NHL Robs Flames Player Of First Career Hat Trick

Yahoo31-01-2025
Matthew Coronato collected his first NHL hat trick on Thursday night as the Calgary Flames defeated the Anaheim Ducks 4-1 at the Saddledome.
However, shortly after the game ended, the NHL adjusted one of the goals, awarding it to Blake Coleman, thus robbing Coronato of his hat trick accomplishment.

Down 1-0 going into the second period, Adam Klapka evened things up just 15 seconds into the middle frame before Coronato took over the scoring.
At 19:16, the 22-year-old fired a shot from the slot that beat John Gibson to give Calgary their first lead.
Although Coleman picked up the initial assist on the play, further review showed that Coronato's shot deflected off Coleman and past the Ducks goalie, resulting in a goal change.
However, in real-time, Coronato scored his first goal and added his second, an insurance tally, in the third with 3:40 to go.
As time ticked down and the Ducks opted to pull their goalie, Coronato fired the puck the length of the ice into an empty net as hat rained down the standings.

At the buzzer, everyone in attendance believed that Coronato had just scored his first hat trick since the 2020-21 season when he was with the Chicago Steel in the USHL, but by the time they got home, the NHL had adjusted the goal.
Despite losing out on a milestone hat trick on Thursday, the next time Coronato scores three goals, it will be an even more memorable moment that everyone can look back on with a chuckle.
In 45 games this season, the former 13th overall pick (2021) has 13 goals and 14 assists for 27 points.

Sharks claim veteran defenseman Nick Leddy off waivers from Blues

The San Jose Sharks claimed St. Louis Blues defenseman Nick Leddy on waivers Thursday, per The Athletic's Chris Johnston, gaining an experienced defenseman and providing salary-cap relief to the Blues on a player who had been buried on the depth chart. Leddy has one season left on a four-year, $16 million contract ($4 million average annual value). The Blues are now off the hook for Leddy's $3 million salary and $4 million cap hit in 2025-26. Advertisement The 34-year-old was drafted by the Minnesota Wild at No. 16 in 2009. His rights were traded to the Chicago Blackhawks, with whom he won a Stanley Cup in 2013. He played seven seasons for the New York Islanders after that, making two trips to the Stanley Cup playoffs' semifinal round. He then played part of one season for the Detroit Red Wings before being traded to the Blues. Overall, Leddy has played 1,042 regular-season games in the NHL. The 6-foot, 205-pound defenseman has 75 goals and 416 points in the regular season. He's played 137 postseason games and has eight goals and 39 points. Leddy played in just 31 games with the Blues last season because of an undisclosed injury. St. Louis traded for Logan Mailloux on Tuesday, effectively replacing him on the roster for 2025-26. Sharks sign Dmitry Orlov to 2-year contract with $6.5 million cap hit

The San Jose Sharks signed free agent defenseman Dmitry Orlov to a two-year contract with a $6.5 million cap hit on Thursday, a league source told The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun. The veteran defenseman is a well-rounded presence on the blue line, capable of handling a heavy workload. Orlov has averaged approximately 20 minutes of ice time throughout his 13-year NHL career, and hit that mark almost exactly this past season for the Hurricanes. He had six goals and 22 assists in 76 regular-season games, plus four more assists in the playoffs. The 33-year-old defenseman has finished with a positive plus-minus rating in 12 of his 13 seasons, and has topped 20 points for 10 straight years. He's not the most dynamic with the puck but is a steady puck-mover with strong durability, especially at 5-foot-11. Orlov missed only six out of 190 total games with Carolina over the last two years while blocking 120 shots and laying 217 hits. Advertisement Unfortunately for Orlov, one of the lasting memories of his 2024-25 campaign will be him crushing his stick across the goal post after a poor performance by he and his Hurricanes teammates against Florida in the Eastern Conference final, but the Russian blueliner's lengthy resume supersedes that disappointing end to the season.
