Two-goal hero Cole Palmer says Chelsea silenced doubters with Club World Cup win
Victory, which landed the Blues a jackpot in excess of £90million, was also a tactical triumph for manager Enzo Maresca.
Asked about how the team is developing under the Italian, Palmer told DAZN: 'He's building something special, something important with a young team.
'Everyone's talked a lot of s*** about us all season, but I feel like we're going in the right direction.'
Reflecting on the game, Palmer added: 'Obviously it's a great feeling, even better because everyone doubted us before the game. We knew that and to go out there and put a fight on like we did against a great team, yes, it's good.
'The gaffer put a great gameplan out. Obviously he knew where the space was going to be and he tried to free me up as much as possible, and I just had to repay him and score some goals.'
Palmer – whose double and assist all came within the space of 21 first-half minutes – was also the decisive player as Chelsea beat Real Betis in the Europa Conference League final in May.
Maresca said: 'These are the games where we expect Cole to appear – big games and big moments – and once again he showed how good he is.'
The tournament itself has been controversial and derided in many quarters but Maresca is in no doubt of the prestige it will bring the club.
As well as the significant prize money, Chelsea will be entitled to wear a badge on their shirts confirming their status as world champions for the next four years.
Maresca said: 'I think it will become as important as the Champions League and we value it as much as winning the Champions League.
'It has been the (best) effort from the team and all the players. I am very happy, especially for them because they deserve the moment.
'Had you told me we were going to win 3-0 in the first half I wouldn't have expected that but we knew we were going to put up a fight and we knew our squad is really competitive against talented teams.'
PSG's misery was complete five minutes from time when Joao Neves was sent off for pulling Marc Cucurella's hair.
Frustration was also evident as scuffles broke out after the final whistle.
PSG manager Luis Enrique became involved in one incident that ended with Pedro on the ground.
Enrique said: 'I saw Maresca had pushed others (away) and we had to separate all the players.
'This is a situation we must all avoid. My intention is that I wanted to separate the footballers so the situation didn't become worse.'

Ruben Amorim favourite 'says yes' to Juventus after Man Utd transfer links
Sporting midfielder Morten Hjulmand has turned down interest from Manchester United and Tottenham to agree personal terms with Juventus, according to reports in Italy. Hjulmand joined Sporting from Lecce in 2023 and quickly established himself as a linchpin of the side, going on to make 96 appearances in all competitions for the club over the last two seasons. Last term, Hjulmand was a near ever-present as Sporting won a domestic double and the Dane earned himself a place in the Primeira Liga Team of the Season for a second time in as many years with his outstanding performances across the campaign. But speculation has been mounting that Hjulmand may well have played his last match for the Portuguese champions, with Manchester United, Tottenham and Juve all known to be admirers. United have been monitoring Hjulmand's progress for well over a year and Ruben Amorim's departure from Sporting to take over the reins at Old Trafford has only intensified rumours of a possible reunion in the north west. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. However, Juventus have asserted themselves as the overwhelming favourites to capture Hjulmand this summer and an agreement over his proposed salary in Turin, according to Corriere dello Sport. It's believed Hjlumand has unequivocally 'said yes' to Juve, with the midfielder's camp actively pushing to secure a return to Italian football in recent days. The report adds that Hjlumand has been placed at the top of Juve's wishlist in central midfield – above Spurs' Yves Bissouma and Wolves' Andre – and head coach Igor Tudor has personally endorsed the move. While Hjlumand has a hefty €80million (£69m) release clause in Lisbon, it's claimed Sporting could be prepared to do business for a fee of between €50-60m (£43-52m) for the sought-after Denmark international. Hjlumand's current contract at the Jose Alvalade Stadium runs through to June 2028. Hjlumand has remained tight-lipped on rumours of an impending move to Juventus, but had previously talked up a move to the Premier League. 'I'd say that is a place I could see myself going to in the future,' he told Tipsbladet last year. 'Whether it's a dream, I don't know. But it is a goal for me to play in the Premier League one day.' Juve have already completed permanent deals for Michele Di Gregorio, Pierre Kalulu, Lloyd Kelly and Nicolas Gonzalez this summer and the club are intent on further strengthening their attack before the transfer deadline. The Old Lady have been in discussions to sign Jadon Sancho for some time and fellow Manchester United outcast Marcus Rashford also finds himself the club's shortlist of potential targets. It's understood a deal worth in the region of £13m is now close between United and Juve for Sancho. Rashford, meanwhile, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa, is valued at around £40m by the Red Devils. Earlier this month, it was confirmed that new signing, Matheus Cunha, had taken over the iconic No.10 shirt from Rashford – yet another indication that the England forward's days in Manchester are numbered. Sancho has just 12 months remaining on his current contract with United, while Rashford is tied into a deal at Old Trafford until 2028. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Liverpool know what they must do to sign Hugo Ekitike after transfer statement
