Goldman ICBC Wealth JV CEO Leaves Amid China Growth Pains

Mint8 hours ago

(Bloomberg) -- Goldman Sachs Group Inc.'s top executive at its wealth venture with China's biggest bank is leaving and may join a Japanese rival, people familiar with the matter said, as foreign firms struggle to gain a foothold in the country's asset management market amid deepening economic strains.
Alex Wang, chief executive officer of Goldman Sachs ICBC Wealth Management, will step down after almost 15 years at Goldman's asset management affiliate in China, the people said, asking not to be identified because the matter isn't public. He has been in discussions to join Nomura Holdings Inc. with a similar role to run its securities venture business, the people said, asking not to be identified.
Goldman will replace Wang with Zhang Yumeng, who took up a job as managing director of China at investment research firm Morningstar Inc. in January, one of the people said. He was formerly head of China at Legal & General Group, having also worked at Ping An Asset Management and Mercer International. The appointment is subject to regulatory approval.
Goldman Sachs' spokeswoman in Hong Kong declined to comment. Wang, who was also previously head of private wealth management in China onshore at Gao Hua Securities Co., didn't respond to requests for comment. Zhang and Industrial & Commercial Bank of China Ltd. couldn't be reached for comment outside business hours.
Wang's departure comes three years after Goldman's 51%-owned venture was allowed to roll out wealth management services in 2022. Although the tie-up with ICBC will aid product distribution on the mainland, it remains unclear how much it will overlap or compete with the Chinese lender's own wealth management unit, one of the people said.
Global firms have launched wholly-owned fund management units in China, but scaling up has proved difficult amid a sluggish stock market and intense competition from powerful domestic players that offer tailored, lower-cost products. Western firms may find it challenging to match the deep-rooted networks and regulatory rapport that the local incumbents have enjoyed, while a regulatory push to lower management fees has further squeezed margins.
New York-based Goldman's China wealth push was built on expectations of rising demand from a growing affluent class. It previously estimated Chinese households will have 450 trillion yuan ($63 trillion) in investable assets by 2030, with around 60% flowing into non-deposit products such as securities, mutual funds, and bank wealth management, according to a 2021 announcement when it established the venture with ICBC.
But demand has waned as consumers hoard cash amid a prolonged property slump and mounting US–China tensions, sharply curbing investment appetite. The Goldman ICBC venture manages 28.2 billion yuan as of December 2024 and has launched over 100 products, including cross border investments under the qualified domestic institutional investor program,RMB fixed income, and quantitative strategies.
Meanwhile, Nomura has scaled back its original focus on China wealth, cutting staffing by about two-thirds in the business over the past two years to prioritize an expansion in brokerage and asset management in the world's second largest economy, people familiar said earlier.
The Tokyo-based firm has been seeking a new chief executive officer for its securities business in China for months as its joint venture faces pressure to revive its performance after posting losses every year since it was formed in 2019. While it was confident that its expertise of catering to rich Japanese would help give it an edge in China, its wealth business push has teetered under President Xi Jinping's 'common prosperity' drive, a slowing economy and stiff competition.
Rival UBS Group AG last year also postponed plans to build its own mutual fund business in China due to the large capital commitment and a dim profit outlook, people familiar with the matter have said. The bank had been contemplating a stand-alone fund platform after China lifted foreign ownership restrictions in 2020.

Mukesh Ambani, Gautam Adani join hands, set to reshape This Indian Sector, Reliance issues statement, says…

Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani (File) New Delhi: In a major development, two of India's richest businessmen, Reliance Industries Limited Chairman Mukesh Ambani and Chairman of the Adani Group Gautam Adani, have announced a partnership in country's fuel sector. The main motive behind the collaboration is to integrate their respective fuel station networks for wider access and improved consumer offerings. It is important to note that this is the second joint business initiative, following Reliance's acquisition of a stake in an Adani Power project in Madhya Pradesh last year. Partnership will 'redefine the auto fuel retail experience': Both Reliance and Adani Group have said that the will 'redefine the auto fuel retail experience for Indian consumers' and help scale the availability of high-quality fuels across the country. As part of the agreement, selected fuel stations operated by Adani Total Gas Ltd (ATGL) will begin selling Jio-bp's high-performance petrol and diesel. Meanwhile, CNG dispensing units from ATGL will be installed at Jio-bp's outlets. The agreement spans both current and upcoming stations from both companies. ATGL, a joint venture between the Adani Group and French energy giant TotalEnergies, operates approximately 650 CNG stations and is a major player in India's city gas distribution (CGD) sector. In contrast, Jio-bp—a collaboration between Reliance Industries and UK-based BP—manages a nationwide network of around 2,000 fuel stations. Jio-bp Statement Sarthak Behuria, Chairman of Jio-bp, said, 'We are united by a shared vision to offer our customers a superior selection of high-quality fuels. Jio-bp has always been committed to delivering an exceptional customer experience, and this partnership allows us to leverage each other's strengths to further enhance the value we provide to India.' Adani Total Gas Statement Echoing the collaborative sentiment, Suresh P Manglani, Executive Director and CEO of Adani Total Gas, commented, 'It is our shared vision to provide a complete range of high-quality fuels at our outlets. This partnership will enable us to leverage each other's infrastructure, thus enhancing customer experience and offerings.' The business relationship between the two conglomerates first took shape last year when Reliance acquired a 26 percent stake in an Adani Power project located in Madhya Pradesh. As part of that deal, Reliance secured 500 MW of electricity from the plant for captive consumption.

