VP Sara Duterte condoles with families of OFWs killed in Red Sea attack

Filipino Times3 days ago
Vice President Sara Duterte on Friday extended her condolences to the families of three Filipino crew members reportedly killed in a Houthi rebel attack on a commercial ship in the Red Sea.
In a video message, Duterte expressed grief and solidarity with the victims' loved ones.
'I, along with the entire Office of the Vice President, extend our condolences to the families of our three OFW seafarers who died aboard the MV Eternity C,' she said.
Duterte also called for justice and prayed for the safety of the remaining crew members.
'We pray for justice for the three of them, as well as for the safety of their fellow crew members.'
The Liberia-flagged, Greek-managed vessel MV Eternity C was struck during a missile attack by the Iran-backed Houthi group on Monday, July 7, sustaining engine damage. It carried 22 crew members, including 21 Filipinos and one Russian.
According to Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Cacdac, eight Filipino crew members have so far been rescued, but 13 remain missing. Up to four deaths are being verified, with the Department of Foreign Affairs earlier stating that at least two Filipinos were 'most likely' killed.

Blast kills five children who were playing soccer in Yemen

Five children in southwestern Yemen died after an explosive device detonated in a residential area where they were playing soccer, rights groups and eye witnesses said on Saturday. The circumstances surrounding their deaths on Friday night in the Al Hashmah subdistrict of Taiz province remain unclear. However, the Yemen Center for Human Rights and another rights group called Eye of Humanity along with Houthi-controlled Al Masirah TV said an artillery shell was fired by militias backed by the Islah party, which is allied to the internationally recognised government in south Yemen. A spokesperson for the United Nations children's agency Unicef told The Associated Press that they are aware of reports about the incident but can't verify the facts at the moment. Two local residents who were eyewitnesses, Ahmed al-Sharee and Khaled al-Areki, told the AP that the children were playing soccer when the explosion happened. At least three people with minor to moderate injuries were also taken to the hospital, according to the eyewitnesses. Meanwhile, Mahmoud Al Mansi, another eyewitness, said the explosive was directed from an area where forces allied with the Islah party were present. The Yemen Center for Human Rights condemned the incident in a report that included graphic photos of the children's torn bodies. Citing healthcare sources at Al-Rafai Hospital, where the victims arrived unresponsive, the group said they died from shrapnel injuries. Two of the children were 12 years old, while two others were 14 years old, according to the group. The age of the fifth child is unknown. Taiz city, the capital of the province of the same name, has been a battleground, pitting the Iran-backed Houthi militias and other militias backed by the Islah party against each other and other factions in Yemen's civil war. The city was under Houthi blockade since 2016, restricting the freedom of movement and flow of essential goods to residents, but Houthis recently opened key roads. Associated Press

11 Magic Seas crew members safely return home after Red Sea attack

Eleven Filipino seafarers who survived the Houthi attack on the MV Magic Seas have safely arrived in Manila on Saturday night. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) reported that the returning crew members were warmly welcomed by government representatives at NAIA Terminal 3. Earlier, six other crew members had also returned to the Philippines on Friday evening—three officers arriving at NAIA Terminal 1 and the rest at Clark International Airport. The DMW assured that all returning crew will receive comprehensive reintegration support from the government, as directed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., to ensure their smooth return to family life and community. Cayetano pushes for house arrest over ICC Detention for Duterte: 'Compassion Should Apply to All'

Senator Alan Peter Cayetano urged the Philippine government to appeal to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for a house arrest arrangement for former President Rodrigo Duterte instead of full detention while awaiting trial. In an interview with Boy Abunda posted on July 13, 2025, Cayetano said this is not a call for Duterte's release, but for a more humane form of custody—possibly inside the Philippine Embassy in The Hague—in accordance with both constitutional rights and international human rights standards. He emphasized that compassion should not be reserved for allies, saying, 'Even if you don't agree with someone, compassion should still apply.' Cayetano explained that Duterte's legal team had already filed for interim release, a provision allowed under ICC rules and seen in past cases like a Congolese rebel accused of crimes against humanity. The senator also cited Philippine examples such as the special detention of Leila de Lima and Senator Trillanes in military camps. 'Justice must be principled, not cruel,' Cayetano said, warning against a mindset of vengeance. He ended by stressing the importance of calm and compassion as the ICC process continues.
