SIBU (June 9): Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian wants community leaders to instil local values and culture in Sarawak's younger generation towards nation-building.
The Local Government and Housing Minister expressed his worries about the implementation of the state's free education policy starting next year, particularly for students pursuing their studies at Australian-based Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus.
'Between 3,000 and 5,000 Sarawak students will receive free education at the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) and Swinburne next year because we want high education standards, particularly Australian education.
'I am more worried for Swinburne because I am not sure if we are going to teach our students Australian education with Sarawak values.
'It is very important; otherwise, we will never teach Sarawak values to those (who will be) serving Sarawak,' he said when officiating the Sibu Chinese Community Leaders Association 20th anniversary celebration and 11th committee installation here last night.
Dr Sim also expressed concern that students might migrate to Australia, enticed by well-paying jobs after their graduation, as their degrees are recognised by the country.
'It would be like we are preparing 5,000 talents every year for migration.
'This is why it is important for us, community leaders at the forefront of Sarawak government, to teach them local values.
'It is similarly impoprtant for the people to maintain unity, stability and working together for shared prosperity, especially as Sarawak's economy is expected to continue flourishing in 2030,' he added.
Meanwhile, Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau was elected president of the association for the 2025-2026 term, with Pemanca Datuk Jason Tai, Pemanca Liong Khing Hee, Kapitan Fung Tat Shen, Penghulu Lau Hieng Wuong and Kapitan Ting Hua Chuan as vice presidents.
Kapitan Sim Tang Fei became secretary, joined by Penghulu Lim Kuah Liew as assistant secretary. Penghulu Yong Kin Sung took on the role of treasurer, assisted by Penghulu Tiew Siik Nieng.
Filling other key positions were Kapitan Chew Hoo Kiong (welfare officer), Kapitan Wong Chiew Sieng (assistant welfare officer), Kapitan Low Muong Ing (general affairs officer), Kapitan Lau Sei Kwang (assistant general affairs officer), Kapitan So Teck Kee (cultural officer) and Penghulu Kong Sien Min (assistant cultural officer).
The committee included Kapitan Ling Hua Wee, Kapitan Chua Kim Seng, Kapitan Wong Jont Kiong, Penghulu Wong Ung, Kapitan Connie Loh and Kapitan Peter Lau were the committee members.
Among those present were Dr Sim's wife Datin Amar Enn Ong and Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang.

Wall Street analysts bullish on Circle after blockbuster IPO, but warn on sky-high valuation
FILE PHOTO: Traders work on the floor at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), on the day of Circle Internet Group's IPO, in New York City, U.S., June 5, 2025. REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo (Reuters) -Wall Street brokerages began coverage of stablecoin issuer Circle Internet Group on Monday with broadly bullish ratings, though some analysts voiced concerns about its elevated valuation after the stock more than doubled since its market debut. The New York-based company's shares were down nearly 3% in premarket trading. Circle debuted this month at $69 per share in the first major IPO by a stablecoin issuer. The blockbuster flotation represents the biggest crypto listing since Coinbase's 2021 debut. The company had priced its IPO at $31 per share. J.P. Morgan, Citigroup and Goldman Sachs were the lead underwriters for the offering. After the industry-mandated quiet period expired, Barclays, Bernstein, Canaccord Genuity and Needham launched coverage with the equivalent of 'buy' ratings and price targets above $200. "CRCL is building a market-leading digital dollar stablecoin network, with a strong regulatory edge, liquidity headstart and marquee distribution partnerships. This is hard to replicate, in our view," Bernstein analysts said in a note. Circle is a blockchain infrastructure company best known for issuing USD Coin (USDC), a fully reserved, U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin used across crypto trading, payments, and decentralized finance. In June, the U.S. Senate passed the GENIUS Act with bipartisan support, marking a watershed moment for the digital asset industry by establishing the first federal regulatory framework for stablecoins. "CRCL is one of the only ways for public investors to play the blockchain infrastructure theme, and we believe stablecoins are nearing a pivotal turning point," Barclays said. However, J.P. Morgan and Goldman Sachs pointed to the stock's elevated valuation, given its rapid rise since the IPO. J.P. Morgan started coverage with the most bearish view on Wall Street - an 'underweight' rating with a price target of $80, implying a downside of 56% from the stock's last close of $180.43. "We view CRCL's business and growth attractively, but valuation appears elevated," said Goldman, as the brokerage started coverage with 'neutral' and $83 price target. Shares of Circle have surged 161% since their market debut. (Reporting by Rashika Singh and Siddarth S in Bengaluru; Editing by Tasim Zahid)

Dr Sim: SUPP will continue its role in Sarawak's nation-building, put Sarawakians first
SUPP Kuching chairperson Datuk Lily Yong (second left) presents a memento to Dr Sim. — Photo by Voon Siang Pin KUCHING (June 30): Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) will continue to play its role in the state's nation-building and always put the interests of Sarawakians above all else, said its president Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian. The Deputy Premier said the party, since its establishment in 1959, had faced challenges and setbacks but these did not deter it from moving forward. 'We have been able to get to where we are today, not just because we continue to play our part in Sarawak's nation-building but also due to our firm belief and commitment to such goal rather than staying with the party for vested interests,' he said in his speech at the SUPP Kuching 66th anniversary celebration held at a hotel here on Sunday night. Dr Sim said SUPP has always been a multi-racial party that has stood together with Sarawakians through political ups and downs, as well as reforms. He said SUPP was not 'here to get rid of certain political parties' but to discard the obsolete mindset that hinders Sarawak's nation-building and progress. He further pointed out that as the oldest political party in Sarawak, it aimed to serve all Sarawakians and not a specific group. 'This is the key to our continued growth. SUPP has been able to win support from Sarawakians because it adopted pragmatic and self-reform approaches within the political mainstream, including having resolved to embrace unity and diversity in the past political crisis.' He also thanked former chief minister, the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, for his support rendered when SUPP was struggling. 'We did not survive by cheering slogans, but action and commitment to make sacrifices have determined what we have today,' he said. He said that nobody looked up to Sarawak in the past but the state, after undergoing reforms and policy advancement, had become the new hope and focus of Malaysia. On the state's road to regaining autonomy, Dr Sim said the Malaysia Agreement 1963 had not been honoured for many years, which was the root cause for Sarawak's fight for equal treatment. He said Sarawak would continue to strengthen its autonomous powers in various fields including education while giving its best to improve economy and infrastructure. 'We don't just talk about nation-building—we build it with policies and results. We invest in education, provide monthly allowances and waive education fees for poor students in a bid to cultivate talents who can bring about change for Sarawak.' Although Sarawak does not get the desired allocations from Putrajaya, he said the state's current annual budget has grown to as high as RM15.8 billion to see more economic progress and infrastructure development. Dr Sim emphasised that the next five years would be a critical period for Sarawak's nation-building process, and thus called on Sarawakians to reject external destructive forces that create divisions and confusion. He also urged SUPP leaders and members to stay calm, remain united and continue to uphold the 'Sarawak First' principle. Dr Sim Kui Hian nation-building Sarawak FIrst Sarawak United People's Party
