve bone, heart, brain and cell health, protecting against cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure. But due to the diuretic effect of caffeine, drinking coffee can interfere with how the body absorbs calcium from supplements by increasing the amount of calcium the kidneys eliminate through urine. This can lower calcium absorption in the body as most of it would be removed from the body instead of being reabsorbed by the kidneys, as evidenced by a 2012 Nutrition study. Adding milk to your coffee may help offset calcium loss and spacing out calcium supplements two hours after your coffee help support better absorption, Dr Kim suggested. A low calcium level, also known as hypocalcemia, can lead to a variety of health problems including muscle cramps, numbness or tingling, fatigue and bone problems like osteoporosis. In severe cases, it can also lead to seizures, heart problems and even breathing difficulties. 3. Iron The primary use of iron supplements is to treat or prevent iron-deficiency anemia, a condition where the body doesn't have enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body due to insufficient iron. Additionally, it is also prescribed to reduce fatigue, improve hair health, increase athletic performance and boost immunity. Iron is also crucial for brain function and taking supplements can enhance concentration, memory, and overall cognitive performance in those with low iron. However, doctors claim that caffeine and tannins in coffee present in the body after drinking a cup can bind to iron in supplement capsules, making it harder for the body to absorb the mineral. A 2023 American Journal of Hematology study found taking iron supplements after drinking coffee reduced body absorption by 54 percent. Dr Bo Wang, an internal medicine physician at the US Department of Veteran Affairs, told Eating Well: 'Having coffee with an iron supplement or fortified cereal may make your body absorb less iron. 'Over time, a heavy caffeine habit could potentially impact bone and mineral health.' To ensure maximum absorption, Dr Wang advised taking supplements with vitamin C-rich foods, such as lemons and oranges rather than coffee. 4. Magnesium Magnesium is a necessary mineral the body requires for the proper growth and maintenance of bones, nerve and muscle function, blood sugar management, blood pressure regulation and sleep quality. Those suffering from migraine headaches, Type 2 diabetes, low bone density, cardiovascular disease and sleep problems are usually advised to take magnesium supplements. But similarly to calcium, Dr Kim explained: 'Caffeine can increase calcium and magnesium loss through urine.' Caffeine can negatively impact magnesium absorption by increasing its excretion through urine, potentially leading to lower magnesium levels. Additionally, coffee contains tannins and phytates, both compounds that can bind to minerals like magnesium and hinder its absorption in the digestive tract. 5. B Vitamins Water-soluble B vitamins including B1, B2, B7, B9 and B12 play crucial roles in various bodily functions and are often taken as supplements to address deficiencies or support overall health. All of these vitamins are also essential for energy production, nerve function, cell growth, and red blood cell formation. However, the diuretic effects of caffeine can potentially cause problems with absorption of certain B vitamins as it can flush out the vitamin from the body through urine. As Dr Wong explained: 'B vitamins are water-soluble, caffeine's mild diuretic effect can increase how much your body excretes, especially with higher caffeine intake. 'Avoid taking supplements with coffee or tea. Wait an hour if you can. Water-soluble vitamins (C, Bs) are fine with or without food, but may go down easier after a meal.'
