
Two-timing these 2-wheelers: Why Karnataka must take a quick U-turn on bike taxi bans
Karnataka has banned bike taxi aggregators claiming private vehicles cannot indulge in commercial activities. The state's High Court in April and again this month, upheld the sarkari order declaring personal two-wheelers used for paid rides are illegal. These operators are plugging a crucial gap. Instead of punitive measures, the state must partner with them.
That would make them in sync with 12 other states and Union Territories that have already drafted clear policies based on the broad guidelines of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, that permits two wheelers to be contract carriages. Realising its potential, even the Centre since 2020, has been nudging states to lay down their ground rules. While Opposition ruled states like West Bengal have been the most progressive, offering on-tap licenses for its proliferation, others like Maharashtra have adapted a framework based on New Delhi's rulebook.
It's the state's job to provide infrastructure, transportation and public service deliveries. In Karnataka it has failed on all three. Bangalore is an urban quagmire. Even after a decade, the expansion of the Metro network has been abysmal. Taxpayers continue to bear the 53% cost escalation of just Phase II of Namma Metro. The delays have exacerbated traffic congestion in the city – 3rd most in the world as per Dutch location technology firm Tom Tom's 2024 Traffic Index -- as vehicular traffic have also galloped 56% in the same period.
Instead of further clogging the choked arteries of our city roads that operate on an average of 4x capacity, bike taxis leverage the existing infrastructure in 300 plus Indian cities to make travel affordable, accessible and convenient. 95% of our 200 million 2-wheelers ply the roads with a single user. Private operators like Ola, Rapido, Quick Ride, Jugnoo or Uber have stepped in to 'sweat' those bikes more efficiently in the world's largest two wheeler market.
It's a template borrowed from Asia and pockets of Africa and Latin America that have high population densities. In each of these markets, bike taxis have emerged as the primary choice of transport in metros and smaller centers. It's not just about absolute volumes. Often, they act as the crucial link between the first and last mile of public commute – the single biggest roadblock towards faster adoption of rapid urban transit systems. In cities like Chennai, Hyderabad, NCR or even Lucknow, metro adoptees hailing a bike taxi to start their journey from home to the nearest station or riding pillion once they come out of it to reach their final destinations has become the biggest use case. As Mumbai's metro roll out gathers steam, this trend will also play out in key junctions like Bandra Kurla Complex, where the station is in the middle of nowhere. In smaller cities, where options are even more limited and time bound, they are fast becoming the mainstay as work hours keep expanding while bus fleets aren't. Price wise, as the bridge between auto, taxis and buses, bike taxis have the perfect product market fit. Why else would 30-35% of a billion bike taxi rides from around the world originate from India?Being app first, these are safer (8 level checks from driver verification, route monitoring and even insurance covers) and more transparent than offline options. Women passengers find them far more safe as they are open and have enough emergency interventions. This alleviates the narrative of security. Karnataka can easily generate Rs 100 crores in GST revenues from fares. Add permit fees, aggregator license fees to the equation, the exchequer can earn a tidy sum.
In a state where a third of all posts in the administration are still vacant, bike taxis have managed to offer 6 lakh people their principal source of income every month. For many underemployed youths, it also acts as a supplementary means. A 2024 KPMG report 'Unlocking the potential of bike taxis in India,' suggests that most bike taxi drivers opt in to cover emergency expenses or run households. The move is especially baffling because of the policy inconsistency of the leadership that otherwise has been at the forefront of providing social security benefits to gig workers. Two-wheelers used for delivery services are allowed to operate freely under white number plates but those providing passenger transport using the same vehicles, operating under similar commercial intent are subjected to restrictions. Both are gig economy jobs, both involve commercial use of two-wheelers, and both are governed by the same Motor Vehicles Act.Much like neighboring Goa where vested interests of the local taxi mafia have created an inefficient and extortionist monopoly that has begun hurting its tourism-driven economy, in Karnataka too, local politicians and policy makers of the state, that fancies itself as the hub of innovation, are also sadly succumbing to rival motivations of auto-rickshaw unions that have even in the past had put a spoke in the wheels of progress. The state needs to decide if it wants to starve one vote bank to feed the other. Accordingly, it should immediately reverse their decision and accelerate a regulatory framework for business and innovation to thrive. Every single disruption faces turbulence as part of evolution. It's far more acute in the consumer internet fraternity as regulations are always playing catch up.But what's sauce for the goose should also be sauce for the gander.

