Dakar legend Nani Roma and his ferocious Raptor get hero's welcome at Ford SA plant

This past week was a historic one for off-road racing in South Africa, with local and international stars going head-to-head in the country's first-ever Safari Rally.
Staged in the bushveld surrounding Sun City, the 1,222km rally was the first international Rally Raid championship round to be held on local soil.
The rally saw local heroes prevail, with Toyota Gazoo Racing driver Henk Lategan narrowly ousting former World Rally legend Sébastien Loeb, who was in a Dacia Sandrider, for overall victory, while Gareth Woolridge of the local Ford NWM team, took fourth spot.
Rally fans were also treated to their first sighting of the Ford M-Sport team's Raptor T1+, with international drivers Carlos Sainz and Nani Roma, both rally stars in their own right, taking fifth and seventh positions after struggling to come to terms with the local terrain.
To capitalise on the 'gees', Ford South Africa brought Roma and his ferocious Raptor to the Silverton assembly plant on Monday, to give plant workers as well as local media members an inside view of Ford's international racing efforts.
Amid much jubilation, with Ford's employee choir putting on a stellar performance, Roma and Ford's motorsport management members received a warm South African welcome as the former Dakar winner revved his Raptor and recounted his life as a rally driver. This took place during a slightly extended lunch break, which Ford SA CEO Neale Hill said had a minimal impact on output, but brought a big boost in morale.

Roma received a warm South African welcome.
Image: Supplied
Roma is one of just three competitors to have won the Dakar Rally on two wheels as well as four, winning with KTM in 2004 and Mini in 2014, and he joined the Ford M-Sport outfit in early 2023.
Speaking with local media after the event, the Spanish driver said this was the first time in his career he has felt that the company's board truly loves motorsport.
Roma acknowledged that he was not happy with this year's Safari Rally result, but said the positives outweighed the negatives, as much was learned about the car and the unfamiliar racing terrain.
He said the relatively narrow tracks as well as the tall grass and rocks made it difficult to read the track ahead. 'But it's great discovering new areas, new types of terrains.'
Describing his time in South Africa, he said 'We feel really welcome, everywhere we go. In many countries that's not the case, but here it feels really nice.'
The other star of the show, Nani's Raptor T1+, made its Dakar debut at the beginning of 2025.
The purpose-built Rally Raid machine boasts multi-adjustable suspension by Fox, allowing up to 350mm of wheel travel and a 400mm ground clearance.
The vehicle features a T45 steel spaceframe and carbon fibre body panels, while power comes from a 5.0-litre Coyote V8 with a uniquely tuned (and thunderous sounding) exhaust system.
'Taking on such a demanding race like Dakar is a daunting task for all of us at Ford Performance, but we have never shirked a challenge,' said Mark Rushbrook, Global Director of Ford Performance Motorsports.
'The Ford Raptor T1+ is a stake in the ground for our global off-road vision - we want to take on the best and prove ourselves in the toughest places on earth.
'The lessons we are learning from Raptor T1+, along with competing with stock trucks in Baja 1000 and Finke Desert Race, will help make Raptor vehicles even better for our customers.'

Another SA vehicle recall: Do you own one of these models?
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has confirmed the recall of the Ford Ranger, Everest, EcoSport, and Puma vehicles as notified by Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa. This is due to several faults in Ford models including some from 2021. Ford has issued a recall for certain 2022 to 2025 model year Ranger and Everest vehicles, specifically the Wildtrak and Platinum variants equipped with 3.0L Lion engines. These light commercial vehicles may have a serious defect where the left-hand camshaft sprocket on the engine could fracture, causing the engine to stall unexpectedly and increasing the risk of an accident due to sudden loss of power while driving. In the affected Ford Puma vehicles manufactured between November 2021 and September 2024, a fuel line may rub against a bracket, causing damage to the fuel line, the NCC said. Over time, this damage may reportedly lead to a fuel leak. In turn, a fuel leak could result in an engine stall or, if there is an ignition source, a fire. 'Owners might notice a fuel odour, fuel leaking beneath the vehicle, or smoke from fuel on a hot surface. The affected Ford Puma vehicles were available on the market from November 2021 to September 2024,' the NCC said. Additionally, Ford has identified a safety concern affecting 2021 to 2022 EcoSport vehicles equipped with a 6F15 automatic transmission. In some of these affected vehicles, the front half shafts may not have been fully inserted into the transmission during assembly. This defect could cause the half shaft to disengage from the transmission. If the half shaft disengages, there is a risk of losing engine power while driving. Moreover, if the vehicle is put in 'Park' without engaging the parking brake, it may roll away unexpectedly. Both conditions significantly increase the risk of an accident. Acting Commissioner Hardin Ratshisusu said given the risk associated with the reported defects, consumers who own any of these vehicles are urged to immediately contact their nearest Ford authorised dealership for inspection and, if necessary, repair at no cost. The affected vehicles were sold across South Africa. In May, the National Consumer Commission (NCC) also recalled several brands and models sold in South Africa. The vehicle recall was due to various defects found in the vehicles related, among other things, to airbags, axles, batteries, and seatbelts. The affected brands included Jeep Wrangler, Chrysler, Citroën, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, VW Polo and Sedan, and Volvo. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. JMC brand returning to South Africa with two new bakkie products
The JMC Grand Avenue will serve as the brand's flagship bakkie. Image: Supplied Just when you thought you might get through an entire week without hearing about another Chinese brand launching in South Africa, comes news that JMC is returning to our shores. But not only is the brand familiar to South Africans; its importer Salvador Caetano has already established itself through its retailing of the GAC brand since its launch in 2024. The collaboration between Salvador Caetano and the Jiangling Motors Corporation (JMC) is intended to revitalize the Chinese vehicle brand in South Africa, ensuring availability of parts, local service support and a range of vehicles tailored to the needs of local businesses. The current-generation JMC Vigus will be launched in 2025. Image: Supplied The brand reintroduction will kick off in this year with the release of the current-generation Vigus bakkie, but it will be followed in early 2026 with the introduction of a new-generation Vigus, available in single cab and double cab guises. This could be the new-generation JMC Vigus. Image: Supplied Also on the cards for local introduction is the more upmarket Grand Avenue double cab bakkie. Overseas the Grand Avenue is available with 2.3-litre turbodiesel and turbopetrol engines, which are based on Ford designs. The diesel unit produces 130kW while the petrol is good for 180kW, with an eight-speed automatic gearbox being available on both. For the record, JMC is Ford's manufacturing partner in China, and it produces the Ford Territory SUV that's sold in South Africa. For the commercial market, Salvador Caetano will also offer the JMC Carrying Plus range of trucks in South Africa, aimed at industries such as construction and logistics. JMC Carryin Plus Image: Supplied 'Partnering with JMC aligns perfectly with our vision of bringing trusted, high-performance mobility solutions to the South African market,' Leslie Ramsoomar, Managing Director at Salvador Caetano SA. 'We're proud to represent a brand that shares our commitment to reliability, innovation, and customer-focused service, delivering value to both lifestyle and commercial vehicle customers across the country.' More information on the local range, specifications and pricing will be released in due course. IOL Motoring

