New stars appear in NBA, MLB
Good morning! Please wish my father a happy birthday today. Happy birthday, Dad.
Today we focus on two drafts, one that happened last night and one set to occur in just three weeks. Let's start with last night's first round of the NBA Draft, where saw a new star born and a bunch of other question marks take shape:
The biggest flop? My New Orleans Pelicans, already in dire straits, trading next year's first-round pick unprotected to Atlanta in order to trade up for Maryland's Derik Queen at No. 13. That pick could be No. 1 next year, and they let it go for the No. 13 pick in this year's draft. Unreal stuff.
See every pick here. Let's hope we see some of these guys in Las Vegas at summer league.
Misiorowski outshines Skenes
In one of the most anticipated pitching matchups of the MLB season, Brewers rookie Jacob Misiorowski dazzled while Pirates ace Paul Skenes faltered in a 4-2 Milwaukee win. Misiorowski struck out eight in five scoreless innings, while Skenes allowed all four runs in just four innings of work. In 16 innings pitched this year, Misiorowski has 19 strikeouts to just seven walks and two earned runs. Lord. Eno Sarris broke down why Misiorowski is so hard to hit.

Oilers jettison Kane
Edmonton traded Evander Kane to Vancouver for a 2025 fourth-round pick, both teams announced yesterday, in what could set off a flurry of offseason moves for the Stanley Cup runners up. In truth, Edmonton desperately needed to get off Kane's contract and, somehow, retained none of Kane's salary in this deal. For that, the Oilers get high marks in our trade grades.

We've talked tangentially about how much baseball's minor-league development system, paired with collegiate NIL funds, has altered how young players make career choices. What was once an easier decision — opting for the minors right out of high school — is now more balanced, with fewer minor-league franchises to play for and the opportunity to make legit money in college.
It's easy to see the corresponding effect in the majors. Yesterday, we wrote about Chase Burns' debut in Cincinnati, which came a little over a year after he was pitching at Wake Forest. Same goes for his college teammate Rhett Lowder, Skenes, Dylan Crews, Jac Caglianone, Nick Kurtz and so on.
So … who's next? Keith Law, who's written plenty on this overall theme, picked a few names from next month's MLB Draft class that could earn a major-league roster spot sooner than you think. Two that stood out to me:

Two titans of this competition finally clash, though both are set to advance to the knockout rounds no matter the result. It should be a fantastic match, and playing on a June afternoon in Orlando will make it even harder on the players. Tune in.

New York has had an abysmal stretch, but I'm most curious about Atlanta, which has the talent makeup of a title contender but has played to a frustrating standstill just below .500. Baseball season is long, but why does it already feel over for the Braves?

Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz placed on paid leave due to MLB investigation reportedly related to gambling
Luis Ortiz was supposed to start Thursday's game against the Cubs. (Photo by Frank Jansky/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz was placed on leave Thursday amid an MLB investigation, the team announced. The team did not provide details on the investigation, saying it was "not permitted to comment further at this time." The investigation is believed to be related to gambling, multiple sources told Zack Meisel and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Advertisement Ortiz, 26, will go on paid leave through the All-Star break, per Meisel. The news comes just hours before Ortiz was expected to take the mound against the Chicago Cubs. With Ortiz on leave, the Guardians will turn to Joey Cantillo to start Thursday's game. After a promising season in 2024, in which Ortiz posted a 3.32 ERA over 37 appearances with the Pittsburgh Pirates, he was traded to the Guardians in December. He opened the season in Cleveland's rotation and has a 4.36 ERA over 88 2/3 innings. In 16 starts, Ortiz has a 4-9 record. His nine losses lead the American League. If gambling is at the center of the investigation, Ortiz could face a wide range of consequences from the league. MLB banned former infielder Tucupita Marcano for life in 2024 after it was determined he bet on his own team while he was injured. Four other players received one-year bans after it was determined they bet on baseball, though not on their own teams. Those four players were reinstated from their suspensions in June. Advertisement MLB players are not allowed to gamble on baseball or softball at any level, though can gamble on other sports. The news comes in the midst of a disappointing season for the Guardians. After entering the year with playoff aspirations, the team has a 40-44 record and sits in third place in the American League Central. Cleveland is on a six-game losing streak entering Thursday.

Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz placed on paid leave amid MLB investigation
Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz was placed on non-disciplinary paid leave just hours before he was expected to take the mound against the Chicago Cubs on Thursday, MLB announced. The nature of the league's investigation was not immediately known. Ortiz, in his first season with the Guardians, will remain on paid leave through the end of the All-Star break due to an MLB investigation, the league said, adding that it will not comment further until their probe is complete. The Guardians also released a statement following MLB's announcement. "The Guardians have been notified by Major League Baseball that Luis Ortiz has been placed on leave per an agreement with the Players Association due to an ongoing league investigation. "The Guardians are not permitted to comment further at this time, and will respect the league's confidential investigative process." The 26-year-old right-handed pitcher was acquired by Cleveland in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates that also included Michael Kennedy and Josh Hartle in exchange for Spencer Horwitz. In 16 starts with the Guardians, Ortiz is 4-9 with a 4.36 ERA and 96 strikeouts. His losses are tied for the most in the American League currently. After getting scratched from Thursday's lineup, Cleveland called up left-hander Joey Cantillo, who is 1-0 with one save and a 3.81 ERA in 21 appearances this season. Sharks claim veteran defenseman Nick Leddy off waivers from Blues
The San Jose Sharks claimed St. Louis Blues defenseman Nick Leddy on waivers Thursday, per The Athletic's Chris Johnston, gaining an experienced defenseman and providing salary-cap relief to the Blues on a player who had been buried on the depth chart. Leddy has one season left on a four-year, $16 million contract ($4 million average annual value). The Blues are now off the hook for Leddy's $3 million salary and $4 million cap hit in 2025-26. Advertisement The 34-year-old was drafted by the Minnesota Wild at No. 16 in 2009. His rights were traded to the Chicago Blackhawks, with whom he won a Stanley Cup in 2013. He played seven seasons for the New York Islanders after that, making two trips to the Stanley Cup playoffs' semifinal round. He then played part of one season for the Detroit Red Wings before being traded to the Blues. Overall, Leddy has played 1,042 regular-season games in the NHL. The 6-foot, 205-pound defenseman has 75 goals and 416 points in the regular season. He's played 137 postseason games and has eight goals and 39 points. Leddy played in just 31 games with the Blues last season because of an undisclosed injury. St. Louis traded for Logan Mailloux on Tuesday, effectively replacing him on the roster for 2025-26. This story will be updated.
