PETRA,TNB To Install Solar PV Systems In Mosques, Promoting Energy Transition

Barnama26-05-2025
PASIR PUTEH, May 26 (Bernama) -- The Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA), through Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) corporate social responsibility initiative, will install solar photovoltaic (PV) systems at two mosques with an allocation of RM130,698.
PETRA secretary-general Datuk Mad Zaidi Mohd Karli said the mosques, Masjid Al-Hijrah at the Fishermen Resettlement Area (PSN) in Tok Bali, Pasir Puteh, Kelantan, and Masjid Al Huda in Kampung Rantau Abang, Dungun, Terengganu, received allocations of RM41,999 and RM88,699 respectively.
He said the installations would reduce monthly electricity bills, promote environmental sustainability, raise community awareness, and help lower carbon emissions by replacing conventional energy sources with solar power.
"These CSR projects are crucial in our efforts to bring the energy transition closer to the people, and solar power is one of the key initiatives under PETRA.
"We call on other companies to follow TNB's example and take part in this energy transition efforts," he said when met at Masjid Al-Hijrah recently.
He said the solar PV systems will be installed under the Net Energy Metering (NEM) GoMen scheme, whereby solar energy generated during the day will be used for electricity, and any excess energy will be exported to the TNB grid.
"The exported excess will be recorded and reimported for use at night," he said.
Meanwhile, the imam of Masjid Al-Hijrah PSN Tok Bali, Amirul Mukminin Mohd Roslan, said the solar project would benefit more than 1,200 residents.
"InsyaAllah, there will be more programmes and activities at the mosque, especially at night, once the solar system is installed. It will also help reduce the monthly electricity bill," he said.

SWITCHING ON ENERGY AWARENESS

ARE we truly mindful of the energy we consume? Seemingly small actions — like the flick of a switch or leaving smartphones charging all night while you sleep — when multiplied across households and communities, result in unnecessary energy wastage. The way we use energy today impacts our tomorrow, leaving the next generation to navigate the aftermath of our current behaviours. While many understand these repercussions, 'old habits die hard', as they say, which is why a fundamental change is needed to spark a change in energy awareness. Today's youth will need to be equipped with the skills and knowledge to navigate a sustainable future with an energy-conscious mindset. In this light, Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) and Star Media Group Bhd (SMG) are nurturing future changemakers through the Powering The Future (PTF) 3.0 school activation programme. Previous instalments travelled across Malaysia's west coast, covering Selangor, Melaka, Penang, Johor, Perak and Negri Sembilan, impacting 4,545 primary and secondary school students in all six states. This year, PTF 3.0 will cover five states: Pahang, Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and Perlis. The programme kicked off in Pahang two months ago and touched down in Kelantan last month. To date, PTF 3.0 has impacted 1,588 primary and secondary school students in Pahang and Kelantan. The goal is to reach over 3,200 students in all five states. Enhancing energy education In Terengganu, the official launch event for the state was held at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Bukit Bayas in Kuala Terengganu on June 30, with 84 Standard Five students taking part in the programme. True to its core mission, PTF 3.0 is designed to impart crucial energy conservation knowledge to students across primary and secondary schools through engaging and dynamic learning experiences. Younger participants dive into the world of renewable energy (RE) through an innovative RE model kit-building activity to grasp the fundamentals of clean power like hydro, solar and wind. This hands-on approach, complemented by a Kuntum edutainment workbook, aims to instil energy-efficient habits from an early age and foster lifelong appreciation for environmental stewardship. Meanwhile, secondary school students hone their critical thinking skills through immersive real-world simulations, tackling energy management challenges in domestic settings such as their homes and schools. A crucial component of their learning involves an introduction to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), providing them with a global framework for understanding and contributing to a greener tomorrow. Other participating schools in the state were SK Gong Tok Nasek, SK Tengku Ampuan Mariam, SK Kubang Ikan, SK Losong, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sultan Ahmad, SMK Tengku Bariah, SMK Seri Budiman, SMK Padang Negara and SMK Megat Panji Alam. As an added boost to their learning journey, all participating students receive a complimentary one-year e-subscription to The Star, encouraging English literacy while reinforcing the vital message of energy conservation. TNB Terengganu retail head Mohd Zaiddy Mat Rajali said the programme aims to bring the younger generation closer to the world of energy and sustainability, as they will have an important role to play in helping the country achieve cleaner and more sustainable energy usage. 'We (TNB) aim to champion comprehensive efforts in sustainable energy usage, including the utilisation of RE sources such as green energy generated from hydroelectric power and large-scale solar farms,' he said. 'This year's programme has been designed to resonate with today's youth, with various exciting activities, educational games and quizzes. 'By carrying out these activities, they will better understand how every small act we make in efficient energy use can have a significant impact on the world. SK Bukit Bayas principal Khairul Nizan Khmis said he feels very fortunate to have the programme held at the school, describing it as an initiative that personifies their aspirations to empower the next generation. 'PTF 3.0 inspires, uplifts and gives recognition to our students. This kind of exposure is truly meaningful for them,' he said. 'The students have responded positively to activities and the programme could be the starting point that ignites their spirit to shape a brighter future. 'We hope that the knowledge they gain today stays with them for life and they will always champion these energy-efficient practices.' As the programme moves north to Kedah and Perlis in the coming months, the goal remains unchanged – to spark curiosity, build awareness and cultivate habits that will shape a more energy-responsible Malaysia.

