Oman's first energy transition fund launched

Times of Oman09-07-2025
Muscat: Oman Investment Authority (OIA) has announced the launch of the Sultanate of Oman's first investment fund dedicated to the energy transition, established through a strategic partnership between the 'Future Fund Oman (FFO)' and Templewater, a leading alternative asset management company based in the People's Republic of China.
The joint fund aims to accelerate the pace of energy transition in the Sultanate of Oman and support efforts to diversify income sources in line with Oman Vision 2040, by investing in innovative projects that advance net-zero goals and open new horizons for sustainable economic growth.
This 50:50 joint fund—starting with a total capital commitment of RO 77 million (USD 200 million), equally contributed by FFO and Templewater—represents a pioneering initiative in clean energy and the shift towards a low-carbon economy. The initial capital base serves as a catalyst to unlock further capital and attract high-quality, scalable investment opportunities aligned with Oman Vision 2040. All investment opportunities will be located within the Sultanate of Oman, reinforcing its ambition to become a regional hub for renewable energy innovation.
The Fund aims to invest in vital sectors and strategic projects, including clean molecules, green data centers, energy storage, smart mobility, and all forms of renewable energy, such as solar and wind. It will also prioritize the development of innovative solutions and technologies in energy efficiency and industrial innovation, tailored to meet the needs of the Omani and regional markets.
Built as a platform to mobilize further investment, the Fund seeks to co-develop commercially viable energy transition projects in collaboration with both public and private sector stakeholders. It also aims to attract additional institutional investments—locally and globally—to expand the scale and impact of its future programs and projects.
Abdulsalam Mohammed Al Murshidi, Chairman of OIA, affirmed that this partnership represents a key strategic step in positioning the Sultanate of Oman as a regional and global hub for clean and renewable energy solutions. 'OIA seeks to attract expertise and global best practices to support Oman's ambition to become a leading exporter of clean molecules and renewable energy solutions,' he said.
On his turn, Cliff Zhang, Chairman and CEO of Templewater, stated: 'This Fund reflects our commitment to investing in solutions that not only deliver measurable climate benefits and robust returns but also enhance energy security and investor confidence. The Sultanate of Oman's supportive regulatory environment and progressive investment outlook make it a standout destination for advanced energy transition manufacturing and broader economic diversification.'
Templewater will leverage its global partner network and technical expertise to localize scalable, innovative solutions within the Sultanate of Oman—fully aligned with FFO's mandate to stimulate the national economy, foster strategic investment partnerships, and unlock economic value for the Sultanate of Oman and investors.
The fund is expected to attract strategic partners and investors from around the world, including major global players in the renewable energy and clean technology sectors, positioning it as an integrated platform that supports innovation, sustainability, and startup empowerment.
This collaboration marks another major step in a series of initiatives launched by FFO since its establishment in early 2024, with a total capital of USD 5.2 billion. FFO allocates 90% of its capital to strategic local projects and 10% to support SMEs and startups. The fund underscores OIA's commitment to directing capital toward projects that enhance economic diversification, maximize in-country value (ICV), and support digital and technological transformation.
In addition to financial investment, the fund will foster effective partnerships with both public and private institutions, creating opportunities for training and capacity building in the renewable energy sector. It will also contribute to research and development and the transfer of best international practices, strengthening the Sultanate of Oman's innovation ecosystem and ensuring both economic and environmental sustainability.
This announcement comes amid growing regional and international momentum to address climate change and promote clean energy alternatives. The Sultanate of Oman aspires to lead in the production and export of clean molecules, while creating an investment-friendly environment that supports its Paris Agreement commitments and its journey to net zero by 2050.

Oman oil price reaches $70.52 per barrel

MUSCAT: The official price of Oman oil for September delivery on Wednesday reached $70.52. The price of Oman oil decreased by 18 cents compared to Tuesday's price of $70.70. The monthly average price of Omani crude oil for July delivery reached $63.62 per barrel, a decrease of $4.25 compared to the price for June delivery. Meanwhile, international oil prices fell for the fourth consecutive session on Wednesday, as investors assessed trade developments including a US tariff deal with Japan ahead of a US stocks data announcement. Brent crude futures were down 50 cents, or 0.7%, at $68.05 a barrel as of 11:19 GMT. US West Texas Intermediate crude futures were down 47 cents, or 0.7%, at $64.78 per barrel. Both benchmarks lost about 1% in the previous session after the EU said it was considering countermeasures against US tariffs. US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that the US and Japan had struck a trade deal that included a 15% tariff on US imports from Japan. 'The slide (in prices) of the past three sessions appears to have abated but I don't expect much of an upward impetus from news of the US-Japan trade deal as the hurdles and delays being reported in talks with the EU and China will remain a drag on sentiment', said an analyst. — Agencies MUSCAT: The official price of Oman oil for September delivery on Wednesday reached $70.52. First coffee farm opens in Jabal Shams

MUSCAT: In a strategic move to develop high — altitude agriculture and expand Oman's specialty crop portfolio, Coffee Farm Company, led by founder and CEO Said al Wardi, has launched a commercial coffee cultivation project in Jabal Shams. The initiative aims to plant 6,000 coffee seedlings by 2027, positioning Oman as a potential producer of high-quality Arabica coffee. The project began with the planting of 300 seedlings of the Yemeni Udaini variety, one of the world's oldest and most prized Arabica strains. The number is expected to rise to 5,000 seedlings in 2026 and reach 6,000 the following year. The crop is being cultivated at elevations considered critical for specialty-grade coffee, with Jabal Shams offering the right combination of altitude, temperature and humidity. 'The climate in Oman's highlands is more suitable for coffee than many people realise', said Al Wardi. 'This isn't about hobby farming, it's a serious agricultural and economic opportunity aligned with national goals'. The project is among the first of its kind in the Sultanate of Oman. While coffee is not native to Oman, the country's mountainous regions, especially in Al Dakhiliyah and Dhofar — have shown promising results in experimental cultivation. One of the early challenges faced by the company was acquiring viable coffee seedlings. 'Most countries classify coffee as a strategic crop and restrict seed exports', Al Wardi explained. 'We overcame this by propagating seedlings locally in Salalah and Bahla'. To ensure sustainable expansion, the company has partnered with Nakheel Oman Development Company and the Agricultural Research Centre in Qummah, which are supporting the development of tissue-cultured plants to scale the operation. In parallel, Coffee Farm Company is investing in agri-tourism infrastructure. Plans are underway to establish a coffee visitor experience site in Jabal Shams, where tourists will be able to tour the plantations, participate in harvest activities and visit a Coffee Museum located near the popular viewpoint Shurfat Al Nakhr. 'This initiative is not just about agriculture. It's about integrating farming, tourism and heritage into one value chain', Al Wardi said. The company will market its coffee under the name Bunn Al Madar, inspired by the traditional clay dallah used for brewing coffee in Oman. The brand already produces roasted beans and capsules; and aims to build a strong 'Made in Oman' identity. The project supports Oman Vision 2040 objectives, which prioritise agricultural innovation, economic diversification and the development of non-oil sectors, particularly in rural and mountainous areas. 'This is just the beginning', Al Wardi said. 'With the right support and continued experimentation, Omani coffee can become a recognised name in the regional and global market'.
