Atlanta Jewish community mourns loss of embassy staffers in DC shooting
The Atlanta Jewish community is mourning the loss of Sarah Milgrim and Yaron Lischinsky, who were killed in a shooting at the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., during an embassy event.
Elias Rodriguez has been charged in connection with the attack, which is believed to have been motivated by political statements, and federal prosecutors are considering additional charges, including the death penalty.
In response to the tragedy, community leaders are emphasizing resilience and solidarity, while advocating for increased security measures and encouraging support for Jewish residents in Atlanta.
ATLANTA - Members of Atlanta's Jewish community are reeling following the deadly shooting of Sarah Milgrim, an Israeli Embassy staffer with close ties to the city, during an attack at the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C.
Milgrim and her colleague Yaron Lischinsky were shot and killed during an embassy event Tuesday evening. Authorities have charged Elias Rodriguez, a Chicago man, in connection with the killings, alleging he entered the museum shouting "Free, free Palestine!" before opening fire. Federal prosecutors say additional charges are possible and have not ruled out seeking the death penalty.

But in Atlanta, the focus has turned to grief, fear, and solidarity.
What they're saying
"This incident, this event is terrifying and just devastating to me and the entire Jewish community," said Dov Wilker, the Atlanta regional director of the American Jewish Committee (AJC), which had previously worked with Milgrim.
Milgrim had been active in AJC's ACCESS program, which brings together young Jewish professionals across the country. Wilker said Milgrim was deeply engaged with the Atlanta community, helping lead trips abroad and organize interfaith outreach.
"She traveled with them to Morocco. She did programming with them in D.C. This was really their friend — a beautiful friend of theirs who all she wanted to do was make a positive impact on the world," Wilker said.
Since the shooting, Wilker has been in contact with young professionals who knew Milgrim. "They are absolutely devastated. They never thought that something like this could happen," he said. "As bad as antisemitism got, they never thought that a young Jewish professionals event would be a target of this type of attack."
Anat Sultan-Dadon, Consul General of Israel to the Southeastern United States, said she had met both victims and believed the attack was intended to intimidate those working in diplomacy.
"We were open this morning. We are resilient. We are strong. And we will not allow for terror to win," Sultan-Dadon said. "We will not be terrorized and we will not be afraid to stand up for who we are and for what is right. We will continue to represent Israel proudly."
Wilker echoed calls for strength but acknowledged the deep anxiety now gripping many in the community.
"One of the things that has to happen in the Jewish community — and continues to happen — is an increase of visible security presence," he said.
The AJC is urging residents across metro Atlanta to reach out to their Jewish neighbors in the wake of the shooting.
"Check in with them. Support them. Let them know they are not alone," Wilker said.

