A Scientist Says Humans Will Reach The Singularity Within 20 Years
Here's what you'll learn when you read this story: Futurists have long debated the arrival of the singularity, when human and artificial intelligence will merge, a concept borrowed from the world of quantum physics. American computer scientist and futurist Ray Kurzweil has long argued that the singularity would likely occur around the middle of the 21st century, and with the rise of AI, his predictions are gaining more his book, The Singularity is Nearer, Kurzweil doubles down on those predictions and details how humanity's intelligence will increase a millionfold via nanobots (among other things). You don't exactly become a world-renowned futurist by making safe predictions. And while some of these past predictions haven't exactly come to pass (Back to the Future Part II, specifically), these ideas help expand our thoughts on what exactly the future might look like. And no one makes futuristic predictions quite like Ray Kurzweil. An American computer scientist-turned-futurist, Kurzweil has long believed that humanity is headed toward what's known as 'the singularity,' when man and machine merge. In 1999, Kurzweil theorized that artificial general intelligence would be achieved once humanity could achieve a technology capable of a trillion calculations per second, which he pegged to occur in 2029. Experts at the time scoffed at the idea, figuring it'd be at least a century or more, but with Kurzweil's timeline only a few years off—and talk of AGI spreading—that decades-old prediction is beginning to loom large. Astronauts from India, Poland, and Hungary in Over Four Decades Launch to ISS
Four private astronauts have successfully reached orbit aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft. The mission, known as Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4), launched in the early hours of Wednesday from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This all-private astronaut mission is the fourth of its kind to the International Space Station (ISS), showcasing how space travel is becoming more global and commercially driven. On board the mission are: Peggy Whitson, a veteran NASA astronaut and now Axiom Space's director of human spaceflight, serving as mission commander. Shubhanshu Shukla, representing India's space agency ISRO, flying as pilot. Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski, a project astronaut from the European Space Agency (ESA) representing Poland. Tibor Kapu, part of Hungary's HUNOR astronaut program. This launch marks the first time in over four decades that astronauts from India, Poland, and Hungary have traveled to space. NASA's Acting Administrator Janet Petro congratulated Axiom Space and SpaceX, calling the mission "a powerful example of American leadership bringing nations together in pursuit of science, discovery, and opportunity." She also noted that the launch follows through on a commitment made between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to send an Indian astronaut to the ISS. NASA and ISRO are jointly conducting five science investigations and two in-orbit educational and technology experiments as part of this mission. The collaboration highlights the growing international cooperation in space exploration. The Dragon spacecraft is expected to dock with the ISS at around 7 a.m. on Thursday, June 26. Live coverage begins at 5 a.m. on NASA+. Once aboard, the visiting crew will be welcomed by Expedition 73 members, including astronauts from the U.S., Japan, and Russia. During their two-week stay, the Ax-4 crew will conduct scientific research in microgravity, engage in educational outreach, and support commercial experiments. This mission reflects NASA's broader vision of building a strong low-Earth orbit economy, where the agency works alongside private industry. By shifting some space operations to commercial partners, NASA is able to focus more on deep space goals, including the Artemis missions to the Moon and eventually to Mars.

Masked NIH Employees Storm Out Of Meeting After Director Bhattacharya Questions Agency's Role In COVID-19 Origins
Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), sparked a mass walkout of NIH employees after suggesting that COVID-19 may have originated from a Wuhan lab and that NIH helped fund it. During a staff town hall meeting on Monday, Bhattacharya told NIH employees, 'It's possible that the pandemic was caused by research conducted by human beings, and it's also possible that the NIH partly sponsored that research.' That comment prompted dozens of NIH employees to walk out of the meeting. NEW: NIH Director @DrJBhattacharya sparks mass walkout from NIH employees after suggesting COVID-19 may have originated from the Wuhan lab — and that NIH helped fund it."It's possible that the pandemic was caused by research conducted by human beings, and it's also possible… — KanekoaTheGreat (@KanekoaTheGreat) May 20, 2025 As the NIH employees, some wearing masks, stormed out of the meeting, Bhattacharya called after them, 'Nice to have free speech. You're welcome, you guys.' Bhattacharya told the remaining employees, 'If it's true that we sponsored research that caused the pandemic — and if you look at polls of the American people, that's what most people believe, and I've looked at the scientific evidence and I believe it — [then] what we have to do is make sure that we don't engage in research that is any risk…to human populations.' The U.S. has faced growing scrutiny for the NIH's participation in controversial virus manipulation experiments at the Wuhan Institute of Virology where the FBI and CIA both believe the COVID-19 virus originated. As the new director of NIH, Bhattacharya has also faced a $2.7 billion cut in funding from the federal government as well as the layoffs of more than 1,200 staff members. Bhattacharya has argued that the cuts are necessary since, 'There's been a line of research supported by the NIH that I don't actually fundamentally believe is scientific and that is ideological in nature.' The new NIH director became well known during the pandemic for his support of the Great Barrington Declaration, which called for ending lockdowns for all but the most vulnerable.
