Intimate partner control a crime as Hannah's Law comes into effect

The Age26-05-2025
Domestic violence laws have become stronger in Queensland from Monday, with coercive control made a criminal offence.
The change comes after Hannah's Law – named after Brisbane mother Hannah Clarke, who was killed alongside her children by her partner – was passed in parliament in March last year.
The offence – which includes controlling, physical and non-physical forms of domestic and family violence, such as financial abuse and verbal abuse – can now attract a maximum penalty of 14 years' jail time.
Attorney-General Deb Frecklington said she hoped to see an increase in family and domestic violence charges with the new laws in effect, with more offenders picked up before abuse turned lethal.
'We have seen the loss of too many lives. One death is too many,' she said.

'The tragic loss of Hannah Clarke and her three beautiful children – that is four deaths too many.'
Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Amanda Camm said coercive control 'almost always' an unpinning dynamic in domestic abuse situations.
'It can include physical and non-physical forms of abuse and creates a climate of fear, humiliation, isolation, that over time, erodes the victim's sense of identity, freedom and independence,' Camm said.

Urgent search for baby and two children missing from Gold Coast

A desperate search continues for two missing schoolchildren and a baby last seen on Queensland's Gold Coast on Friday. On Tuesday evening, police released photos of a 7-week-old baby girl, a 10-year-old girl and six-year-old boy. The image of 41-year-old Monique, who is described as caucasian, with dark brown hair and brown eyes, was also released. She is known to the children and is believed to be with them. Police did not share Monique's surname. Officers believe Monique is driving a white Nissan X-Trail and may be in the Tenterfield area in NSW's Northern Tablelands. The children were last seen near Mirambeena Drive in Pimpama shortly before 9am on July 18. Police and the children's family are concerned about their welfare due to their age. Anyone who may have seen the children or the Nissan, which bears the Queensland registration 992XPS, are urged to contact police.

Loving father Paul Leslie Matts, 37, dies suddenly while playing with his children on holiday

A family's seaside holiday has ended in heartbreak after a devoted father died suddenly. Police officer Paul Leslie Matts, 37, suffered a fatal medical episode on July 8 while playing with his children on the beach. He is survived by his wife, Danni, their children Harlow and eight-month-old Xavier, as well as his stepchildren Archer and Jasmine. A sergeant with the NSW Police, Mr Matts had served the force for more than 16 years and was previously stationed in Coffs Harbour. Close family friends Jenna McAtamney and Sarah Wilkinson described the loss as devastating. They have launched a GoFundMe page to support his wife and children, who are now 'facing life without their loving dad and stepdad.' 'This loss has left the family devastated and in need of support as they begin to navigate this new reality,' the fundraising page reads. Mr Matts is also mourned by his parents, David and Julie, and his sisters Catherine and Rebecca. During his career, Mr Matts also served as the local officer in the small town of Burren Junction. In 2020, local MP Roy Butler publicly thanked him in parliament for organising a community fun day. 'To repay Burren for being so welcoming, Paul organised a family fun day for the town,' Butler said. 'He moved heaven and earth to put on an afternoon and evening of entertainment – from slip 'n' slides, a visit from Santa, and a raffle for a family holiday. The purpose of the event was twofold: to say thank you and to help people take their minds off the drought. On behalf of Burren Junction, thank you.' McAtamney and Wilkinson said Mr Matts was a 'great father' who 'will be very missed by his children.' They added that Danni is doing everything she can to stay strong for the family but cannot do it alone as she adjusts to the loss and the financial challenges it brings. Friends and loved ones have expressed their grief on social media. 'A beautiful soul gone way too soon. RIP buddy,' one wrote. 'So sorry for your loss David and Julie, thinking of you both,' another shared. 'Thinking of you Julie, David and family, sending my deepest condolences,' a third commented. 'So very sad to see someone so young pass away. RIP,' another added.

Forensic Science Queensland director Linzi Wilson-Wilde resigns following suspension

The director of Forensic Science Queensland [FSQ] has resigned after the state government last month issued her a show-cause notice. Dr Linzi Wilson-Wilde, who was appointed to the role in September 2024, confirmed to the ABC she had resigned. In a statement, she said she wished the lab nothing but the best. Attorney-General Deb Frecklington announced in June she had immediately suspended Dr Wilson-Wilde, pending a show cause notice for her removal. At the time, she said the action was taken after FSQ put a general pause on routine DNA testing following "contamination issues" that were identified. The government has not disclosed the nature of the contamination issues, but has confirmed routine DNA testing has since resumed. In a statement on Friday morning, Ms Frecklington said the Dr Wilson-Wilde's resignation was effective immediately. "Natasha Mitchell, Executive Manager Forensic Biology, will continue acting in the role of director until a permanent appointment is made," she said. "The Crisafulli government is firmly committed to the future of Forensic Science Queensland." FSQ is an independent statutory authority and forensic service provider, which supports the criminal justice and coronial systems with specialised services in forensic biology and forensic chemistry. Two commissions of inquiry, in 2022 and 2023, found serious failings over many years at the FSQ lab, including a "fatally flawed" automated testing method that might have seen offenders escaping conviction. Dr Wilson-Wilde became director in September 2024 after joining FSQ as interim chief executive in January 2023.
