Man dead and girl injured following shooting incident at Carlow shopping centre
The PA news agency understands that it appears that the dead man's wounds were self-inflicted.
A young girl was also injured in the incident but did not require hospital care.
Gardai have identified the dead man as a white Irish male.
Ireland's Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan has described it as a 'really shocking incident'.
One local councillor told how people ran terrified from the shopping centre in Carlow town as shots were fired.
The body of the man remains at the scene and will not be removed until the area has been declared safe.
The shopping centre has been evacuated and emergency services remain at the scene, but gardai said there is no further concern for public safety.
A Garda spokesperson said they were alerted to reports of a firearm discharge at Fairgreen Shopping Centre shortly after 6.15pm.
The spokesperson said: 'An Garda Siochana are currently at the scene, with the shopping centre and car park cordoned off.
'The cordon will remain in place overnight.
'A white Irish adult male is deceased at the scene.
'The Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team has been requested to attend.'
The spokesperson added: 'A female juvenile received treatment from paramedics following the incident but did not require hospital care.
'It's undetermined at this time as to how those injuries were sustained.'
Gardai have asked that anyone who may have recorded footage of the incident not share it on social media platforms or messaging apps, but instead provide it to Carlow Garda Station.

Investigations are ongoing.
Ireland's deputy premier, Simon Harris, said he was 'deeply concerned' to hear about the incident and was being kept briefed.
Mr Harris said: 'I understand a young child has been hurt and I join with people across our country in thinking of them and their family tonight.
'I am also thinking of all those who witnessed this situation and the awful shock and upset it must have caused them.
'I know their families and communities will rally to support them.
'I am grateful to our emergency services for their work and response.'
The Tanaiste added: 'This is a live Garda Investigation with the support of members of the Army Bomb Disposal Unit.
'I have been in touch with the chief of staff of the Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Rossa Mulcahy, in relation to this incident and the assistance our Defence Forces are providing.
'It's important now that our Gardai can carry out this investigation thoroughly.'
Mr O'Callaghan said: 'This was a really shocking incident.
'My thoughts are with everyone affected by the shooting and the community and families impacted, including those working at the scene.
'I would appeal to anyone who has any information to speak to the gardai and help with their investigations in any way that they can.'
He added: 'This is something we never want or expect to happen in our communities.
'Gun violence is very rare in Ireland, and I am determined that will remain the case.
'The area in Carlow is safe.
'We must now allow An Garda Siochana to investigate this incident fully.'
Local Fine Gael councillor Fergal Browne said people in the town had been left terrified
He said: 'I think it is all under control now, it seems the worst is over.
'People were obviously terrified, a bank holiday Sunday, going into town to do their shopping.
'People ran from the centre crying and upset.
'There was a bunch of foreign students in the area, who could not believe they were caught up in the middle of all of it.
'It's a busy spot. We launched a photographic exhibition there on Friday night in the shopping centre.'
Mr Browne added: 'There is lots of activity in the centre between people shopping and people working there, exhibitions.
'You could not make it up. It's very upsetting for everyone who was involved in it or who witnessed it.
'I was down there in the last hour and it seems to have calmed down a good bit now.'
Mr Browne said he wanted to thank all of the emergency services who had attended the scene.

Irish sports legend put an iPhone charger up his nose in cancer scam scheme
One of Ireland's biggest sporting legends has stunned the nation by admitting to scamming people out of millions by pretending he had cancer. DJ Carey, a celebrated hurling star, recently pleaded guilty to 10 counts of deception at Dublin's Criminal Courts of Justice for faking illness to solicit money under false pretences. As part of his ruse, the 54-year-old shared an image of himself lying in bed with an iPhone charging cable taped under his nose to mimic a nasal oxygen tube. The court also heard how Carey targeted victims using a series of letter templates. 'Basically they were letters looking for help. He had one [relating to] Revenue, and he would send them to people in business who had issues with Revenue and they would be sympathetic. He had one related to the banks, saying 'the banks were at him' and that was for people who he knew had issues with the banks,' a state witness said. 'Then he had the one about cancer and sympathy. He sent that out to people who he knew either had cancer themselves or were bereaved because of cancer. He was sending them out to everybody.' O'Brien was among the 13 complainants involved in the case. Carey's lawyer acknowledged he had lied about having cancer but argued he does suffer from genuine health conditions, including a heart condition that required surgery. Carey will be sentenced on 29 October and could face years in jail if convicted. It's a disgraceful end to a man hailed as a national icon and who has been described as the 'first superstar' of hurling – a stick-and-ball field game of ancient Gaelic origin. In a bizarre twist, his sister Catriona Carey (48) has also faced fraud-related charges. A trained accountant and former international hockey player for Ireland, she appeared in court earlier this year on multiple money laundering charges linked to a financial services firm she operated.

Kneecap fans at Glasgow gig rally around trio after festival slot cancelled
Kneecap fans gathered outside the band's gig in Glasgow have spoken of their support for the Irish rap trio despite them being axed from festival slots. The three members of Kneecap arrived at the O2 Academy in Glasgow on Tuesday evening ahead of their gig there, where they were greeted by pro-Palestinian demonstrators waving flags. Kneecap were axed from the line-up of TRNSMT in the city amid a row over an investigation by counter-terror police into Liam Og O hAnnaidh, who performs as Mo Chara, who is accused of terrorism offences related to a Hezbollah flag he allegedly held up on stage. The rap group, who perform in English and Irish, have been outspoken critics of the war in Gaza and claim the prosecution is linked to their views on Palestine. A number of fans and demonstrators spoke to the PA news agency outside the venue about their support for Kneecap, often declining to give their surnames. One called Meghan said she and her friend Amy had originally planned to go to TRNSMT before deciding to go to the Kneecap gig instead. She said it was 'disgusting' the band had been dropped from the line-up, adding: 'I think people are just scared for them to express proper problems in the world. 'They just want to shy away from it whereas Kneecap just come out and say it like it is.' Pro-Palestinian protester Naomi said: 'We're of the opinion the establishment is so under threat, they're having to look to ridiculous means to try and silence outspoken voices. 'We applaud Kneecap.' Kat, of the group Mothers against Genocide, said: 'They've been cancelled by money, haven't they? They've been cancelled by capitalism. 'So whoever booked them to play the O2 did absolutely the right thing.' Another fan called Asha, who has been to see the group 11 times, said: 'It's not like they're saying anything that's wrong, everything they're saying is absolutely correct. 'People don't like hearing the truth.' TRNSMT cancelled Kneecap's performance at the end of May over safety concerns from Police Scotland. The police force said it has a 'proportionate and considered policing plan' ahead of Kneecap's gig in Glasgow, which replaced their cancelled slot at the TRNSMT festival. As well as Kneecap's sold-out gig, Billie Eilish and Kendrick Lamar are also performing in Glasgow on Tuesday. In May, Scotland's First Minister John Swinney called for TRNSMT to cancel the performance on July 11, saying that 'organisers of TRNSMT have got to consider that issue'. O hAnnaidh was charged under the name Liam O'Hanna by the Metropolitan Police in May, over the alleged display of a Hezbollah flag at a gig, and appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on June 18. The furore led to calls from Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch for Glastonbury to cancel a performance from the Belfast rappers on June 28, which the festival organisers did not do. Ahead of the Glasgow gig, Superintendent Paul Douglas of Police Scotland said: 'We are aware of a number of events and concerts due to take place in the Greater Glasgow area in the week beginning Monday July 7. 'A proportionate and considered policing plan is in place within the city and we are working with a number of stakeholders to ensure the safety of all those attending these events and where possible minimise disruption to the people of Glasgow.'
