It's raining global awards for PM Modi. He's bagged 13 in 3rd term alone, a whopping 27 since 2014
'I humbly accept this honour on behalf of 140 crore Indians…I dedicate this award to the people of Namibia and India, to their continued progress and development, and to the enduring strength of our unbreakable friendship,' Modi said during his acceptance speech.
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with his 27th international honour Wednesday—the 'Order of the Most Ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis'—during his visit to Namibia. This is the fourth award he has received in the past week, and the 13th since the start of his third term in June 2024.
Starting with Mauritius, Modi has received an award during almost every visit to a foreign country this year, including Sri Lanka and Cyprus before his current five-nation visit. These awards are given for various reasons, but are considered an important marker of the influence the individual has had on building ties between the two countries.
For example, the citation of the award from Namibia reads, 'His leadership, defined by technological innovation, economic growth, social and climate justice, and international diplomacy, transcends the borders of India.'
Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah said in the conferment of the award, 'Narendra Modi, who has significantly contributed to socio-economic development and the promotion of peace and justice in Namibia and globally.' The award has been conferred on Modi's first trip to the South West African nation.
The first of the four awards in the past week conferred on him was the 'Order of the Star of Ghana'. Conferred on 2 July, it was given in recognition of Modi's 'distinguished leadership, contribution to global development and deep commitment to strengthening ties between Ghana and India'. Some of the other foreign leaders to receive the Ghanaian award are Queen Elizabeth II, Nelson Mandela, Kofi Annan and King Charles.
The next one was conferred during the visit to Trinidad and Tobago—the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. A couple of days later, Modi received the 'Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross' by the President of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula de Silva.

From West Asia to Latin America
During his first two terms as prime minister, Modi was conferred with 14 international honours, primarily from West Asian nations, the neighbourhood and the Pacific Island States. A couple of Western nations, including the US, Greece and France, were some of the other nations to confer honours upon him.
His first international honour in 2016 came in from Saudi Arabia, the 'Order of King Abdulaziz', followed by the 'State Order of Ghazi Amir Amanullah Khan' from Afghanistan the same year. In 2018, he received the 'Grand Collar of the State of Palestine Award' during a visit to the city of Ramallah, where the Palestinian Authority is currently headquartered.
The Palestine visit was the first official visit by an Indian prime minister to the West Asian nation. India has recognised the State of Palestine since 1988, and hosts an embassy in New Delhi.
In 2019, the Indian Prime Minister received a raft of international honours, including 'King Hamad Order of Resistance' from Bahrain, the 'Order of the Distinguished Rule of Nishan Izzuddin' from the Maldives, and the 'Order of Zayed Award' from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
That same year, Russia announced its decision to confer the Order of St. Andrew on Modi. The Indian Prime Minister received the award during his visit to Russia last year.
In 2020, US President Donald J. Trump had awarded Modi with the US Legion of Merit—a decoration created specifically for foreign citizens in 1942. In 2021, Bhutan conferred its highest civilian award, the 'Order of Druk Gyalpo' on him, which he received last year.
The prime minister received a number of awards in 2023, including the 'Grand Cross of the Order of Honour' from Greece during his state visit. Other honours conferred on him that year were the 'Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour' from France, the 'Order of the Nile' from Egypt, the 'Ebakl Award' from Palau, the 'Order of Logohu' from Papua New Guinea, and the 'Companion of the Order of Fiji'.
In 2024, Modi was conferred with a number of honours from the Caribbean nations during his visit to the Guyanese capital of Georgetown in South America for the India-CARICOM Summit. He was conferred with the 'Dominica Award of Honour' from Dominica, the 'Order of Freedom' from Barbados and the 'Order of Excellence' from Guyana.
Before travelling to South America, the Indian Prime Minister made a visit to Nigeria, where he was conferred with the 'Order of the Niger' in November 2024. A month later, in December, he was conferred with the 'Order of Mubarak the Great' from Kuwait during his visit to the West Asian nation.
In April this year, Sri Lanka conferred the 'Mitra Vibhushana' on Modi, the highest civilian award given to foreigners. Also, in June, during a visit to Cyprus, he was conferred the 'Order of Makarios III'.
While the awards are a recognition of the individual's contribution to various areas, it does not necessarily change the course of diplomacy between nations.

