IND vs ENG Women's 1st T20I: Women in Blue in focus in English conditions
India women will be keen to internalise the conditions and character of venues in England ahead of next year's World Cup here during the five-match T20I series against the host, beginning with the opening game at Trent Bridge on Saturday (June 28, 2025).
The ICC showpiece is almost a year away, but this series is a perfect stepping stone after India's disappointing group-stage exit from last year's edition.
The return of explosive opener Shafali Verma apart, India has added some new names, such as Kranti Goud, Shree Charani and Sayali Satghare, into the squad.
Shafali, in all likelihood, will be paired with Smriti Mandhana at the pole position. This is India's first T20 assignment of the year, and the return of Sneh Rana and Amanjot Kaur will be keenly watched.
India will miss the experience of injured pacers Renuka Singh and Pooja Vastrakar. The visitor lost both its practice matches — a 50-over and a T20 game — to the ECB Development Squad, and will be up against a formidable team led by the talismanic Nat Sciver-Brunt.
The host has several experienced stars in its ranks, such as Amy Jones, Tammy Beaumont, Danny Wyatt-Hodge and Sophie Ecclestone. Along with them, England will also field talented youngsters like Issy Wong, Alice Capsey and Sophia Dunkley.
In that context, India will require its premier batters, including Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti, Shafali, Jemimah Rodrigues and Richa Ghosh to be in their groove.
Harmanpreet might also have regained her confidence after guiding Mumbai Indians to its second WPL title. However, India will welcome some more runs from its lower-order to shore up the team in critical moments.
Teams
England: Nat Sciver-Brunt (Capt.), Em Arlott, Tammy Beaumont (wk), Lauren Bell, Alice Capsey, Charlie Dean, Sophia Dunkley, Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Filer, Amy Jones (wk), Paige Scholfield, Linsey Smith, Danni Wyatt-Hodge, Issy Wong.
India: Harmanpreet Kaur (Capt.), Smriti Mandhana (Vice-capt.), Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Richa Ghosh (wk), Yastika Bhatia (wk), Harleen Deol, Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana, Shree Charani, Shuchi Upadhyay, Amanjot Kaur, Arundhati Reddy, Kranti Gaud, Sayali Satghare.
Match starts at 7 p.m. IST.

Mandhana, Shree Charani sizzle as India crush England in 1st T20I
STAND-IN captain Smriti Mandhana hit a scintillating century (112 off 62 balls) while left-arm spinner N Shree Charani, with figures of 4/12, made a dream debut as India Women crushed England Women by 97 runs in the opening T20I at Nottingham on Saturday. Mandhana's maiden century in T20 internationals guided India to 210/5, India's second-highest total in T20Is, after being asked to bat first. The 28-year-old's 112 was also the highest individual score for an Indian in WT20Is. In reply, the hosts, despite Nat Sciver-Brunt's 42-ball 66, lost wickets at regular intervals and were eventually bowled out for 113 in 14.5 overs. Shree Charani was the destructor-in-chief with the ball as she accounted for four wickets, including the big wicket of Sciver-Brunt. Mandhana, who was deservedly adjudged the Player of the Match, was in her element as she tore apart the England bowling attack. The left-handed batter punished the likes of Em Arlott, Linsey Smith and Sophie Ecclestone and reached the three-figure mark in 51 balls. The Mumbai-born batter's innings included as many as 15 fours and three sixes. Mandhana's splendid innings finally came to an end in the final over. This was incidentally England's heaviest defeat in this format. Brief scores: India 210/5 in 20 ovs (Mandhana 112, Harleen 43; Bell 3/27) bt England 113 in 14.5 ovs (Sciver-Brunt 66; Shree Charani 4/12) by 97 runs.

Paul Pogba Signs For Monaco, Hoping To Revive Career
Paul Pogba has signed a two-year deal with Ligue 1 side Monaco to return to football after a near two-year absence, the club announced on Saturday. The 2018 World Cup winner has made only 12 appearances across the last three seasons due to injuries, an 18-month doping ban and an extortion case in which he was the victim. Pogba failed a drugs test in August 2023 after a match for Juventus and has been free to return to football since March, although his contract at the Italian giants had been terminated last year. The midfielder will now play club football in Ligue 1 for the first time in his professional career. "I am determined to get back on the pitch, mentally ready, physically ready, it's just a matter of time," the 32-year-old told French television last weekend. Pogba played in the Le Havre youth team before signing for Manchester United in 2009. He made only a handful of first-team appearances for the three-time European champions before signing for Juventus in 2012. Pogba won four consecutive Serie A titles in Turin before rejoining United for a then-world record 105 million euros ($123 million). He moved back to Juventus three years ago but struggled with a series of injuries. In 2024, his brother Mathias was sentenced to three years in prison, with two years suspended, for his role in a plot to extort 13 million euros from Pogba in 2022. Pogba has scored 11 goals in 91 appearances for the France national team, playing a starring role and scoring in their World Cup final victory over Croatia seven years ago. His new club Monaco will play in the Champions League next season after finishing third in Ligue 1 last term.
