Royals' Salvador Perez aims to ride power surge vs. Jays

Reutersa day ago
August 3 - Salvador Perez is on a homer binge, and the visiting Kansas City Royals would like the trend to continue Sunday afternoon in the rubber match of their three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays.
The teams have split the first two contests of their series, with Perez hitting a home run in each game.
His second homer of the series came against Max Scherzer in the sixth inning of Toronto's 4-2 victory on Saturday. Perez also hit his first career homer against Scherzer on Aug. 29, 2011.
He has 11 home runs in his past 21 games.
"We need him and other guys to do it, too," Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. "You provide power in the middle of the lineup, and that is a big threat at any time."
Perez became the first Royals player to have nine seasons with 20 or more home runs. Hall of Famer George Brett had eight.
With 293 career home runs, he is close to becoming the eighth catcher to reach 300 in his career.
The Royals are going for a series win that would give them a good start to their nine-game road trip.
They hope that scheduled starter Seth Lugo (8-5, 3.03 ERA) can continue his success against the Blue Jays. The right-hander is 3-1 with a 2.21 ERA in 20 1/3 innings over six career games (two starts) against them.
The Blue Jays, who lead the American League East by four games, are expected to counter with right-hander Chris Bassitt (11-5, 4.24). In seven career starts against Kansas City, he is 1-2 with a 3.92 ERA in 39 innings.
The Royals picked up two more injuries on Saturday. Second baseman Jonathan India was hit by a pitch on his left wrist and forearm in the third inning. He left the game in the fifth.
"It's just a contusion," Quatraro said. "We got an X-ray and nothing is broken. Just sore. He has been battling that wrist, anyway, and he was hit there again."
Reliever Steven Cruz left in the seventh with discomfort in his right shoulder and he will have further evaluation.
"He felt a little pinching," Quatraro said. "Just kind of some normal throwing discomfort."
Blue Jays catcher Tyler Heineman left the game in the fourth inning with what was termed a head contusion.
He took a foul ball off his mask in the third inning and was hit on the hand by a pitch in the bottom of the third. Toronto manager John Schneider said that early indications were that he did not have a concussion.
"It's more of a head contusion," Schneider said. "When I went out there, it was more kind of a headache, and his jaw got it a little bit. So, we will check him out (Sunday) and, hopefully, dodge a bullet. But he is doing all right."
With catcher Alejandro Kirk on the concussion injured list, Ali Sanchez took over behind the plate. Kirk is expected to return to action on Sunday.
"(Heineman) wanted to keep going, felt like he could keep going and, unfortunately, you've got to take it out of their hands sometimes," Schneider said.
Toronto outfielder George Springer also is out with a concussion after being hit by a pitch against the Baltimore Orioles last week.
The Blue Jays returned from a 4-4 road trip for a short homestand. They will hit the road again Monday for six games against the Colorado Rockies and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

For starters, Mets need more innings with Guardians up next

August 4 - Sean Manaea has yet to exceed five innings or 86 pitches in any of his four starts this season. For the New York Mets, there's no better time for Manaea to change that trend than Monday night. The left-hander will attempt to provide some much-needed length when the Mets open a three-game series against the visiting Cleveland Guardians. Manaea (1-1, 2.08 ERA) is slated to oppose Guardians right-hander Slade Cecconi (5-7, 3.77). Both teams lost on Sunday afternoon. The Mets suffered a 12-4 defeat to the visiting San Francisco Giants in the rubber game of a three-game series. A ninth-inning comeback bid fell short for the host Guardians, who missed a chance to complete a three-game sweep by falling to the Minnesota Twins 5-4. Starter Frankie Montas gave up seven runs over four innings for the Mets, who haven't had a starter other than David Peterson pitch at least six innings since Clay Holmes tossed six innings in an 8-1 win at the Colorado Rockies on June 7. In that span, the Mets have lost Paul Blackburn, Griffin Canning, Tylor Megill and Kodai Senga to injuries, though Senga returned July 11. Senga, Montas and Manaea have all been on pitch counts for several weeks. Montas (lat) and Manaea (oblique, elbow) each missed most of the first half. The Mets got five innings of two-run ball from their revamped bullpen after Senga lasted four innings Saturday, but manager Carlos Mendoza went to mop-up man Austin Warren with New York down 7-1 in the fifth on Sunday. "It starts with starting pitching," Mendoza said. "We were able to match up (Saturday), ended up winning the game. But back-to-back games, that's almost impossible." Taking two of three from the Twins served as an encouraging sign for the Guardians, who tried threading the needle between selling and still attempting to mount a postseason run at Thursday's trade deadline. While the Guardians dealt former Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber and reliever Paul Sewald, they held on to All-Star leadoff hitter Steven Kwan as well as popular veteran presence Carlos Santana. Even with Sunday's defeat, Cleveland is 16-7 since July 7 -- a span in which they lost closer Emmanuel Clase to the restricted list. Clase and starting pitcher Luis Ortiz, who was placed on the restricted list on July 3, are each the subject of gambling investigations by Major League Baseball. The Guardians enter Monday three games behind the Seattle Mariners in the race for the final American League wild-card playoff spot. "There are a lot of different considerations that we had to weigh around this time of year -- the unexpected developments recently were certainly one of them," Guardians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti said Thursday. "But in the end, I think we feel good about the roster that we have for the balance of 2025 and are excited about our future." Manaea didn't factor into the decision in his most recent start last Tuesday, when he gave up one run over five innings as the Mets fell to the host San Diego Padres 7-1. Cecconi also didn't receive a decision in his most recent start July 28 after allowing three runs over seven innings in the Guardians' 8-6 loss to the visiting Colorado Rockies. Manaea is 3-1 with a 2.94 ERA in 33 2/3 innings over six career starts against the Guardians. Cecconi didn't factor into the decision in his lone previous appearance against the Mets on June 1, 2024, when he allowed one run, five hits and no walks with four strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings as the Arizona Diamondbacks earned a 10-5 road win. --Field Level Media