In the second leg of his visit, PM Modi will pay an official visit to Trinidad and Tobago (T & T) from July 3-4. "I will meet President Christine Carla Kangaloo, who was the Chief Guest at this year's Pravasi Bhartiya Divas, and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who has recently assumed office for the second term. Indians first arrived in Trinidad and Tobago 180 years ago. This visit will provide an opportunity to rejuvenate the special bonds of ancestry and kinship that unite us," the statement said. From Port of Spain, he will travel to Buenos Aires, marking the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Argentina in 57 years. SEBI opens 6-month special window for re-lodgement of transfer deeds from July 7
Mumbai: In order to facilitate ease of investing and to secure investors' rights, capital market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on Wednesday decided to open a special window only for re-lodgement of transfer deeds, lodged before April 1, 2019 deadline, and were either returned, rejected or not attended due to deficiency in the documents or other reasons. The window will be open for 6 months-starting from July 7, 2025, to January 6, 2026. "During this period, the securities that are re-lodged for transfer shall be issued only in demat mode," the market regulator said in a circular. The market watchdog asked listed companies, RTAs and Stock Exchanges to advertise the opening of this special window through various media, including print and social media, on a bimonthly basis during the six-month period. "This issue was discussed in a Panel of Experts, which included RTAs, listed companies, and legal experts. Based on the discussion, the panel recommended that to alleviate the issue faced by the investors that missed the March 31, 2021, deadline for re-lodgement, one more opportunity may be granted for them to re-lodge such shares for transfer," the market regulator said in a statement. Notably, the transfer of securities in physical mode was discontinued with effect from April 1, 2019. Subsequently, the market regulator clarified that transfer deeds lodged prior to the deadline and rejected or returned due to a deficiency in the documents may be re-lodged with the requisite documents. Later, March 31, 2021, was fixed as the cut-off date for re-lodgement of transfer deeds. The decision came after the SEBI received requests from investors as well as RTAs and listed companies who had missed the timelines for re-lodging their documents for transfer of securities. Meanwhile, last month, the market regulator introduced key reforms to enhance the efficiency, inclusivity, and investor-friendliness of Indian financial markets. These decisions were approved during SEBI's board meeting chaired by Tuhin Kanta Pandey on June 18.

FII holdings in IT at 13-year low: Time to buy or brace for more pain?
Investor sentiment in India's IT services sector continues to remain bearish as foreign institutional investor (FII) holding has plummeted to a 13-year low. Domestic institutional ownership has also seen a marked decline. According to BNP Paribas, such pessimism could signal a contrarian buying opportunity — historically, low investor holdings have often preceded IT sector outperformance. The brokerage notes that the Indian IT sector is currently trading at a dividend yield of 3.2%, among the highest in the last decade, providing a cushion to valuations amid uncertainty. Despite weak sentiment, key indicators such as deal wins, pricing improvements, and hiring trends point to a relatively stable demand environment. Infosys, Persistent Favoured; Wipro, TCS Expected to Lag BNP Paribas expects Q1FY26 performance to diverge across Tier I IT firms. Infosys and Persistent Systems are forecast to post strong numbers, while TCS and Wipro may report weaker results. Infosys is projected to deliver 2.1% constant currency (CC) revenue growth, defying seasonal headwinds, whereas large-cap peers could see a -1% to -2.5% QoQ CC revenue decline. Mid-cap players like Persistent may see QoQ dollar revenue growth of 1%–4%, supported by operational efficiency and favourable currency movements. EBIT margins are likely to remain flat or decline among large caps, while mid-caps could witness improvement. Recovery Signs from Global Peers Encouraging signals from global players also fuel cautious optimism. Accenture's Q4FY25 guidance, placed at the higher end of its range, implies a rebound in organic growth. BNP Paribas highlights a shift in client conversations from 'pause' to 'leapfrog' initiatives. The brokerage maintains a positive outlook on Infosys, TCS, Persistent Systems, and HCL Technologies, while downgrading LTIMindtree to neutral following recent stock gains. It remains wary of Tech Mahindra and Wipro, citing continued underperformance risks. Sector Guidance and Outlook For FY26, Infosys may revise its growth guidance to 1.5–3.5%, while HCL Tech is expected to retain a 2–5% CC growth outlook. Wipro could project a modest -1% to +1% QoQ CC growth for Q2FY26. BNP Paribas concludes that despite short-term headwinds and the possibility of trade tension escalations, the bearish investor positioning is already pricing in much of the downside. If macroeconomic indicators stay supportive — particularly in the US — the current levels could offer long-term accumulation opportunities in select IT names.
