Iran-Israel news: Drone targets Iraq's Taji military base near Baghdad
'An unidentified drone targeted a post in the Taji base,' Lieutenant General Walid al-Tamimi told the official INA news agency.
The commander of Baghdad's operations said there were no casualties. However, a security source told AFP the first attack on a radar system at the Taji base caused only material damage.
Another drone fell in the Radwaniya district, 10 kilometres west of Baghdad International Airport, where US troops are deployed in a base as part of an anti-jihadist coalition, the source added.
There was no claim of responsibility for the attack.
The strikes came hours after Iran launched missiles at a US military facility in Qatar in retaliation for the American bombing of Tehran's nuclear facilities.
Iraqi security sources told AFP that "so far" Iran had not attacked bases hosting US troops in Iraq.
On Monday, US President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Iran had agreed to a 'complete and total ceasefire" soon after Iran launched a limited missile attack on a US military base in Qatar, retaliating for the American bombing of its nuclear sites.
But the status of a possible ceasefire remained unclear as attacks continued Tuesday.
Iran's foreign minister said that as long as Israel stopped its attacks by 4 a.m. local Tehran time Tuesday, Iran would halt its own. But nearly an hour after that deadline, Israel's military warned its public that Iran had launched missiles towards it as sirens sounded.
In 2020, the US-led international coalition troops withdrew from the base and handed it over to Iraqi security forces. The base had historically held up to 2,000 coalition members.
The base, 20 km (12 miles) north of Baghdad, had been the site of frequent rocket attacks by Iran-backed militias targeting US-led troops months before the withdrawal.

Shah, who served as Gujarat home minister under Modi's CM-ship, became the country's home minister on May 30 2019 and is serving. Apart from the home ministry, he is also the country's first cooperation minister.

Russia ups military ante, drops all restrictions on ground based short range missiles
Moscow, Aug 5 (UNI) As the Russia-Ukraine war progresses with no seeming end in sight, Russia has upped its military ante and dropped all restrictions on the deployment of ground-based intermediate-short-range missiles (INF), said Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov. "Russia no longer has any constraints in this regard. Russia does not consider itself limited by anything anymore. Russia considers itself entitled to take relevant measures and steps, if necessary," Peskov told the press, reports state media TASS. Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Moscow no longer considers itself bound by self-restrictions on deploying intermediate-and shorter-range missiles as the conditions for observing the moratorium have disappeared. Stating that the West's actions regarding Ukraine have made any room for adhering to the INF next to impossible, Peskov added that these actions now constitute a 'direct threat' to Russia's national security. As such, Russia is no longer obliged to adhere to the treaty, he noted. The Russian statement further added: 'Decisions on specific parameters of response measures will be made by Russia's leadership based on an interagency analysis of the scale of the deployment of American and other Western ground-based intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles, as well as the overall development of the situation in the field of international security and strategic stability.' 'Totally out of control': Trump calls for prosecuting minors amid Washington crime concerns; threatens to take federal control

His comments came the same day the FBI released new data showing a nationwide drop in violent crime. In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, 'Crime in Washington, DC, is totally out of control. Local 'youths' and gang members, some only 14, 15, and 16-years-old, are randomly attacking, mugging, maiming, and shooting innocent citizens, at the same time knowing that they will be almost immediately released.' While sharing a photo of a critically injured youth from a recent violent incident involving local teenagers, Trump claimed the victim had been 'beaten mercilessly by local thugs,' though he did not provide specific details about the case. 'The Law in DC must be changed to prosecute these 'minors' as adults, and lock them up for a long time, starting at age 14,' he added. Trump also suggested that if city leaders fail to act, he would move to federalise the capital. 'They are not afraid of Law Enforcement because they know nothing ever happens to them, but it's going to happen now! If DC doesn't get its act together, and quickly, we will have no choice but to take Federal control of the City, and run this City how it should be run,' he said. Trump's remarks directly contradict the FBI's annual crime report, released earlier Tuesday. According to the report, cited by NBC News, violent crime in the US fell by 4.5% in 2024, with significant declines in murder, robbery, rape, and aggravated assault. Property crime and hate crime rates also saw drops compared to 2023. The report draws from data submitted by over 16,000 law enforcement agencies, covering 95% of the US population. FBI Assistant Director Timothy Ferguson noted during a media briefing that although crime is down overall, violent and property crimes still occur regularly. Trump has frequently made crime a central theme in his political messaging, often portraying American cities as lawless.