Salvador Caetano Auto South Africa announces return of JMC
As before, the Chinese commercial vehicle brand will launch with two bakkies, headlined by the returning Vigus. Along with the returning Vigus, the Grand Avenue will top JMC product range. Image: JMC Last present in South Africa almost a decade ago outside the truck segment, Chinese commercial vehicle giant, Jiangling Motors Corporation, better known by its abbreviation JMC, has announced its return to the local market via importer, Salvador Caetano Auto South Africa. Two models coming The current distributor of GAC Motor products, and soon of the marque's all-electric Aion division, the Portuguese conglomerate will kick-off JMC's return this year with the arrival of the revived Vigus bakkie, followed by the more upmarket Grand Avenue in 2026. Known for its partnership with Isuzu and since the early 1990s with Ford, who sells the JMC-made Equator Sport locally as the Territory, the pair of products will be distributed directly Salvador Caetano, but seemingly through separate dealership instead of existing GAC showrooms. ALSO READ: Vigus bakkie offers more bang for buck 'Partnering with JMC aligns perfectly with our vision of bringing trusted, high-performance mobility solutions to the South African market,' Salvador Caetano Auto South Africa Managing Director, Leslie Ramsoomar, said in a statement. 'We're proud to represent a brand that shares our commitment to reliability, innovation, and customer-focused service, delivering value to both lifestyle and commercial vehicle customers across the country'. What to expect? Vigus Arriving first, initially as a double cab with a single cab premiering next year, the Vigus once again uses the Chinese-market Yuhu as a base, but this time the Yuhu 9 that debuted in 2019 as a facelift version of the still in-production Yuhu 7 that went on-sale two years before. Vigus will lead JMC's return to South Africa. Image: JMC Its restyling having resulted in an appearance similar to the Ford EcoSport, the Yuhu 9 measures 5 375 mm long, 1 760 mm tall and 1 905 mm wide, with its wheelbase stretching 3 085 mm. Known as the Vigus Pro in Malaysia where sales started four years ago, the Yuhu 9, in China, derives motivation from Ford's 2.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine used in the domestic market Mondeo and Taurus. Based on the Yuhu 9, and called the Pro in Malaysia, the Vigus will likely offer petrol and diesel engines in South Africa. Image: In this application, it produces 153kW/325Nm directed to the rear or all four wheels through the ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic gearbox. Outside its home market, then Yuhu 9 also comes powered by the Blue Oval's 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine shared with the Yuhu 7, but with its origins from the older Puma unit rather than the current Panther mill. Interior resembles that of the two generations ago Opel Astra. Image: Reportedly related to the 2.2-litre found in the previous T6 Ranger and Everest, in the Yuhu 9/Vigus Pro, it develops 105kW/350Nm and is mated to the same eight-speed 'box, or as standard, a six-speed manual. Grand Avenue Set to arrive next year, the Vigus will be backed-up by a much newer model sold under the Dadao brand in China. Launched at the Beijing International Auto Show two years ago, with its name meaning avenue in Mandarin, the Dadao range comprises a single model, which will be called JMC Grand Avenue in South Africa. Styled to resemble, ironically, the Chevrolet Silverado from viewed from the front and the GWM P300 as well as an older Isuzu KB at the rear, the Grand Avenue comes in three variants, a workhorse, slightly wider upscale premium model, and a dedicated off-road version along the lines of the Ford Ranger Raptor. Based on Chinese reports, a choice of two engines are provided; Ford's 2.3-litre EcoBoost petrol developing 190kW/450Nm, and an enlarged 2.3-litre version of the 2.2-litre Puma turbodiesel rated at 130kW/450Nm. Transmissions are the same choice as the Vigus, namely a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic. Expect more details related to price and spec to be announced in due course.