Hijrah a turning point for change, environmental action, says Sultan Nazrin

IPOH: All sectors of society must come together to address the escalating environmental crisis, and the beginning of the 1447 Hijrah should serve as a turning point for reflection and transformation - a moment to break away from the destructive depravity that continues to harm our planet. Perak Ruler Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah said the world today is facing a series of environmental phenomena that have triggered widespread disasters, endangering both human well-being and the sustainability of our planet. "The growing population, rising urban density, land clearing for new settlements, infrastructure development, urban expansion, and industrial activity have all directly impacted the natural environment. "This Earth belongs to Allah. Let us honour and give thanks for the divine blessings we have received - not by defying His commands, but by ending all forms of harm and injustice toward the natural world. Only then can we hope to be spared from the calamities of environmental destruction and live in peace beneath the shelter of divine mercy and compassion," he said when launching the state-level Maal Hijrah 1447H celebration here Thursday (June 26) night. Also present were the Raja Permaisuri of Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim and the Raja Di Hilir of Perak, Raja Iskandar Dzurkarnain Sultan Idris Shah. Sultan Nazrin said that this year, Perak has chosen the theme "Migration and Sustainability: Uniting the Muslim Community, Preserving the Earth" for the Maal Hijrah 1447 commemoration. "It responds to the escalating distress of our ailing planet, marked by increasingly frequent natural disasters such as earthquakes, landslides, erratic climate patterns, global warming, devastating wildfires, and widespread flooding, all of which continue to endanger lives and livelihoods," he said. His Royal Highness also said that Islam firmly prohibits all forms of pollution that harm the environment. "A damaged ecosystem not only affects humankind but also disrupts the balance of the entire natural world, leading to disaster and danger. "Destroying habitats and endangering the lives of other creatures is regarded in Islam as a grave sin, and those who commit such acts are condemned. It is profoundly irresponsible for individuals, whom Allah has blessed with intellect and reason, to knowingly choose the path of destruction," he said. His Royal Highness further said that Islamic outreach serves to liberate humankind from the chains of oppression, destruction, tyranny, division, devastation, abuse of power, and all that contradicts the true nature of human dignity. "Islam offers a path of renewal - grounded in values and noble character - that uplifts the worth of every individual, enhances the quality of life, nurtures the Earth, and restores rightful claims. "These rights are not limited to humanity alone, but extend to every element of creation. For nature, too, is part of the divine trust, ever in interaction with us and never passive in its response," he added. - Bernama
