Heartbreaking life of music superstar in 'greatest' film fans have just days to watch
The brief yet influential life of American Chicano rock and roll musician Ritchie Valens has been poignantly portrayed in the 1987 biopic La Bamba.
Penned and directed by Luis Valdez, La Bamba chronicles the life and fleeting musical career of Valens - renowned as a trailblazer of rock and roll and a progenitor of the Chicano rock movement.
Lou Diamond Phillips takes on the role of Ritchie Valens, sharing the screen with Esai Morales, Rosanna DeSoto, Elizabeth Peña, Danielle von Zerneck and Joe Pantoliano. The film also explores the impact of Valens' short-lived career on his girlfriend Donna Ludwig, his half-brother Bob Morales, and his family.
Named after a traditional Mexican folk song, La Bamba features a cameo from Ritchie Valens' real mother - Connie Valenzuela. The Valenzuela family were reportedly heavily involved in all aspects of the biographical film's production.
The stirring biopic is available to watch on Netflix until 31 May, reports the Daily Record.
Raking in $52.7 million in the United States over a 12-week release period, La Bamba garnered generally favourable reviews from critics and audiences alike.
One critic hailed Luis Valdez's creation as a "rousing foot-tapper", writing: "This rousing foot-tapper from the pioneering American film-maker Luis Valdez is the definitive Eighties music biopic.
Another review described La Bamba as: "Sweet and serious, a fine little movie that accomplishes just what it sets out to do."
One viewer was profoundly moved by the film, saying: "More than a week after seeing the film, I cannot shake La Bamba's people, its vitality, the freshness of its vision, and the profoundly honest way it views the milieu of its characters and the larger American canvas surrounding them."
A different review praised the movie's tone, adding: "Sweet and serious, a fine little movie that accomplishes just what it sets out to do."
The film was deemed the "greatest biopic ever made" by an enthusiast who said: "The greatest Bio Movie ever made! ! Lou Diamond Phillips and the cast give amazing performances."
An in-depth user review applauds the film's merits, stating: "You know for a movie that's in the Library of Congress, nobody really talks about La Bamba all that much. How come? This was a really good biography about a singer who was tragically gone too soon with spot-on casting, classic music and a lot of heart."
Further adding to the praise: "It's a decidedly unpretentious rags-to-riches biopic and even with the ending being a foregone conclusion for anyone who knows even the vaguest thing about Richie Valens, it doesn't stop it from being any less shocking and poignant. La Bamba is a criminally underrated movie and if you love biographies, then you should definitely check this one out."
Amid various reactions, one person said, "I wont lie, I did cry," while another expressed sheer admiration, claiming: "It's the best performance I've ever seen. Great story, great actors."
Another viewer chimed in with their take on the film, added: "Solid music biopic. Hits all the typical beats, but does so with a strong cast and performances that are endearing. Such a tragic tale, but an engaging one."

Love Is Blind star, 29, shows off results of hair transplant and reveals staggering five-figure sum it cost him
While many people head to countries like Turkey for cheaper treatment, the star said he wasn't keen on that route Hair Goals Love Is Blind star, 29, shows off results of hair transplant and reveals staggering five-figure sum it cost him Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) LOVE Is Blind star Jimmy Presnell has shown off the results of his hair transplant, revealing the staggering five-figure sum it cost him. "But there's a lot of things that come with that, and I'll explain that as well.' In the video, Jimmy told his nearly 90,000 followers that he booked in with Solve Clinics, based in the River North area of Chicago. He added: 'They charge roughly $5 a graft. I had a little over 2,000 grafts, I think 2,100 or 2,200. So roughly 10, 11 grand for the procedure." While many people head to countries like Turkey for cheaper treatment, Jimmy said he wasn't keen on that route. He said: 'When I was going through the evaluation process, I was getting quotes anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000. 'It included flight, it included hotel, all that good stuff, but there was no ongoing consultation or talking to your surgeon. "So they just pretty much send you home after the surgery. You don't really have any type of relationship.' Alongside the transplant itself, he's also been paying for extra treatments to boost the results. He explained: 'I have been doing PRP, which I've made some videos on that and what that kind of entails, and those typically run anywhere from 400 to $600,' referring to platelet-rich plasma therapy. First look at Love Is Blind UK series two with Matt and Emma Willis as Netflix reveals launch date Jimmy first documented the procedure back in December, posting daily updates as he healed. Just three days after going under the knife, he revealed: 'It's swollen bad. It hurts to smile, it hurts to laugh. My head definitely feels super dry.' He also made it clear the goal wasn't to wind the clock back completely, adding: 'I didn't want to try to have a hairline of a 17 or 18-year-old. It's not realistic. "I wanted to look my age and have thicker, healthier-looking hair. That's the goal here.' More recently, Jimmy marked the six-month point since surgery by posting a progress update on Instagram for his 274,000 followers. 'Officially 6 months post hair transplant with @solveclinics,' he captioned the clip. 'Super excited where I'm at already! Even more excited to see where it'll go!' Leaning in to show his new hairline, he told viewers: 'I saw a ton of growth in months four, five, and six.' And now? 