ELLE Editors Share Their Ultimate Workout Clothes And Accessories

Elle30-05-2025
There's a lot of stuff out there, and not all fashion pieces are created equal. Luckily, the ELLE editors know their way around a shopping rail, and when it comes to helping you find those perfect wardrobe building blocks, they're up to the task. From the new and niche brands worth knowing to high-street hits of quality, and a few vintage treasures too, our ELLE Edits showcase the very best of the season.
The best activewear clothes and accessories will adapt to an array of activities, whether you're pursuing a PB in your local run club or perfecting a pose in Barre. But beyond the gym floor, the rise of WFH has seen many of us adopt athleisure as everyday wear. We now rely on sculpting leggings that wash well and will look as good when worn for Reformer as meeting friends for a weekend brunch, and trainers that deliver as highly in the style stakes as they do on a mixed trail run.
The rapid growth of the UK wellness industry (said to be worth over $223 billion in 2024) has also seen a plethora of new brands enter the market since 2010. The likes of Tala, Sporty and Rich, Adanola, Varley and On have quickly amassed loyal fan bases and impressive social media followings, while LA starlets Hailey Bieber and Bella Hadid are often seen wearing athleisure separates to run errands. With many Gen Z and Millennials now choosing a run club over a debauched night out, there exists a wealth of fitness product whether you're seeking to level up in Soul Cycle, F45, Barrecore or strength training.
FIND OUT MORE ON ELLE COLLECTIVE
Lululemon is loved for its leggings, On counts Zendaya and Mia Regan as fans, and Adanola enlisted Kendall Jenner for an edit having seen gross profits surge by 124% in 2024. We've also witnessed the rise of the Fashion Trainer, spearheaded by Wales Bonner for Adidas, whose cult designs can reach resale prices exceeding $500.
But how to choose the correct kit? When seeking separates for high intensity workouts, yoga or Pilates, look for polyester, nylon, elastane and spandex, which are known for their moisture-wicking, breathability, and stretch. More eco-conscious blends of cotton and bamboo will feel soft against the skin and suit lighter movement.
Running shoes should offer flexibility and support to cushion your feet, and styles differ for trail running versus flat roads or shorter, more casual runs. As a rule, look for waterproof trainers with mesh vents on the upper to boost airflow and allow any moisture to escape, keeping your feet cooler and reducing the risk of blisters. Gait analysis is often offered free as part of the fitting service in running shoe stores and will help you choose the shoe spec best suited to your foot type, terrain and running motion.
Many brands now offer multiple lengths in leggings, whether you're petite, tall, or just fancy the extra coverage, and most gymwear doesn't need to be hand-washed – just use a gentle spin at 30 degrees for a minimal time then air dry.
To power up your next workout, we've enlisted a selection of seasoned ELLE editors (who favour a variety of sporting pursuits) to share their favourite gym kit and accessories.
'I alternate between Spin and Reformer classes so need flattering, comfortable leggings that suit both pastimes. With Adanola having achieved cult status (and endorsement from Kaia Gerber, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Emily Ratajkowski) I bought a pair of its Ultimate Leggings and can attest to the product name's bold promise. With a four-way stretch fabric, they have a higher waistline for extra support and contour and come in three lengths – ankle, cropped, and tall. They wash brilliantly and I've been known to pair them with slingbacks and an oversized blazer at weekends. As well as the core collection of neutral colourways like black, navy and brown, there are seasonal drops of new shades. I'll soon be adding the Wrap Over style to basket to tap into the balletcore trend.' - Esther Coombes, Senior Ecommerce Editor, Luxury
'My workouts would be nothing without my Panache sports bra. The underwired style sees me through all sorts of gym activities from rebounding to weights, Pilates to Barre. I appreciate the way it has total coverage to ensure that I am held in place throughout. I was advised during its initial fitting to size up in the band and down in the cup and would recommend you do the same.' - Naomi Pike, Commissioning Editor