Division-leading Phillies like view with Orioles visiting

August 4 - The Philadelphia Phillies are back in first place in the National League East and the ultimate task is staying there. The Phillies hold a half-game lead over the New York Mets as they enter a three-game home series against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday night. Philadelphia took two of three from the American League Central-leading Detroit Tigers over the weekend, including a 2-0 win on Sunday night. Kyle Schwarber clubbed his 38th homer of the season to match Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the NL lead. Schwarber likes what he sees from a team eyeing a fourth straight playoff berth. "The biggest thing is we have a group where we know we can go really far in the playoffs and be where we want to be," Schwarber said afterward. "It's a day-by-day challenge. Obviously, we have our goals before that. We want to win our division." New closer Jhoan Duran notched his second straight save Sunday since being acquired from the Minnesota Twins before the trade deadline. "I think the overall message was we got a guy in the back end of the bullpen to where we know that if you hand him the ball, it's going to be tough to beat the guy," Schwarber said of Duran. The Orioles have lost three of their last four games, including a painful 5-3 loss to the Cubs on Sunday when Chicago pinch hitter Justin Turner hit a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning. Baltimore traded center fielder Cedric Mullins to the New York Mets and right fielder Ramon Laureano and first baseman Ryan O'Hearn to the San Diego Padres at the deadline, so there are openings in the lineup. One player who will receive a long look is Jeremiah Jackson, a second baseman whose path is blocked by youngster Jackson Holliday. Though he played in the outfield for just three games in the minors this season, Jackson was recalled after the deadline deals and started in right field for the final two games of the three-game set against the Cubs with Tyler O'Neill (illness) out of the lineup. Jackson, 25, was the designated hitter Friday in his big league debut. He went 3-for-8 with a walk in the series. Jackson batted fifth on Sunday. "Really just sticking to an approach," Jackson told reporters. "Just being ready and competing in the box, I think that's really been the biggest separator for me." Interim manager Tony Mansolino said Jackson was a great fit for the No. 5 hole. "I just need someone to make contact in that five-hole right there," Mansolino said. "You've got your four best hitters, and the odds are if you're going to create traffic, it's going to be with those four guys at the top. Whoever is sitting in that five-hole has got to put the ball in play. ..." Orioles left-hander Cade Povich (2-5, 5.15 ERA) will be activated off the 10-day injured list Monday to start against Philadelphia. Povich, 25, has been sidelined since mid-June due to hip inflammation. His last appearance came in relief when he pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings against the Los Angeles Angels to get the win. Povich has never faced the Phillies. His lone win in 12 starts this season came against the Washington Nationals on April 24. Philadelphia counters with left-hander Jesus Luzardo (9-5, 4.31), who blanked the Chicago White Sox on two hits over seven innings in a 6-3 win on Tuesday. Luzardo, 27, hasn't allowed an earned run in five of his victories and gave up just one run in three others. Luzardo is 0-2 with a 5.59 ERA in 9 2/3 innings over two career starts against the Orioles. --Field Level Media
