Kids get ‘safe space' with art, books & toys at 7 police stations

Mumbai police recently opened a dedicated safe space for children of suspects and victims at seven police stations in zone 4, covering Matunga, Sion, Antop Hill, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Marg, Kalachowkie, Bhoiwada and Wadala truck terminal.
At these police stations, one room with a separate entry, dubbed as a 'child-friendly corner', has been earmarked solely for children while their caregivers are being questioned or are recording their testimonies.
The room has child-friendly furniture, toys, art materials and books to keep them occupied. A senior police officer said dedicated women police officers with specialised training will handle the children to ensure that interactions are respectful.
The model will soon be replicated at the remaining 85 police stations in the city. Mumbai police are also expected to collaborate with child psychologists, legal aid experts and NGOs to provide holistic support to children.
The initiative aligns closely with Juvenile Justice Act.
Also dubbed 'the Matunga model', the initiative aims at bridging what experts have often called a persistent gap in how legal systems, especially police stations, engage with minors. "Children often find themselves at police stations in extremely vulnerable circumstances, either as victims of abuse, witnesses to crimes, or children of accused. In such situations, such corners can keep children busy and distract them from the harsh situation at police stations," said a police officer.
"This is more than a room—it's a message," said DCP (zone 4) R Raghasudha. "A message that Mumbai police are committed to treating children with dignity, care and compassion."
Stuti Kacker, chairperson of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, said children must be protected, heard and nurtured, especially when they find themselves within systems that have historically failed to accommodate their voices.
NGOs welcomed police's initiative. Kumar Nilendu, general maanger (programmes), CRY West, said the child rights NGO held training sessions for police as part of the initiative. "The change in their approach would make children much less intimidated by police."

Mumbai: Amid charges that a BMC officer was involved in a purported sale this year of 10 Borivli plots owned by and in possession of the civic body and that she is reluctant to give up the post of assistant municipal commissioner despite being promoted as deputy municipal commissioner (DMC), industries minister Uday Samant said in the legislative council on Tuesday that a DCP-rank officer will probe the alleged land scam and the civic official will be directed to take her new charge immediately. The issue was raised by Congress's Bhai Jagtap through a calling attention motion. He pointed out that Saibaba Nagar layout in Borivli, spanning 4.7 acres, was developed in the late 1970s. The layout has 18 plots, of which 10 were handed over to BMC. On the remaining eight plots, there are 16 residential buildings that went in for redevelopment, which was stayed by the civic official, said Jagtap. 11 cops suspended for assaulting livestock trader, extorting Rs 10k
Kanpur: Eleven police personnel were suspended for attacking a livestock trader from Aligarh and extorting Rs 10,000 from him in Kanpur on Saturday. Following a formal complaint, the additional deputy commissioner of police, south, initiated an investigation which revealed that the personnel left their assigned spot of duty to extort money from the trader. According to police, livestock trader Mohammad Uzair and driver Laxman were transporting animals from Sarsaul in Kanpur to Aligarh when they were attacked and robbed of Rs 10,000 by PRV personnel in Chakeri area. Deputy commissioner of police (DCP), south, Deependra Nath Chaudhary ordered an investigation and after preliminary investigation, suspended 11 personnel. The complainant alleged that while he was passing through Barra, personnel from a police response vehicle (PRV 7058) in Chakeri stopped him and demanded payment for transportation of animals. "Subsequently, PRV units (6504 & 7055) from Hanumant Vihar police station also reached the spot and insisted on a payment of Rs 500 per policeman for passage," he claimed. He said that when he refused to pay, the personnel forcibly removed them from their vehicle, assaulted them, and left the spot after threatening them. The investigation established that PRV 7058 from Chakeri police station, operated by constable Atul Sachan, intercepted the animal trader's vehicle. The unit had head constable Rishirajan, and constables Hariom Singh and Rinki Rani. PRV 7055 from Hanumant Vihar included head constables Ajay Kumar Yadav and Anand Kumar, and constable Umashankar Dixit. Additionally, PRV 6504 from the same station was driven by head constable Pradeep Kumar, accompanied by Amir Hasan, constable Sonu Yadav, and Aradhana.

Nagpur riot mastermind Fahim Khan slapped with preventive action, released on Rs1 lakh bond
Nagpur: Three days after Nagpur riots mastermind, Fahim Khan , was granted bail by a sessions court, he was picked up along with 20 others by Ganeshpeth police shortly after they walked out of Nagpur central jail on Tuesday. Khan and others were presented before Zonal DCP Rahul Madane for preventive action.
