‘This shows your seriousness': Boss's scathing reply to unpaid intern's leave request for emergency goes viral

A post recently surfaced on Reddit that reignited discussions about workplace toxicity , especially concerning the treatment of interns. A user shared a disturbing incident involving a friend who was serving as an unpaid intern under an Indian manager. The friend, despite receiving no monetary compensation, was reportedly burdened with excessive duties and held to unrealistic expectations. The intern requested a day off due to a family emergency, but instead of empathy, she was Reddit user attached a screenshot of the WhatsApp conversation between the intern and her superior to substantiate the claim. In the message, the intern expressed regret for the late notice and informed her manager that she wouldn't be able to report to work that day due to both of her parents being severely unwell and confined to bed rest. She also reassured the manager that she would deliver her pending work—the edited runway videos—later that the manager's response showed little understanding. Instead of acknowledging the gravity of the situation, he responded curtly, implying that the intern's sudden leave just days before a significant event reflected poorly on her sense of commitment. He noted that her absence demonstrated a lack of seriousness, leaving the intern feeling humiliated for prioritizing a family emergency over her unpaid professional obligations."When you are interning somewhere, there is a responsibility too...3 days before a big event, you go your shows seriousness towards your work," read his post ignited a storm of reactions across Reddit. Users were quick to criticize the manager's unempathetic attitude and the broader culture of exploitative internships . Many pointed out that unpaid interns should not be given mission-critical tasks to begin with. Several users also highlighted that expecting unwavering dedication from interns while refusing to treat them as valued contributors reflects deep flaws in management user stressed that if the absence of an intern is enough to derail major operations, then the organization has structural issues and shouldn't be relying so heavily on unpaid labor. Another user expressed frustration over the normalized expectation that interns should forgo personal emergencies in order to prove their dedication. They added that even the harshest managers typically permit emergency leaves—this case stood out for its unusually harsh comments also emphasized that needing to take care of one's family during a crisis is entirely justified, regardless of employment status. They encouraged workers—interns and employees alike—to take leave without guilt when it comes to family emergencies. The consensus was clear: when an organization lacks backup planning and penalizes interns for having a personal life, the fault lies squarely with the employer, not the intern.

Unpaid intern denied leave to care for sick parents; Reddit slams ‘exploitative' work culture

A recent Reddit post has sparked intense debate about toxic work culture and the exploitation of unpaid interns. The post included a screenshot of a WhatsApp conversation between a young intern and her manager, which many online have described as insensitive and tone-deaf. According to the Reddit user who shared the incident, their friend was doing an unpaid internship but was being treated like a full-time employee, without any of the respect or compensation. 'He expects seriousness from his interns even though he doesn't treat them seriously,' the user wrote. The screenshot shows the intern informing her boss that she won't be able to attend work due to a family emergency. 'Sir Im really sorry for the short notice, I won't be able to come in today. I have an emergency situation at home since my parents are really sick and on bedrest rn so I need to stay back,' she wrote to him. She even assured him she'd continue her tasks from home, saying, 'I'll send you the morphed runway videos by today.' But the manager's reply left many stunned. 'When u are interning somewhere there is a responsibility too…3 days before a big event u gone missing…anyways ur choice…this shows seriousness towards ur work,' he responded, appearing to guilt-trip the intern rather than show concern. The intern apologised again, clarifying that it was an unavoidable situation and promised to be back the next day: 'I know this week is important for the event. I'll be there tomorrow, right on time.' One user wrote, 'If the place falls apart by an intern taking a day off, they really shouldn't be keeping interns!' Another person said, 'Whether you are an intern or an employee, it doesn't matter. If you need leaves for family, take them without guilt and without being sorry… If your company lacks contingency measures in such emergency situations, it is their fault, not yours!' Some went further, calling out the system that allows unpaid internships to thrive. 'Stop doing unpaid internships. It is a reflection of their work culture,' one user said. Another Redditor wrote, 'If the intern is so critical for the company, the company should pay the intern like it pays the CEO.'

Boss Attacks Unpaid Intern For Asking A Day Off To Nurse Sick Parents, Sparks Debate

Last Updated: A Reddit user shared a post about their friend alleging that she was denied emergency leave while working as an unpaid intern. A disturbing incident has come to light where a boss's decision to deny an unpaid intern's request for emergency leave has sparked widespread outrage about workplace norms and the treatment of interns. A Reddit user shared a post about their friend alleging that she was denied emergency leave while working as an unpaid intern at an organisation. Titled 'Boss won't allow my friend to take emergency leave as an unpaid intern," the post included a screenshot of the WhatsApp conversation between the intern and her boss. The caption read, 'My friend is doing an unpaid internship, but her boss gives her unlimited responsibility. He expects seriousness from his interns even though he doesn't treat them seriously." The first text in the screenshot, written by the intern, read, 'Sir I'm really sorry for the short notice, I won't be able to come in today. I have an emergency situation at home since my parents are really sick and on bedrest. So I need to stay back. I am really sorry for the sudden absence but it wont happen again. I'll send you the morphed runway videos by today." Here's How Fellow Redditors Reacted The internet was quick to react to the post. One user wrote, 'Whether you are an intern or an employee, it doesn't matter. If you need leave for your family, take it without guilt and without being sorry. Work won't stop, but you will end up losing time with your family. If your company lacks contingency measures in such emergencies, it's their fault, not yours." Another added, 'If the place falls apart because of an intern taking a day off, they really shouldn't be keeping interns!" A third commented, 'Stop doing unpaid internships. It is a reflection of their work culture. A lot of companies simply hire interns to replace their full time employees." 'Tell your friend to respond with 'You're right. Prioritizing my parents' health over an unpaid internship exposes my shocking lack of commitment. Next time, I'll remind them to get sick on a weekend or during a major holiday," remarked a user.