Liverpool are signalled their desire to bid for Hugo Ekitike, who has an £85m release clause at Frankfurt, with the German club willing to offload their top talent at the right time Liverpool will need to meet Hugo Ekitike's £85million release clause if they want to strike a deal. But Frankfurt chief sporting director Markus Krosche has already admitted that the club would be willing to sell their top stars if they outgrew their environment in Germany. The Frenchman has become the team's leading light, scoring more than 20 times last term as they qualified for the Champions League. However that has led to mounting interest in Ekitike, who is now on the radars of Liverpool and Newcastle. The Magpies have already seen a £70million bid for the 23-year-old turned down by Frankfurt, who now have to deal with Liverpool's interest. They want his release clause met before they sanction Ekitike's departure - with the player favouring a switch to Anfield. It would be the second major name they've lost in a little over six months after Omar Marmoush, who was hugely effective in the final third, moved to Manchester City in January for £59m. Ekitike flourished and became the team's main man in attack after his exit. The Reds approached Frankfurt on Wednesday to register their interest, with reports an opening bid was rejected the day after. Krosche has confessed that the club are open to letting their top players seek pastures new. He told Sport1: "He's one of the most interesting strikers on the European market. Hugo has to decide that. I'm glad we have him. If he decides otherwise, that's our motto: If a player develops faster than us, we let him go." Liverpool are looking to further bolster their attacking options with Darwin Nunez expected to leave the club. They have also been over reliant on Mohamed Salah at times and want to help ease his burden with Ekitike among those on their radar. Newcastle are also keen. They have Alexander Isak spearheading their attack, although the Swede is also on Liverpool's shortlist. The Magpies though want Ekitike to compliment Isak in their forward line and believe the duo could play effectively together. The French forward has admitted he would like the chance to share the pitch with Marmoush again, which would involve him moving to England. He said last season: "I think he did everything he needed to do here. I'm happy to see him playing in England now. I try to watch his games whenever I can, especially when he's playing. I think we shared some great moments together, and I hope we can play together again or face each other soon." Liverpool have already spent north of £200m this summer, which included them breaking the British-transfer record to land Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. They've also signed Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Chelsea make £80m England star top transfer target as spending continue
Chelsea are looking to spend big again this summer as they identify Aston Villa and England star Morgan Rogers as their top transfer target. The Blues have already made a string of big signings this summer, with Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens and Estevao all arriving. Boosted by their money-spinning Club World Cup triumph, Chelsea are not finished in the transfer market just yet and are eyeing up a move for Rogers. The Sun report that the 22-year-old is now top of the shopping list at Stamford Bridge, although he will be an expensive purchase if they can pull it off. Villa do not want to let the midfielder go and he has been valued at a huge £80m, reflecting his importance to Unai Emery's side. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. However, the Villains are in a perilous situation when it comes to Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and are expected to make sales this summer. They do not want Rogers to be one of the outgoings, but if a massive bid comes in then they will have to consider it. Other Villa stars including Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Martinez, Jacob Ramsey and Leon Bailey have all been linked with exits this summer, but deals are yet to be done. Emery also wants to bring in signings this summer, with the only new arrivals so far being teenagers Yasin Ozcan and Zepiqueno Redmond from Kasimpasa and Feyenoord respectively, and veteran goalkeeper Marco Bizot from Brest. Villa are keen on bringing in a new striker and Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson is on their list of targets, given the Blues have brought in plenty of competition for the Senegal international over the summer. Having been Enzo Maresca's only real option up front for much of last season, the Blues now have Pedro and Delap, with Jackson seemingly slipping down the pecking order. Emery worked with the 24-year-old and would like to reunite with him at Villa Park if a deal can be done. Manchester United have also been credited with an interest in Jackson, who has scored 30 goals in his two seasons at Chelsea. A swap deal including Alejandro Garnacho has been mooted by The i paper, with the Argentina international on the chopping block at Old Trafford and looking for a move. There is interest in Garnacho from Italy and Saudi Arabia, but he reportedly wants to stay in the Premier League, making Chelsea one of the few viable options for the winger. More Trending The 21-year-old is one of a number of players Manchester United are trying to offload as they look to rebuild their squad under Ruben Amorim. Juventus are interested in taking both Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho off the Red Devils' hands, while Antony and Tyrell Malacia are also up for sale.
