Famed Danish artist forest troll exhibit to make US debut at the NC Arboretum
ASHEVILLE - Peering through the wildflowers, white oaks and bonsais of the 434-acre North Carolina Arboretum, the botanical garden's black bears, wolves and foxes will be joined by a new group of creatures: Trolls.
Constructed by Danish artist Thomas Dambo, "Trolls: A Field Study by Thomas Dambo" will bring 12 life-size interactive wooden troll sculptures to the arboretum's trails and gardens in November.
It is the "most exciting exhibit" in North Carolina Arboretum history, Executive Director Drake Fowler said during the June 26 announcement at the gardens. Though Dambo's other exhibit "Trolls: Save the Humans" has toured cities across the United States, the field study exhibit will make its North American debut in Asheville. It's expected to draw visitors — some calling themselves "Troll Hunters" on social media — from across the country.
The trolls, described as "baby trolls" compared to the artist's previous exhibits, are made out of wood like branches, wooden pallets and twigs. While previous exhibits had trolls that stood as tall as 42 feet, the arboretum's will stand 7 feet to 9 feet tall, according to a June 26 news release.
While the exhibit is active, the folklore-inspired trolls will be studying the "small, intricate and inventive ways of life in Western North Carolina," according to the release.
Each is designed to have its own unique personality and the arboretum is planning educational programs and local artist features to coincide with the exhibit. Six trolls will be "honored guests" during the arboretum's annual Winter Lights show, which runs from from Nov. 15 to Jan. 4, 2026.
"Thomas Dambo's use of reclaimed wood resonates deeply, especially considering the changes to our landscape after Hurricane Helene. With these trolls, guests will discover a renewed sense of fun, exploration, play and adventure," Fowler said in the release.
Visitors will be able to obtain a "treasure map" to find the trolls, including their leader "Taks." Each is designed to have a unique personality to "reveal a fresh perspective on what makes us human," the release said.
Six will be located along the arboretum's trails and six will be located in its gardens. The exhibit will run through Feb. 17, 2026.
"Trolls: A Field Study" was produced by the traveling exhibition company Imagine in collaboration with Dambo and is being presented by Explore Asheville, Buncombe County's Destination Management Organization. The exhibit made its world premiere on June 21 in the United Kingdom.

Cole has never failed to send any of his proper solo albums to No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The rapper has collected a half-dozen champions on that tally under his own name, but one stands out from the rest as not only one of his most beloved projects, but also easily his longest-running success. It is that full-length, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, that helps the hip-hop powerhouse reach a landmark number he has never seen before. 2014 Forest Hills Drive Hits 550 Weeks on the Billboard 200 2014 Forest Hills Drive reaches 550 weeks on the Billboard 200 as it holds on and charts once again. Luminate reports that in the past tracking period in the United States, the decade-plus-old collection shifted 10,000 equivalent units. That's fairly consistent with how it performed just a few days ago. J. Cole Joins Eminem and Kendrick Lamar It is rare for any musical act to keep an album on the Billboard 200 for a decade, let alone push past that milestone. Cole is one of only a handful of hip-hop musicians to reach 550 frames on the ranking of the most consumed albums in the U.S. With this one title's success, he joins stars like Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, and 2Pac, who have all managed the feat before him. 2014 Forest Hills Drive Outpaces All J. Only one other collection, Born Sinner, his sophomore full-length, has pushed past triple-digit stays. 2014 Forest Hills Drive has lived on the Billboard 200 for so long that it has racked up more weeks on the tally than all of his nine other charting wins combined. That roundup includes five other projects that have held on for at least a year, including Born Sinner, The Off-Season, KOD, Cole World: The Sideline Story, and 4 Your Eyez Only. Morgan Wallen and Post Malone's 'I Had Some Help' rises on the Hot 100 in its fifty-eighth week, ... More surpassing 'Wasted on You' as Wallen's third-longest charting hit. NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - MAY 02: Morgan Wallen performs onstage during night one of his One Night At A Time 2024 tour at Nissan Stadium on May 02, 2024 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Photo byfor Morgan Wallen's One Night At A Time 2024) Morgan Wallen's new album I'm the Problem is on track to lead the Billboard 200 for a sixth consecutive week when the company refreshes its rankings tomorrow (Tuesday, July 1). More than a dozen of the tracks featured on the full-length are still present across a variety of Billboard rankings, and likely will be for weeks to come. Americans are still finding time to listen to one of his No. 1 smashes, which is now well over a year old. As millions of people stream and buy 'I Had Some Help,' the tune continues to appear on the charts as well. Its popularity has helps the track break out of a tie within Wallen's own discography. Morgan Wallen's Third-Longest-Charting Hot 100 Hit 'I Had Some Help' has now lived on the Hot 100, the most competitive songs tally in the United States, for 58 weeks. By holding on, it breaks out of a tie with Wallen's own 'Wasted on You.' Both tunes had been matched as the country singer-songwriter's third-longest charting successes, with each claiming 57 frames apiece until this frame. Now, 'Wasted on You' has been pushed to fourth place within his catalog in terms of the longest stays on the Hot 100. 'You Proof' and 'Last Night' Only two other tunes by Wallen have lived on the Hot 100 for longer stays, and 'I Had Some Help' isn't far behind either of them. The Grammy nominee's sturdiest hit remains 'You Proof,' which racked up 62 appearances on the tally, while 'Last Night' managed 60 just a few months after 'You Proof' peaked. 'I Had Some Help' Rises on the Hot 100 'I Had Some Help' rises from No. 15 to No. 13 on the Hot 100 this frame. Billboard has a rule stating that after a full year on the chart, songs must remain above No. 25, or else their time on the tally is over. The duet, which features both Wallen and Post Malone, debuted in first place in May 2024, and has been a hit ever since. It may very well continue to appear on the Hot 100 for several more weeks — if not months — as it remains one of the biggest songs in the country. 'I Had Some Help' is a Streaming, Sales and Radio Hit 'I Had Some Help' is being supported by every consumption metric that fuels the Hot 100. The track lives at No. 14 on the all-genre Streaming Songs chart and dips slightly to No. 22 on the Radio Songs ranking. It's also still performing well on some pop radio stations and on a number of Billboard's country-only tallies.