World economy faces 'pivotal moment', central bank body BIS says

Trade tensions and fractious geopolitics risk exposing deep fault lines in the global financial system, central bank umbrella body the Bank for International Settlements , said in its latest assessment of the state of the world economy . Outgoing head of the BIS, often dubbed the central bankers' central bank, Agustín Carstens, said the U.S.-driven trade war and other policy shifts were fraying the long-established economic order. He said the global economy was at a "pivotal moment", entering a "new era of heightened uncertainty and unpredictability", which was testing public trust in institutions, including central banks . by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play War Thunder now for free War Thunder Play Now Undo The bank's report is published just over a week before U.S. President Donald Trump's trade tariff deadline of July 9 and comes after six months of intense geopolitical upheaval . When asked about Trump's criticisms of U.S. Federal Reserve Jerome Powell, which have included Trump labelling the Fed chair as "stupid", he was not overly critical. Live Events "It is to be expected at certain points in time that there will be friction," former Mexican central bank governor Carstens told reporters, referring to the relationship between governments and central banks. "It is almost by design". DOLLAR DROP The BIS' annual report, published on Sunday, is viewed as an important gauge of central bankers' thinking given the Switzerland-based forum's regular meetings of top policymakers. Rising protectionism and trade fragmentation were "particular concerning" as they were exacerbating the already decades-long decline in economic and productivity growth, Carstens said. There is also evidence that the world economy is becoming less resilient to shocks, with population ageing, climate change, geopolitics and supply chain issues all contributing to a more volatile environment. The post-COVID spike in inflation seems to have had a lasting impact on the public's perception about price moves too, a study in the report showed. High and rising public debt levels are increasing the financial system's vulnerability to interest rates and reducing governments' ability to spend their way out of crises. "This trend cannot continue," Carstens said referring to the rising debt levels and he said that higher military spending could push the debt up further. Hyun Song Shin, the BIS's main economic adviser, also flagged the sharp fall in the dollar. It is down 10% since the start of the year and on track to be its biggest H1 drop since the free-floating exchange rate era began in the early 1970s. He said there was no evidence that this was the start of a "great rotation" away from U.S. assets as some economists have suggested, but acknowledged that it was still too early to know given sovereign funds and central banks move slowly. Shorter-term analysis, though, showed "hedging" by non-U.S. investors holding Treasuries and other U.S. assets appears to have made an "important contribution" to the dollar's slide over the last few months. "We haven't seen anything (yet) that would give us any cause for alarm," Shin added. The BIS had already published one part of its report last week that gave a stark warning about the rapid rise of so-called stablecoins. In terms of the BIS' own finances, it said it made a net profit of 843.7 million IMF SDR ($1.2 billion), while its total comprehensive income reached a record high of SDR 3.4 billion ($5.3 billion) and currency deposits at the bank also reached a new high. "It is important that the BIS has the highest creditworthiness out there," Carstens said.

Indian auto delegation yet to leave for China for talks to expedite supply of rare earth magnets

New Delhi, Jun 29 (PTI) Indian Auto industry representatives are yet to leave for China to expedite the import of rare earth magnets as the delegation is still awaiting a formal go-ahead from the Chinese commerce ministry for a meeting, as per industry sources. Around 40-50 industry executives have received visas last month, but are still awaiting a formal nod from the Chinese authorities for the meetings on the matter. Staring at shortages, the domestic automobile industry has also sought government support in expediting approvals from China to import rare earth magnets. "They (Chinese authorities) have not given any appointment so far, so the delegation is yet to leave. Situation is bad as not even a single license has been issued to us so far," a source told PTI. If the situation remains like this, the domestic automobile industry will be staring at shortages resulting in significant production losses, the source added. The domestic auto industry is forced to take steps as the Chinese government has put restrictions since April 4 this year on the export of rare earth elements and related magnets. China has mandated special export licences for seven rare earth elements and related magnets. The country controls over 90 per cent of the global processing capacity for magnets, used across sectors, including automobiles, home appliances and clean energy. The critical materials include samarium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium and lutetium, which are essential in electric motors, braking systems, smartphones and missile technology. Rare earth magnets are integral to permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) used in EVs for high torque, energy efficiency and compact size. Hybrids also depend on them for efficient propulsion. In internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, the use of rare earth magnets is largely limited to electric power steering and other motorised systems. In April this year, China, the world's dominant exporter of rare earth magnets, imposed export restrictions on seven rare earth elements and finished magnets, mandating export licences. The revised framework demands detailed end-use disclosures and client declarations, including confirmation that the products will not be used in defence or re-exported to the US. India, which sourced over 80 per cent of its 540 tonnes of magnet imports from China last fiscal, has started to feel the impact.
