
Family carries coffin into KZN bank to protest delayed funeral payout
North Coast Courier reports that, according to the family, they filed the claim last Wednesday and were initially told payment would be processed within 48 hours. They were later informed funds would only be available by August 22, nearly a month later.
Feeling helpless, the family made the drastic decision to take the deceased to the bank to highlight the emotional and financial burden caused by the delay.
The incident shocked shoppers and staff, drawing concern and sympathy from onlookers.
A 43-year-old woman, sister of the 25-year-old deceased, expressed deep disappointment in the bank.
'We have to bury my sister this Saturday. Since they say they will only pay on the 22nd of next month, we brought her body to prove she has passed. I am worried because my whole family is insured with this bank.'
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred in KwaDukuza. In 2019, a family from Madundube took a body to an Old Mutual branch under similar circumstances. Old Mutual said the claim had already been processed but acknowledged delays and apologised.
KwaDukuza Mall management distanced itself from the matter.
'This was a private dispute between the family and Capitec Bank, which is an independent tenant operating within the mall premises,' said mall manager Siyabonga Tembe.
Capitec Bank had not responded to requests for comment at the time of publishing.

IOL reported on Friday that the murder of the female public prosecutor in front of her child and partner has been described as an attack on the rule of law. Tracy Brown, a regional court prosecutor, was shot and killed in front of her house at Lotton Street, Young Park in Gqeberha on Thursday after four men alighted from a white Polo vehicle and fired multiple shots at her vehicle. Nqola said protectors of the justice system in South Africa are not safe. 'This is indeed a tragedy where the protectors of our criminal justice system are not safe anymore. This is unacceptable and no stone should be left unturned to bring the culprits to book,' he said. According to reports, Brown was ambushed and shot multiple times by four armed assailants while sitting in her car, in full view of her partner and child. 'The brutal nature of this assassination-style killing is deeply disturbing and represents a direct attack on the justice system and those who serve it with dedication and courage,' he said. This incident follows the tragic murder of Elona Sombulula, a court official at the Engcobo Magistrate's Court, in April. The parliamentary committee is 'gravely concerned' by what appears to be a pattern of targeted violence against officials within the justice sector. 'The murder of Ms Brown is not only a devastating loss to her family and colleagues, but an attack on the rule of law in South Africa. Prosecutors serve at the forefront of our fight against crime and corruption. When they are targeted, it threatens the foundations of our constitutional democracy. 'The committee sends its heartfelt condolences to Ms Brown's loved ones and colleagues during this painful time. The committee also calls on law enforcement agencies to prioritise the investigation and ensure that those responsible are swiftly apprehended and face the full might of the law.' Nqola said the portfolio committee will engage with the Department of Justice and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on urgent measures to enhance the safety and security of prosecutors and court officials across the country.

Religious leader's murder shocks Benoni community
A lone brightly coloured floral arrangement stands next to the curb in Caledon Street in Actonville, in Benoni, Ekurhuleni – it serves as a stark reminder of where guru Roy Naidoo (66) was murdered on Wednesday. Steeling herself, one of Naidoo's sisters, Queenie, places a fresh rose next to the bouquet, paying her respects to a man she said served his community until his final moments. Benoni City Times reports that Anton Koen of NoJack Vehicle Tracking said private security, local SAPS, as well as members of the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) responded to the incident, which he described as gruesome. Paul Apicella, from the neighbouring Paarl Street, said that the suspect had been walking the streets that morning, wielding what he described as a panga. 'The man was swinging the weapon around, screaming and ranting,' said Apicella. 'Pedestrians could be heard screaming and running in all directions. It was chaos, people locked themselves in their homes out of fear.' Shanwill da Costa, a local youth who had been living under the mentorship of the Tamil priest for the past four years, said that at about 13:30, Naidoo approached his assailant to calm the situation. 'Uncle Roy was standing in the road next to him, speaking in his characteristic calm manner. It seemed like the situation was simmering down,' said Da Costa. 'The suspect started swinging the weapon, and the next minute, Uncle Roy was on the ground. I tried to help, but could not get close enough. I felt incredibly helpless.' Koen confirmed that after the incident, the suspect fled into his home, barricading himself inside. 'Following a brief exchange of fire, SAPS members tactically breached the property,' he said. 'The man was found on his bed with a gunshot wound. He was arrested and taken to a local hospital for treatment.' Sitting in Naidoo's living room, Queenie said that her brother's home and Ashram (temple) have, for more than two decades, served as a beacon of hope for the community. 'Roy has served as a spiritual leader for 45 years, assisting weary souls with guidance and care,' she said. 