'As a city dweller who travels mostly on foot, I'm keen to track my step count and sleep cycles, so the new Watch Fit 4 Pro from Huawei is high on my wish list. Akin to having a personal wellness coach on your wrist, this stylish new wearable tech tracks your sleep duration and stage chart, and offers real-time monitoring of your ECG, heart rate and oxygen levels. Ranking as one of the lightest smart watch models on the market and with up to 10 days battery time after a full charge, you can choose from three sleek colour ways (I'd opt for Titanium Blue). The Trail Running Mode, with offline contour maps, GPS guidance and terrain-specific stats may influence me to be a little more daring on a weekend run, too.' - Esther Coombes, Senior Ecommerce Editor, Luxury
'My performances in Reformer classes would be nothing without the support of my Lululemon Align tank top; it unwaveringly hoists and hugs in all of the right places so that no matter the contortion of my body, I'm supported. I couldn't be without it (and the Align leggings are fantastic too).' - Naomi May, Deputy Site Editor
'Peloton leggings are a hidden gem. The plain black pair I have are my favourites by far – no underwear visible, they never fall down, hug you the perfect amount and don't fade or bobble (and I've worn them a lot). Their sizing is inclusive (it runs from XS to 3X) and they have an amazing range of patterns and colours. They also now collab with Lululemon. I've loved lots of the sportswear I've tried from the brand, but their leggings need to be tried to be believed. You'll be converted.' - Rhiannon Evans, Site Director
'As someone who sticks mainly to heeled boots or ballet flats, I loathe to wear trainers. But when Lululemon debuted the surprisingly stylish Chargefeel 3 – with their breathable mesh upper, silhouette-smoothing sock upper and featherweight sole – I found myself wanting to wear them outside of the gym, too.' - Abigail Southan, Senior Ecommerce Editor, Fashion and Beauty
'As a Wimbledon native, I like to nod to my heritage and Ralph Lauren's collaboration with the Championships is just the ticket. As Official Outfitter of Wimbledon, Ralph Lauren launches new merch ahead of each year's tennis competition, and this preppy-inspired crew neck jumper will be perfect pre and post workout.' - Esther Coombes, Senior Ecommerce Editor, Luxury
'I never normally read too much into the name of a trainer but the On Cloudmonster 2s really do live up to theirs. Bouncy and beautifully cushioned, I can spring around the park in these and then also wear them to the office.' - Hannah Nathanson, Features Director
'You might know Spanx for its shapewear, but the legendary lingerie brand also does the most amazing activewear, too. As well as the collection's control leggings, I like to slip into this half-zip top which is ludicrously comfy. It's sweat-wicking, so you can workout in it, but I might have been known to wear it with the matching trackies to the pub too...' - Abigail Southan, Senior Ecommerce Editor, Fashion and Beauty

These Are the Summer 2025 Blush Trends Everyone's Wearing Right Now

Every item on this page was chosen by an ELLE editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy. It seems that every few years, a particular aspect of a makeup routine takes center stage. In the '90s, it was lip liners and glosses. During the late 2010s, thick, precise eyebrows were the moment, all thanks to Tumblr and Kylie Jenner herself—an era we're all either grieving or actively trying to forget. Now, blush has made its way to the forefront of the makeup conversation. Perhaps one of the most versatile products in your makeup routine, blush comes in various colors and requires strategic placement to achieve a distinct finish. 'Blush placement can change your final makeup look completely,' says makeup artist and lead brand educator of Make Up For Ever Eddie Duyos. For instance, a rosy-pink blush is the signature look of pop princess Sabrina Carpenter. '[Blush] can create a sweet, flushed effect, or a powerful sculpted look. Simply adjusting where you apply your blush can be totally transformative.' In a 2020 YouTube video showcasing her five-minute makeup routine, model Naomi Campbell emphasized a high blush placement to accentuate her striking bone structure, resulting in a lifted finish. On the other hand, the trend known on TikTok as #dollmakeup requires placing blush directly on the apple of the cheeks to create a more youthful appearance. Not to mention the 'I'm Cold' blush, where a reddish blush is placed on the nose and high points of the cheek, mimicking the flush of red in our faces after facing the winter chill. Plus, who can forget last summer's sunset blush, complete with an orange and pink ombre palette and a golden highlight that created a sunny gradient along our cheeks. This summer, according to the latest runways, TikTok trends, and makeup artists, blush remains the must-have product in a routine. Of course, finding the right blush for you doesn't have to feel like a chore. Luckily, with all of the various colors and formulas available, the process can be a lot of fun. 'For a natural-looking blush, try matching the shade to the color of your inner lip. Remember, this is just a starting point—allow yourself to be expressive and playful,' says Duyos. 'Color is a form of expression, so your preferences in shades and textures should always come first.' Below, we poll experts on all the insider details about the latest blush trends and how to achieve the look. There are a lot of things we can thank the leading ladies of Pop music for: Ariana Grande's gripping lyrics, Victoria Monet's masterful production, and, of course, Sabrina Carpenter's spicy innuendos. Yet one thing that they all have in common is a recognizable makeup look, referred to as 'doll makeup.' 'It's super popular right now because people are experimenting with bolder shades,' Duyos explains. 'After years of bronzing and contouring, a bold blush offers a quick and fun pick-me-up that no other product does.' The star of the trend is a bubblegum blush shade that creates a sweet, fresh-faced look. 'You can achieve this doll-like effect by placing a pink blush like MAKE UP FOR EVER's Artist Blush in Daring Candy right on the apples of the cheeks.' Shopping for a new blush can sometimes feel like walking through an aisle of Valentine's Day decorations, wading through an endless stream of pink and red. However, believe it or not, opting for other shades, such as orange or even purple, can be a worthy change to your usual routine. 'I have always been a huge fan of bold, colored blushes in general because they bring so much joy & playfulness to makeup,' says Duyos. For deeper skin tones, an orange shade gives a sunkissed glow, while purple shades offer a berry tint that melds seamlessly with a warm bronzer. On fairer skin tones, using an orange shade at the center of the face and even on the tip of the nose can give you that effortless 'just came from the beach' look. The '80s are back, baby, and this blush trend proves it. A technique that Duyos describes as 'draping,' this particular look brings an editorial flair to any look. Start by placing your blush on the high points of your cheeks, and then blend upwards toward your temples and into your eyelids, similar to applying eyeshadow. Although the result appears as if you took hours to perfect, it is actually a quick way to elevate your makeup. The key to this trend is opting for a pigmented blush that is flexible and easy to blend to form a subtle, fanned-out look that instantly leaves you feeling and looking runway-ready.

