Kochi water metro to connect Kadamakkudy islands; launch expected ahead of Village Fest
'The construction work of Kadamakkudy terminal is in the finishing stages. We aim to finish the remaining works, mainly that of floating jetties, in another three months and start the service. We're slated to receive another vessel from the Cochin Shipyard next month, which will be deployed in the section,' Sajan P John, chief operating officer (COO), told TNIE.
The authorities are planning to operate services to Kadamakkudy-Paliyamthuruth from High Court or Mattancherry water terminals. 'What we aim is to provide connectivity to Kadamakuddy island. Hence, similar passenger ferries will be deployed.
However, we expect more tourists than normal passengers since there are only small numbers of residents in the islands. In the Fort Kochi section too, a lot of tourists are availing the normal service. We'll redefine the route either from High Court or Mattancherry terminal as per demand. Now the plan is to start the service from the High Court initially,' the official added.
However, KWML won't be operating back-to-back services as in the case of Fort Kochi or Kakkanad sections.

Modelled after the successful system in Kochi, Kerala, this eco-friendly transport option is designed to ease congestion and reduce pollution in the city. A New Phase In Chennai's Transport Network In a bid to tackle the city's ever-growing traffic challenges, a water-based public transport system is being launched in the Tamil Nadu capital. In its first phase, a water route will be developed from Napier Bridge near Egmore to the East Coast Road (ECR). The project includes boat stations, port facilities, and small-scale boat services. Eco-Friendly And Low-Noise Solution The Water Metro is intended to promote green, low-carbon transport along the Adyar River. It will operate with low fuel consumption and no smoke, making it a clean alternative to traditional road transport. Messi's Kerala visit called off as Argentina pulls out of 2025 match deal
KOCHI: The uncertainty has ended, on a sour note. Superstar Lionel Messi and his Argentina team will not play in Kerala this year. Having reassured football fans several times over the past eight months that the world champions would play in Kerala, Sports Minister V Abdurahiman on Monday finally conceded that the much-hyped visit is not happening. While the Argentina Football Association has expressed willingness to consider the March 2026 window, the state government has decided not to accept that arrangement, the minister said. 'What we agreed for was a match here in 2025. But in a recent communication, the AFA has breached the agreement,' Abdurahiman told the TNIE. He said the state government had reached an agreement with the AFA to have Messi and company playing in Kerala this October, the Argentine football body has conveyed that the deal is not possible anymore. 'This has happened after the transfer of funds required in line with the agreement,' the minister said. He said the initial communication was made as the AFA sent an invoice via email, offering the October international break. 'The agreement was made almost six months ago and we were awaiting clearances from the finance department, Reserve Bank of India, and the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs. After that, we successfully transferred the funds. Last week, we received the communication indicating the postponement,' the minister said. Further, he said the state government has officially conveyed to the Argentine Football Association that a 2026 window is unacceptable.