Sen. John Cornyn urges FBI to help locate Texas Democrats who fled state to stall redistricting effort
Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) asked the FBI Tuesday for help locating, arresting and investigating dozens of Texas Democratic lawmakers who fled the Lone Star State in an effort to stall a Republican-led redistricting effort. Cornyn, who is facing a primary challenge for his Senate seat from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, made the request in a letter to FBI Director Kash Patel, where he described the 57 absentee Democrats – some of whom appear to be holed up in Illinois and New York – as 'potential lawbreakers.' 3 Cornyn noted that several of the absent Democrats appear to be hiding in other states, including Illinois and New York. AP 'Since these state legislators are currently outside of Texas, the Texas Department of Public Safety may need support to arrest the fleeing lawmakers,' the senator wrote. 'I request the FBI's assistance, as federal resources are necessary to locate the out-of-state Texas legislators who are potentially acting in violation of the law,' Cornyn continued. 'The FBI has tools to aid state law enforcement when parties cross state lines, including to avoid testifying or fleeing a scene of a crime.' 'Specifically, I am concerned that legislators who solicited or accepted funds to aid in their efforts to avoid their legislative duties may be guilty of bribery or other public corruption offenses,' he added. Cornyn noted that his request is 'time-sensitive' as the Texas Legislature only has about two-weeks remaining in its special session to consider flood-relief bills and the redrawing of state congressional maps. The FBI declined to comment. By absconding from the state capitol, the missing Democratic lawmakers have prevented the GOP-controlled legislature from establishing the quorum necessary to consider the bills. Cornyn's request comes after Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott ordered state authorities on Monday to 'arrest' the 'delinquent Texas House Democrats' and bring them back to Austin so the special session can continue. Abbott also directed the Texas Rangers to 'immediately investigate fleeing Texas House Democrats for potential bribery and any other potential legal violations connected to their refusal to appear for a quorum, conduct business, and cast votes.' The governor indicated the investigations would extend to 'anyone who aided or abetted such potential crimes.' 'As we're talking right now, Texas Department of Public Safety officers are on the streets looking for those Democrat House members to arrest them and to take them to the Texas capitol and hold them there until a quorum is reached,' Abbott said in an interview with Fox News host Will Cain on Tuesday. Abbott noted that it's unclear how many of the Democratic lawmakers remain out-of-state but that authorities are 'working with officials in other states to find ways in which we can try to arrest' them and 'bring them back to the state of Texas.' 3 The absent Democrats have prevented the Texas House of Representatives from reaching the quorum necessary to consider a controversial redistricting effort and other legislative measures. Getty Images 3 Cornyn's request to Patel comes after the Texas governor and attorney general moved to arrest and investigate the missing lawmakers. REUTERS The governor also said he'll seek to remove Democratic House members for the legislature who received financial assistance to leave the state. 'Democrats don't seem to know that taking or receiving a payment like they have to escape or not take a vote subjects them to forfeiture of their seat,' Abbott said on 'The Will Cain Show.' 'It's going to be one of the legal grounds you're going to see asserted here immediately to seek the vacation or elimination or abandonment of these House seats by the Democrats,' he added. 'So we will remove them from office and call for elections to replace them.' Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows and Paxton have set a Friday deadline for the runaway Democrats to appear at the capitol before 'judicial orders' are sought declaring that they have 'vacated their office.' 'The people of Texas elected lawmakers, not jet-setting runaways looking for headlines,' Paxton wrote on X. 'If you don't show up to work, you get fired.' The deadline was issued after the Texas House again failed to reach a quorum on Thursday afternoon.

Netanyahu's security cabinet discusses potential full Gaza takeover
Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reportedly backing a plan to seize full control of the Gaza Strip, despite misgivings from military officials and growing international criticism of Israel. During a high-level meeting with Israeli security officials Tuesday, Netanyahu said he favored occupying the Gaza Strip even if it meant that Hamas, the militant group that rules the enclave, kills or harms hostages seized during attacks nearly two years ago, reports The Times of Israel. The meeting highlighted a disagreement between Netanyahu and Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir, chief of staff for the Israeli Defense Forces, reports The Jerusalem Post. Netanyahu said Israel will only be able to free the hostages with a change of approach, according to the paper. Zamir responded that occupying Gaza could be a trap that endangers the hostages. Since launching its campaign to eradicate Hamas, Israel has faced growing international backlash on the toll it's taken on Palestinian civilians who've faced death, displacement and, more recently, widespread starvation. Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi on Tuesday accused Isreali of committing genocide in Gaza, claiming the war was no longer about releasing hostages and that the situation has become "a diplomatic bargaining chip," reports Israel Hayom. "This war is no longer about achieving diplomatic aims or freeing the hostages, but has become a war of starvation, genocide, and the elimination of the Palestinian issue," el-Sissi said. Netanyahu's reported shift in his position comes days before a scheduled meeting Thursday of the Israeli Security Cabinet to discuss the direction of the campaign, the news outlet the Times of Israel also reported. The meeting did not include ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, both members of the Security Cabinet who have voiced support for occupying Gaza, reports Israel Hayom. Ben-Gvir on Monday said in a post on X that the "The Chief of Staff is required to state clearly that he will fully comply with the directives of the political echelon, even if a decision is made for conquest and decisive action." Netanyahu's office on Tuesday posted a brief statement to X confirming the three-hour meeting. "The IDF is prepared to carry out any decision made by the Security Cabinet," the statement added. The Israeli Defense Forces currently controls about three-quarters of the Gaza Strip and has avoided operations in areas where it suspects Hamas is holding hostages out of concerns they will be executed, according to the Times of Israel.