A new restaurant rating app is luring young Bay Area diners away from Yelp

Zo Mendez didn't have a reservation at the hot new San Francisco restaurant Jules. So he arrived early, inconspicuously dressed in all black from his beanie to his Adidas high tops, and settled into a seat at the bar. While he hardly stood out from the crowd, Mendez is, by one measure, among the most powerful food influencers in the city. Mendez dominates on Beli, a restaurant rating app that's sending thousands of Bay Area foodies, particularly younger ones, into a frenzy. Beli users have left 3.6 million restaurant reviews in the Bay Area, said Chief Technology Officer Eliot Frost, who runs the company in New York City with his wife and co-founder, CEO Judy Thelen. Unlike other apps, such as the 20-year-old Yelp, where everyone sees ratings from strangers, Beli users only see their friends' reviews. But Mendez appears on the app-wide leaderboard — in San Francisco, he's the top-ranked user. 'It's tasty, dude,' he remarked after a waiter brought out a crudo appetizer with yellowtail, blood orange and capers. What pleased Mendez more, though, was the down-to-earth, satisfying pepperoni pizza. Per his 'pepperoni pizza rule,' he tries the trustworthy pie at every pizza restaurant he goes to, as a reference point. The meal at Jules ultimately earned an 8.2 rating out of 10, which Beli calculates for users by asking a series of 'this or that' comparisons to other restaurants a user has visited. For San Francisco's number one reviewer, Mendez is surprisingly minimal with his posts. Like all the reviews before it, the Jules review was barren, with no photos or descriptions — which the app allows — just a rating. He pays for all his meals himself, except for lunches delivered to the office of the company where he works. At 34 years old, Mendez said he's the oldest person he knows that uses Beli. The app doesn't collect age-related data, Thelen told the Chronicle in an interview, but it's 'relatively split' between a Gen Z and millennial audience. Powered by this younger user base, Beli boasts 70 million restaurant ratings worldwide — more than Yelp — Frost claimed. But most local owners told the Chronicle they'd never heard of Beli. Gerad Gobel of Rose Pizzeria, which is among Mendez's top-ranked restaurants, said it's unclear if Beli is impacting his business. Mendez recently awarded it a 9.8, causing 87 of his followers to bookmark the restaurant as one to try. But Gobel said it was more obvious when rave reviews from Chronicle critics and New York Times lists boosted reservations at his neighborhood restaurant. 'I don't know when we started getting reviewed on Beli, but I would say, in the past four or five months, you can definitely tell we're getting a more 20-something crowd,' Gobel said. Still, the app wasn't personally appealing to him. 'I'm a millennial with creaking bones now,' he said. 'I am currently out of the Zeitgeist.' Brandon Rice, chef-owner of the San Francisco restaurant Ernest, was also unfamiliar with the app. But he downloaded Beli for the first time to check it out. 'Ernest is pretty good on it,' Rice said, referring to the restaurant's 8.8 average rating across over 4,000 reviews. 'Judy apparently didn't like it,' the chef noted, referring to the Beli CEO: New accounts like Rice's are prompted to follow Thelen after registering, contributing to her follower count of over 730,000. She gave Ernest a 6.2. Thelen said Beli doesn't consider itself a review platform, but rather a 'social restaurant list-keeping app' — a difference she strongly emphasized. The app helps users remember where they've been and where they'd like to go next. This list-keeping element was what drew Stanford masters student Matthew Lee onto the app during his undergraduate years at UC Berkeley. Lee said he'd embarked on a mission to try every restaurant in his college town just around the time that Beli emerged as a 'bandwagon' trend among friends. 'It became maybe a little competitive, somewhere along the way,' Lee said. He seems to be winning that competition: he's now the top-ranked Beli user in Berkeley. Compared to the Beli, Yelp reviews come with pressure, Lee said, recognizing how much those reviews impact business owners and are viewed by strangers looking for their next meal. Beli, on the other hand, is mostly for friends. 'There's just stuff that would not make it to Yelp,' Lee said, 'like 'Oh my god, I was so big-backed,' with a picture of a completely demolished plate,' he went on, using a popular Gen-Z slang for overeating. For Frost and Thelen, the focus remains on growing Beli's user base and virality. The company has raised $12 million since its founding in 2021. Thelen told the Chronicle, but she doesn't want Beli to operate like a 'traditional consumer tech startup.' 'We run as lean as possible,' Thelen said, referring to Beli's current full-time team of just four, including her and Frost. The company has a partnership with OpenTable, letting customers book restaurants through the app. And the Beli Supper Club, which is an invite-only subscription to top-ranked users, brings in cash for the company, but is currently limited to New York City. Perks include partnership dinners at elusive restaurants. 'We get loads of requests to bring it elsewhere,' Thelen said, 'and S.F. is top of the list.'

