Willey backs earlier Finals Day in T20 Blast

BBC News20-03-2025
Northants Steelbacks captain David Willey has called for T20 Blast Finals Day to be reinstated earlier in the domestic season. The climax of county cricket's shortest format was played in July in 2022 and 2023, but was pushed back to September last summer. In the 22 years since T20 cricket made its debut in England, only four finals have been played in July, with the majority taking place in August - a month which is now dominated by The Hundred, and this year's Finals Day will be on 13 September."The schedule is ridiculous, I won't beat around the bush there. Having that huge gap before you play a quarter-final shafted us last year," Willey told BBC Radio Northampton."I think you need to block out parts of the season for each format. I think there's nothing better than you play the Blast finals just before The Hundred starts - it makes more sense to do that and then it's just where you fit the County Championship in around that."Willey believes the overall domestic season could be extended into the first part of October to fit everything in."I think the season could be pushed back a little bit, given the challenges groundsmen face to produce good wickets at this time of year, with usually pretty poor conditions," he added."Very often we put our feet up in October and it's glorious and dry, there is potential to do that."He continued: "Whether you do reduce games there (in the Championship), I don't know. I appreciate it's a busy season but part and parcel of county cricket, and actually one of the beauties of it, is that there's so many more dimensions than just preparing as best as you can for each game. There's a little bit of give and take along the way."
Willey bowled Northants to their first T20 title in 2013 with a hat-trick in the final and the Steelbacks lifted the trophy again in 2016.And he believes the arrival of Australian Darren Lehmann as head coach will help them challenge again after reaching the quarter-finals last year.Willey previously played under Lehmann in The Hundred for Northern Superchargers and described it as a "really exciting appointment" for the club."He's a self-confessed cricket nut, he studies the game, watches the game, played county cricket for Yorkshire for some time - he was an incredible player and has won pretty much everything there is to win as a coach as well," Willey said."That knowledge and understanding of the county game, understanding the schedule of the county game is a big part of it, and he'll be able to push guys and challenge guys with the care that he does is going to be great for the club."Northants start the new season on 4 April with a County Championship game against Kent - and their T20 Blast campaign begins on 30 May when they are away to Yorkshire, the former club of both Lehmann and Willey. Although primarily a white-ball player nowadays, Willey is willing to consider playing some Championship cricket in the right circumstances."Come September, if the side are in a position to play for something - I don't want to take a position if there's nothing to play for, get young guys ready for the following season - but if they're in contention for promotion and if they need me, I'll try and help the boys out and get us across the line," he said.Although now 35, and having retired from international cricket in 2023 after 116 white-ball games when he was not offered a new ECB contract, he still believes he could do a job for England. The all-rounder added: "The senior bowlers that have been playing have very often suffered with injuries and to have someone that's been in global competitions and been around the group a long time, I feel I could still add value helping the next crop of English white-ball cricketers coming through."

Will Norwich and Olympiacos give us a pre-season THRILLER? Championship club and Evangelos Marinakis' side are 10/1 to provide us with over 5.5 goals!

Norwich City are adding more continental flavour to their pre-season diet as they take on Greek champions Olympiacos in the Netherlands. Having beaten Northampton Town (not so continental) 3-1, then drawn 1-1 with Volendam and Zulte Waregem, Liam Manning's men now add some Champions League ilk to their schedule. The Championship side will hope to catch Evangelos Marinakis' club on an off day when they meet at 11am on Friday. Sky Bet are offering various odds for under/over a certain amount of goals in the game. If you reckon there will be 5.5 or more, then they cater to that fancy with a 10/1 offer. At the other end of the scale, if you think there will be fewer than 0.5 goals - which sounds like a 0-0 to you and me - then the odds are 14/1. For 3.5 goals or more, you're looking at 15/8, but if you're predicting under that, the odds will be 2/5. Sky Bet odds for Norwich vs Olympiacos - match over/under goals 0.5 goals - over 1/50, under 14/1 1.5 goals - over 1/5, under 10/3 2.5 goals - over 8/11, under 1/1 3.5 goals - over 15/8, under 2/5 4.5 - over 9/2, under 1/7 5.5 goals - over 10/1, under 1/25