Our courts confirm we're like this only
It is what it is. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court confirmed that India is not a liberal democratic society that puts the right of freedom and speech on par with - never mind above - the right to dignity . In other words, being offended gets a free hand to take punitive action against the person offending. The 2-member bench was hearing pleas against five standup comedians making 'insensitive jokes' - as opposed to 'sensitive' ones - about persons with disabilities. Where criticism would have been an earlier standard response against offensive remarks (that lie outside the ambit of fomenting enmity between communities), Article 21 of the Constitution, providing right to dignity, as part of right to life and liberty, has been stated to legally 'trump' Article 19, the right to freedom and expression. This observation mirrors the reality of how Indian society weighs freedom of expression Hearing a separate case on the same day, another Supreme Court bench granted cartoonist Hemant Malviya interim protection from arrest. He has been booked over a January 2021 cartoon mocking the PM and RSS over Covid vaccination. Such protection can be considered the limit of Indian liberalism's approach to satire, coming as it does a day after the court criticised Malviya for his 'immature' cartoon that portrayed its subjects in an 'undignified' manner after the accused apologised and deleted the cartoon from social does not share the kind of liberal leeway that countries allowing lampoons of PMs, presidents and monarchs still do. Perhaps, in this regard, it is ahead of the curve in a world growing increasingly truculent against sarcasm and jibes that were once frowned upon by hypersensitive parties, but legally tolerated.

State ATS to probe edu institute in Nandurbar
Mumbai: The state govt has ordered an ATS probe into the Jamia Islamia Ishatul Ulum educational institution in Nandurbar district on charges of allegedly employing two Yemeni nationals whose Indian visa expired in 2016. It has also lodged cases against the founder and chairman of the institution for allegedly procuring fake documents for them. In addition, minister of state for housing Yogesh Kadam said the ED would probe how the institution received foreign funds to the tune of Rs 728.6 crore. The state has also ordered a probe by a forensic auditor and legal advisor. When asked about the licence of the institution, Kadam said, "The charity commissioner is conducting a probe. If irregularities are found, then its licence will be suspended." After allegations were raised that it purchased land belonging to tribals, Kadam said that the land purchase by the institution will also be investigated. BJP MLA Gopichand Padalkar asked if the state will inquire into whether combing operations will be conducted on all madrasas to see if they are harbouring illegal immigrants. In response, Kadam said they will look into complaints they receive. You Can Also Check: Mumbai AQI | Weather in Mumbai | Bank Holidays in Mumbai | Public Holidays in Mumbai

Ties in region back in focus with PM's forthcoming visit to Maldives
Ties in the neighbourhood will come back into focus next week as Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Male on July 25-26 for the Independence Day of the Maldives, and sources say a long-pending visit by Nepal's Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to New Delhi is being planned shortly after his return. Mr. Modi was expected to travel to the U.K. to sign the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, but officials said the trip, which is still being planned for July 24, has not been 'finalised' and could be delayed. Mr. Modi is expected to land in Male on July 25, and will be given a ceremonial welcome. He will hold bilateral talks with Maldives' President Mohamed Muizzu, who visited India in June 2024 for Mr. Modi's swearing-in ceremony and then for a State visit in October. Among a number of development initiatives, both sides are expected to build on the launch of digital payment system UPI and mechanisms to increase tourist arrivals between both countries, officials working on the visit said. On July 26, Mr. Modi has been invited as a guest to the Independence Day parade and other special ceremonies to mark 60 years of the Maldives getting independence from the British in 1965. The invitation was announced by Maldives Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel during his visit to India in May this year. Officials said that India and the U.K. have also been discussing a short visit to London by Mr. Modi before he travels to Male, on July 24, to sign the FTA that was announced by him and Mr. Starmer on May 6. However, it is understood that some technical and 'legal scrubbing' is still required to be finished, and the trip may require to be put off or held after the Male visit. The visit to the Maldives is significant as it marks Mr. Modi's first visit to the neighbouring country since the election of Mr. Muizzu in November 2023. Ties between India and Maldives hit a rough patch over the 'India Out' campaign that Mr. Muizzu had backed during his campaign, and the 'Boycott Maldives' social media campaign that followed over criticism of Mr. Modi by Maldivian Ministers. However, the two sides subsequently resolved issues, after India agreed to replace military personnel stationed there for aircraft management with civilian engineers. India has also increased its Lines of Credit and outlay to Maldives from ₹470 crore in 2024-25 to ₹600 crore in the latest budget, and extended a much needed currency swap facility to help Maldives with its debt repayment crisis last year. Diplomatic sources further said that India is expected to host Nepal's Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli later this month and that discussions are on. Mr. Oli was one of the first regional leaders to condemn the terrorist attack in Pahalgam and, subsequently, India accommodated Nepalese citizens while airlifting stranded nationals from Iran against the backdrop of the Iran-Israel conflict. Mr. Oli in recent months, has also praised India for supporting the democratic process in post-monarchy Nepal. While plans are underway for the visit, there are also internal political developments in Nepal that will be taken into consideration at the planning stage. On Wednesday (July 16, 2025), Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal (JSP-N), withdrew support to Mr. Oli's government, reducing the ruling coalition to a minority in the Upper House of the Nepalese Parliament — National Assembly. Mr. Oli's India proposed visit has acquired heightened attention as he was sworn in on July 15, 2024 but has not visited India till now, but had visited China in December last year.