3 Nineties Winona Ryder Looks To Steal For 2025 – From Grunge Glamour To Red-Carpet Minimalism

Winona Ryder graces the cover of ELLE UK this month. A true style icon, the actor has always mastered that elusive balance between rebellious and refined dressing, making her one of the most enduring fashion muses of the Nineties and beyond. In celebration of her timeless style, we've rounded up three of her most iconic 1990s outfits and reimagined them for 2025. From red-carpet moments to off-duty airport chic, these looks feel just as relevant today as they did then, proving that good style never goes out of fashion. At the Eyes Wide Shut premiere party in 1999, Ryder embodied late-Nineties minimalism in a sheer black slip dress, arm cuff and kitten-heeled mules. It was a look that whispered rather than shouted; a quietly provocative, effortlessly cool ensemble. For 2025, we're recreating this barely-there elegance with a sheer, bias-cut slip that nods to Ryder's original. Pair it with kitten heels – chic, sensible, and a nostalgic throwback to Nineties party style that won't kill your feet by midnight. Add a hint of glint with a sculptural cuff-style bracelet or two, paired with matching earrings. Ryder's 1992 Dracula premiere look, an iridescent blue skirt suit complete with broderie anglaise trim and an in-built corset, was a masterclass in power dressing. This is a look you could lift wholesale for 2025 – the ruffle and lace detail falls just on the right side of coquettish, especially when styled simply with just a pair of slingback heels and a simple necklace. Or, you could channel that same cool confidence with a contemporary twist, swapping corseted tailoring for a boxy jacket and matching skirt. Either way, like Ryder then (and now), you'll look smart, subversive and subtly glamorous. Tailoring has always been a key part of Ryder's style, whether on the red carpet or off-duty. This oversized blazer and cropped trouser combo, which she wore for a flight into LAX, is effortless, a little grunge and timeless. Whether you're airport-bound or running errands, this is Ryder's signature brand of nonchalant chic that turns heads without ever trying too hard. Copy her original 1990s 'fit with a menswear-inspired blazer worn over an oversized white tee (dinosaur suitcase optional), or channel Ryder's ELLE cover shoot with something a little more tailored, worn with lashings of gold jewellery. Daisy Murray is the Digital Fashion Editor at ELLE UK, spotlighting emerging designers, sustainable shopping, and celebrity style. Since joining in 2016 as an editorial intern, Daisy has run the gamut of fashion journalism - interviewing Molly Goddard backstage at London Fashion Week, investigating the power of androgynous dressing and celebrating the joys of vintage shopping.
