Ex-Cong MLA arrested from Delhi's five-star hotel

Hans India06-05-2025
New Delhi: Dharam Singh Chhokar, former Congress legislator from Haryana, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) team from one of the leading five-star hotels in the national capital on Monday.
The former MLA from Haryana's Samalkha has been arrested in a money laundering case worth Rs 1,500 crore.
Chhokar has been under the ED scanner for quite some time over illegal land dealings and duping the common public by fraudulent means.
The case allegedly pertains to a housing project in Gurugram, touted as one under Deendayal Awas Yojana, where he collected funds from the public but didn't deliver the housing units. Chhokar and his associates are accused of siphoning off public funds to the tune of Rs 1,500 crore for personal use.
According to ED sources, the former MLA and his realty firm duped and hoodwinked at least 2,000 investors, who put their money in his housing project.
The arrest of a former legislator in a filmy fashion also raises curiosity. The ED team arrested him from a leading five-star hotel in the national capital, after ascertaining his presence there.
Notably, Chhokar's son Sikandar was also arrested in a money laundering case earlier. Properties worth over Rs 44 crore linked to Chhokar were also seized by the ED team in December last year.
The move assumes significance as the two-time Samalkha legislator is considered close to former Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda. His arrest in the Rs 1500 money laundering case is set to send political temperatures soaring, with the BJP likely to step up the heat on Congress for 'sheltering' land grabbers and looters.
Notably, Robert Vadra, Priyanka Gandhi's husband, is already facing the ED heat in a Haryana land case and was also recently grilled by the agency for 'making a moolah' with 'illicit' land deals, during the
Congress regime.

Delhi Confidential: Sweet offering

DMK's Arun Nehru, a first-time MP from Perambalur, has a sweet trick to make new friends in Parliament. The 41-year-old is popular among Opposition benches for his delicious homemade chocolates that he generously distributes among his colleagues. Nehru is also promoting a small venture — Kocoatrait, which makes ethically sourced zero waste bean-to-bar chocolates — from his constituency. He says it's one way of supporting a sustainable and circular economy. Nehru's sweet offering has won him praise from the Treasury benches too. While he has introduced some NDA MPs to his homemade delights, the DMK leader says he is still amassing courage to go to the senior leaders. He recently offered a few chocolates in different flavours to Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, who said he relished each one of them. Overhaul On Cards Ridden by factionalism, the Haryana unit of Congress may soon get new District Congress Committee (DCC) presidents under the party's Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan (organisational rejuvenation campaign). The party had kickstarted the organisational overhaul in Gujarat, where it appointed new DCCs in June. It recently sent observers to Haryana and Madhya Pradesh to oversee a similar exercise. Sources in the Congress say they are not sure when the Madhya Pradesh appointments will be finalised, but in Haryana the revamp will begin in the next few days. The party high command has meticulously gone through suggestions made by the observers, and will soon announce the appointments. In party circles in Haryana, meanwhile, speculation is rife about which faction — former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda or party MP Selja Kumari — will have more people among the new DCCs. Old Office, New Role Senior forest service officer Gobind Sagar Bhardwaj, who was till recently a member secretary of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), returned to his former institution — the Wildlife Institute of India — as its director. Bhardwaj had earlier served as a scientist and faculty at the autonomous wildlife research body and has moved there after a one-year stint at NTCA.

2 women get 12-year rigorous imprisonment for heroin possession

Ludhiana: A local court sentenced two women drug peddlers, who are siblings, to 12-year rigorous imprisonment each for possession of around 1kg heroin. Special court judge Harvinder Singh also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh each on the two convicts. In default of payment of the fine, they will have to undergo further rigorous imprisonment for one year. On July 6, 2020, STF Phase Four, Mohali, police station booked Kiran Bala of Chuharpur, now a tenant at Mohalla Durgapuri, and Suman Bala of the same area, under the NDPS Act for possession of the contraband. As per the prosecution, on that date, SI Gurcharan Singh and a police party at Jassian Road area of Haibowal, received information that the sisters were to supply heroin to a customer from their house in Durgapuri. Later, the police party apprehended the duo riding a scooter driven by Kiran Bala. Upon checking, a large black polythene bag containing heroin was recovered. Police filed a case and arrested them. During trial, the accused pleaded false implication and stated that nothing was recovered from them. The defence counsel contended that the alleged independent witness, Ismile alias Yusuf, who allegedly witnessed the recovery, was not examined by the prosecution. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Elin Nordegren Show Off Her Huge Size In New Vacation Photos 33 Bridges Undo In the absence of his testimony, statements of official witnesses could not be believed. The court didn't find force in the submission of the defence counsel and held, "It is now settled law that the testimony of police officials is as good as that of independent witnesses. The statements of police officials cannot be discarded merely because of the colour of their office. Whenever the case of the prosecution is based only on the statements of police officials, the only precaution for the court is to scrutinise their testimony with some more care and caution. " The court also turned down the submission of the accused about false implication in the case. The court observed that in view of the law laid down by the Supreme Court in the aforesaid case and in view of the facts, possession of the accused is fully proved on record, and they failed to give a satisfactory explanation for that. "Moreover, there appears to be no justification for the police to falsely implicate the accused, from whose possession a huge quantity of contraband was recovered. It is highly improbable that such a huge quantity of intoxicant material would be arranged by the police officials in order to falsely implicate the accused," the court remarked.