'It's getting thicker and thicker as the days go on.' Jimmy shot to fame earlier this year when he appeared on Love Is Blind, where his ex-fiancée Chelsea made headlines for comparing herself to Megan Fox. Hair Loss 101 HAIR pro Samantha Cusick has revealed everything you need to know about hair loss. Why Does Hair Loss Happen? Hair loss can be influenced by so many factors, from genetics and hormone changes to lifestyle choices. Stress, diet, and even hair care habits can all impact hair strength. It's perfectly normal to lose some hair each day, but sometimes the body can shed more than usual, responding to things like hormonal shifts or even life stressors. Why It Happens More This Time of Year Have you ever noticed your hair seems to shed more in autumn? That's seasonal shedding! During summer, we hold onto extra hair to protect our scalp from the sun. As the weather cools, it's like our body recalibrates and lets go of those extra strands. Dry, cooler air can also make hair more brittle, making it easier to lose a little extra volume during these months. Hacks and Affordable Buys to Treat Hair loss The great news? You don't need to spend a fortune on pricey treatments to support your hair. Try daily scalp massages—they're so simple but really help boost blood flow to the follicles. Castor oil is another fantastic, budget-friendly option that's rich in nutrients to strengthen your strands. Adding a bit more protein to your diet and a biotin supplement can also work wonders for overall hair health. Products to Avoid Steer clear of products with high levels of alcohol, sulphates, and parabens - they can be drying and damage hair over time. Heat styling and chemical treatments can also cause breakage, so try to use them sparingly. Instead, look for gentle, hydrating formulas to support your scalp and keep hair healthier through the seasons. 4 Jimmy paid $11k for the procedure Credit: Instagram 4 He is pictured on the day of the op Credit: Instagram

Eve Jobs and Harry Charles' wedding preparations in full swing ahead of huge event
Team GB Olympic champ Harry Charles and American model Eve Jobs are set to swap vows in front of family, friends and even a failed American President candidate in one of the most lavish weddings of 2025 This weekend, the UK will play host to one of the most lavish weddings in the 2025 society calendar as Harry Charles and Eve Jobs become husband and wife. A List stars have already jetted to the Cotswolds where the lavish event is due to take place. With the groom reportedly worth as much as $2.5 million (£1.8 million) and the bride worth a reported $2 million (£1.5 million) the pair can afford to host a lavish party. However, the fact that Eve's mum is reportedly worth over $14 billion (£10.4 billion), it may be less of a surprise that the nuptials are set to cost several million. The couple have been an item for almost three years and have been engaged for less than a year. However, their romance has been clear for all to see as they have shared cute snaps of themselves on social media where they have openly declared their love - and they will become husband and wife on Saturday 26 July 2025. As the pair prepare to swap vows and begin their happy future together, photos have emerged of their wedding venue and church in the UK. Ariel shots of the St Michael & All Angels Church in Great Tew, Oxfordshire, show huge flower displays at the entrance of the almost 1,000 year old place of worship. The church was originally built in 1170 - and restored in 1827 by Thomas Rickman and stands proudly among the trees and green grass of the English countryside. Further snaps have shown huge tents and structures placed - with a red carpet stretching through the countryside. Eve is the youngest child of the late Apple business founder Steve Jobs and his businesswoman wife Laurene Powell. She has an older brother named Reed, 33, sister Erin, 29, and a 47-year-old half-sister named Lisa Brennan-Jobs. Eve's father died in October 2011 at the age of 56 after a battle against cancer. He had an estimated wealth of $7 billion (£5.2 billion) at the time of his death. Eve is a fashion model by profession and a keen equestrian. Her love for horses led to her meeting British Olympic show jumping competitor Harry Charles, 26 - who competed in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games where he won gold in team jumping. He achieved the impressive feat with his arm strapped up having broken it four weeks before the games. The pair reportedly began dating in September 2022 - and Harry popped the question soon after winning gold at the 2024 Olympics. The happy couple have reportedly spared no expense for the event - splashing a reported $6.7 million (£5 million) on their big day. The pair have reportedly taken over the charming town of Witney and will host their wedding at Estelle Manor. Pre wedding celebrations reportedly took place in the nearby Soho Famhouse - with VIPs among those attending the celebrations. Celebs and high powered politicians are among those said to be jetting to the British countryside to watch the model and show jumping hunk say "I do". Failed American Presidential candidate Kamala Harris and music legend Bruce Springsteen are just two of the big names tipped to attend the ceremony. Estelle Manor is described as "Oxfordshire's most exclusive hotel" - helping the couple build a luxurious feel to their celebrations. The hotel has impressive amenities including a 25m pool, two paddle courts, and over 60 acres of land. The Grade II listed building boasts 108 bedrooms, 4 restaurants, and a spa - and it's real name is Eynsham Hall. Built in 1908, the country home initially hosted hunting parties - but was used as a maternity hospital rest and relaxation centre during World War II before becoming a police training centre and then, ultimately, being converted into a hotel. Ahead of their wedding, Eve enjoyed a sun-soaked hen do - heading to a luxury hotel on a sun soaked beach with close family and friends. She shared highlights from her fun-feulled trip last month, showing her cavorting around in a little white dress with a wedding veil and splashing in the sea with a lilo with the word "Bride" written on it. While it is unclear if Eve's proud mum, Laurene, is footing the wedding bill, she has previously suggested her children won't inherit much of her $14 billion fortune. She previously told the New York Times: "I inherited my wealth from my husband, who didn't care about the accumulation of wealth. "I'm not interested in legacy wealth building, and my children know that... Steve wasn't interested in that. If I live long enough, it ends with me." Steve and Laurene were married in 1991 and stayed together until his death in 2011. He died following a long fight against pancreatic cancer - which resulted in respiratory arrest. Steve was previously in a relationship with American memoirist and painter Chrisann Brennan, 70, with whom the Apple founder shared his first daughter, Lisa.