Leaders Surrey hit back at Scarborough but clash with Yorkshire heading for draw

Leaders Surrey's Rothesay County Championship Division One clash with Yorkshire is heading towards a draw after the visitors hit back strongly at Scarborough. Surrey are just 179 runs adrift of Yorkshire's first-innings 517 for six declared – which featured Matthew Revis' unbeaten ton – as they ended day three on 338 for four. Revis completed his century on the third morning, hitting 110 runs from 134 deliveries as he was supported with an unbeaten 45 from Dom Bess. Bess then starred with the ball to dismiss Dom Sibley – who became the first player to reach 1000 County Championship runs this season – for 52 and Will Jacks for 17, while Surrey skipper Rory Burns scored 78. The Yorkshire spinner also claimed the scalp of Dan Lawrence, who fell for 78, but Ryan Patel ended the day unbeaten on 86 and the chances of a winner appear slim. Tilak Varma scored 112 as Hampshire dashed title-chasing Nottinghamshire's hopes of victory. In response to Notts' first-innings 578 for eight declared, Hampshire reached 367 for six. Joe Weatherley and Fletcha Middleton both scored 52 before being dismissed by Mohammad Abbas but Varma led the fightback for Hampshire, while Felix Organ finished the day not out on 71. Essex are closing in on victory at Sussex despite James Coles' unbeaten 99. Sussex are 245 for seven in their second innings and still 55 runs behind Essex, who posted 504 at the start of the third morning. Sussex's pursuit got off to a poor start when Tom Haines was dismissed for one in the second over and fellow opener Daniel Hughes fell shortly afterwards. Tom Alsop led the fightback with 72 and was aided by Coles' 99 not out but Matt Critchley finished with figures of three for 33 as Sussex's middle order were restricted to single scores. Warwickshire require another 338 runs with eight wickets remaining in a mammoth chase as their derby clash with Worcestershire hangs in the balance. Ethan Brookes scored 87, backing up a career-best 140 from the first innings, as bottom-of-the-table Worcestershire set the hosts 393 to win. Warwickshire lost both openers inside the first four overs and they ended the day on 55 for two, with both sides harbouring hopes of a win on day four. In Division Two, Rehan Ahmed's stunning match continued as leaders Leicestershire look to clinch victory at second-placed Derbyshire. Ahmed made it 10 wickets in the match by taking the hosts' first four wickets in their second innings, with Derbyshire still 348 runs behind. Ian Holland starred with the bat, scoring 90 before being caught and bowled by Alex Thomson – who finished with four wickets – and Luis Reece took five for 64 as the visitors declared on 236 for nine. Derbyshire's pursuit of 446 was plunged into trouble as Ahmed – who also hit a century in the match – claimed four for 41 runs as they tumbled to 98 for four at close. Glamorgan's chase of 189 to beat Kent got off to a shaky start as both openers departed. The hosts still require 164 to take victory after Asa Tribe and Zain-ul-Hassan were dismissed in the opening 10 overs. Kent duo Harry Finch and Grant Stewart had earlier both scored half-centuries to set Glamorgan their target of 189. Tom Hartley followed up his maiden first-class century by taking six wickets as Lancashire forced Gloucestershire to follow on at Cheltenham. Left-arm spinner Hartley claimed six for 116 as the hosts were dismissed for 381, with Ben Charlesworth's brilliant 160 a lone hand. Charlesworth continued to star in the second innings, hitting an unbeaten 61 as his side closed on 98 without loss. They still trail Lancashire, who made 557 in their first innings, by 78 runs. Northamptonshire were also forced to follow-on as Middlesex closed in on victory, leading by 300 runs and requiring seven more Northants wickets. Saif Zaib scored 82 for the visitors at Merchant Taylors' School but Ryan Higgins and Noah Cornwell finish with four and three wickets respectively, as Northamptonshire fell for 261 in response to Middlesex's 625. After enforcing the follow-on, Higgins struck twice in the same over to dismiss Ricardo Vasconcelos and Aadi Sharma as Northants closed day three on 64 for three.
