Impala plans to close Ontario palladium mine due to low prices

Yahoo09-07-2025
THUNDER BAY — Impala Platinum Holding Ltd. plans to end production at its Lac des Iles mine in northwestern Ontario at the end of May next year due to low palladium prices.
The South African company currently employs about 750 people at the mine north of Thunder Bay, Ont.
The operation includes underground and surface mining operations and a concentrator.
Impala Canada says due to a prolonged period of low palladium prices the business is not generating the cash flow required to sustain the operation.
In a message to employees last week, Impala Canada chief executive Tim Hill said there is still plenty of work to be done in the operation and responsible closure of the mine.
He thanked workers for their commitment and safety performance.

First Quantum reports progress at Panama copper mine, posts profit

TORONTO - First Quantum Minerals Ltd. says shipments of copper concentrate have begun leaving a contentious mine in Panama that had been shuttered, boosting its second-quarter results. The Toronto-based miner posted $18 million in net earnings attributable to shareholders during the second-quarter, reversing a year-earlier loss of $46 million. That amounted to diluted net earnings of two cents per share compared to a loss of six cents per share a year earlier. Sales revenues were $1.23 billion during the three months ended June 30, about the same as the same quarter a year earlier. First Quantum suspended production at the Cobre Panama mine in November 2023 following widespread protests and a court ruling that found the agreement with the government covering the mine was unconstitutional. In May, the Panamanian government approved a 'preservation and safe management plan' for the open-pit mine and last month, the company began exporting copper concentrate that had been on site since the mine's closure. Whitecap, fresh off Veren deal, reports higher production in Q2

CALGARY — Whitecap Resources Inc., fresh off its $15-billion combination with Veren Inc., has reported higher revenues and oil and gas production in its latest quarterly results. The Calgary-based oil and gas producer says net income was $310.6 million for the three months ended June 30, up from $244.5 million during the same 2024 quarter. That amounted to 33 cents per diluted share compared with 41 cents per share a year earlier. Petroleum and natural gas revenues were $1.37 billion, an increase from $980.4 million during last year's second quarter. Whitecap produced 292,754 barrels of oil equivalent per day during the period compared to 177,314. The all-stock transaction with Veren closed in mid-May and Whitecap is now the biggest landholder in the Montney and Duvernay shales and the second-largest oil producer in Saskatchewan.