'Despite not being in good health, he sourced food donations from local businesses to provide those in need with a weekly meal and a diligently packed food hamper. His life was dedicated to caring for everyone regardless of faith and culture.' She said that Roy's two children, as well as his surviving five siblings, are grappling to come to terms with his death. 'It would have been easier to accept his physical departure if it were due to natural causes,' she said. 'This burden is too heavy to carry. We leave Roy's attacker in the hands of God, for only He can judge.' A funeral service will be held at Naidoo's Caledon Street home tomorrow (August 2). South Africans are known for their resilience which is confirmed by a survey that shows they still work hard for their financial freedom. Employed South Africans are working hard for their financial freedom according to a new survey that shows their resilience and renewed sense of optimism despite the persistent pressures of a challenging economic climate. According to the 2025 Old Mutual Savings & Investment Monitor (OMSIM), many consumers are not only hopeful about the future but are also taking deliberate steps to improve their financial wellbeing. The OMSIM is an annual study that tracks the financial attitudes, behaviours and priorities of working South Africans earning a minimum of R8 000 per month. It serves as a barometer for the country's financial health, capturing the lived experiences and evolving behaviours of the middle-income market. The 2025 findings tell a story of adaptation, resourcefulness and a steady shift from crisis management to more forward-looking financial behaviour. ALSO READ: South Africans experiencing less financial stress, but still under pressure — survey Finances still difficult for working South Africans despite progress Vuyokazi Mabude, head of knowledge and insights at Old Mutual, says this year's report is a reflection of a turning point. 'The results show that while life is still difficult for many people, working South Africans are making tangible progress. 'There is a notable increase in income, confidence and an entrepreneurial spirit, particularly among the youth. People are taking control of their finances, seeking out additional income sources, managing their debt more intentionally and placing greater importance on saving,' she says. One of the standout findings is the marked improvement in financial sentiment, Mabude points out. A remarkable 75% of respondents believe their personal financial situation will improve in the next six months, the highest recorded since the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. 'This level of optimism is most pronounced among the Gen Z market, with 89% anticipating improvement in their finances. Confidence in South Africa's economic direction is also improving, although consumers are still cautious. 'The number of people who expressed confidence in the economy has grown to 42%, building on the slow but consistent recovery seen since 2023.' ALSO READ: Survey shows how economic distress erodes South Africans' savings culture Income of working South Africans improving as well She says alongside improving sentiment, income growth is becoming more evident, where 44% of respondents reported earning more than they did a year ago, with income increases especially common among the youth (55%) and those in higher income brackets (57%). It is clear from the survey that South Africans are not simply working one job anymore, with 'poly-jobbing' the new normal now. The report shows that side hustling and entrepreneurship have become deeply embedded in the financial lives of working South Africans. The number of 'poly-jobbers', who earn income from multiple sources, remains high at 57%, rising to 75% among the youth between the ages of 18 and 29. In fact, Mabude says, the report shows that almost half of working South Africans (48%) now own or part-own a business. 'This entrepreneurial spirit is not just a trend. It is proving to be a vital coping mechanism and a source of financial empowerment. People are using their skills and passions to diversify their income streams, often out of necessity, but increasingly also as a means to build wealth.' South Africans are struggling with debt and gambling. Debt continues to feature prominently in household financial management, but it is encouraging that 57% of respondents say they reduced their debt compared to a year ago. A growing number (32%) proactively engaged with creditors to renegotiate repayment terms. However, there are areas of concern, Mabude says, pointing out that 52% of working South Africans reported that they gamble, with 40% admitting they do so in hope of covering expenses or repaying debt. 'This trend suggests that while some are making proactive choices, others remain vulnerable and are turning to risky behaviour to bridge financial gaps.' The report also shows some lag when it comes to long-term savings. Although South Africans continue to show strong short-term saving habits with an average of 22% of household income being allocated to savings, retirement planning remains on the downside. While 96% agree that saving for retirement is important, only 28% made it a top priority. 'It is also encouraging to note that fewer people are prematurely accessing investments or retirement funds, while informal savings vehicles, such as stokvels remain popular and trusted,' Mabude says. 'While challenges remain, mainly due to the cost of living, OMSIM 2025 shows a trajectory of optimism looking into the future. 'The report shows that South Africans are not passively waiting for change, but instead are actively creating it by embracing entrepreneurship, making smarter money decisions and seeking out alternative ways to achieve some level of financial freedom. 'Every year, OMSIM gives us deep insight into how people are coping and adapting when it comes to their finances. This year, more than ever, we see an encouraging collective step forward,' Mabude says.
