Jio-Allianz, Fairfax-backed Valueattics Re set to shake up India's Rs 50,000-cr reinsurance market

Time of Indiaa day ago
India's reinsurance sector is set for disruption as
Jio-Allianz
and Valueattics Re-a JV between Fairfax's Prem Watsa and
Kamesh Goyal
's Oben Ventures-enter the market, challenging the dominance of state-run
GIC Re
in the country's ₹50,000-crore reinsurance business.
GIC Re currently has a 51% market share, while the rest is distributed among 11 foreign reinsurance branches. On Friday,
Jio Financial Services
(JFSL) and
Allianz Group
(Allianz), through its wholly owned subsidiary Allianz Europe BV, announced they have entered into a binding agreement to form a 50:50 domestic reinsurance joint venture in the insurance market in India.

The two companies also entered into a non-binding agreement for setting up equally owned joint ventures for both general and life insurance businesses in India.

Regulatory norms such as mandatory cession and order of preference could benefit the new entrants, giving them an edge over other reinsurers. Regulations mandate Indian insurers to cede 4% of each policy to GIC Re.
This would be Allianz's third reinsurance entity after its existing branches under the Foreign Reinsurer Branch (FRB) and International Financial Services Centre Insurance Office (IIO) regimes. This proposed company would be an India-incorporated entity with a paid-up capital of a minimum ₹200 crore.
While the other two reinsurance entities are focused on speciality reinsurance and certain lines of risks, the third entity, which will be an Indian reinsurer would have a standalone balance sheet and the flexibility to do treaty and facultative reinsurance.
GIC Re, the national reinsurer, has long been the anchor of the domestic reinsurance market. In 2023-24, a total reinsurance premium of ₹62,113 crore was collected by Indian reinsurer GIC Re and foreign reinsurance branches (FRBs). About 81% of this business came from within India, which is ₹50,553 crore. Of this Indian business, GIC Re handled around 51%, while the remaining 49% was done by the foreign reinsurance branches including global reinsurers like Lloyd's.
Reinsurers operating from within India, like Jio-Allianz and
Valueattics Re
could get preferential access over cross-border reinsurers in the order of preference mandated by IRDAI. As per IRDAI guidelines, every Indian general insurer must cede 4% of their sum insured on each policy to GIC Re- the Indian reinsurer under compulsory cession rules.
While GIC enjoys 4% mandatory cession, this is subject to annual review. Also, reinsurers operating from within India, like Jio-Allianz and Valueattics Re, could enjoy preferential access over cross-border reinsurers in the order of preference mandated by IRDAI.
The entry of Jio-Allianz could bring the scale, digital reach, and capital heft of Reliance Industries, while Valueattics Re, headed by Canadian-Indian billionaire Prem Watsa, entered the
Indian reinsurance market
in March this year and is expected to tap into Fairfax's global expertise and balance sheet strength, further accelerating competition in the domestic landscape.

Even the surrendered Naxalites have been trained by the company in industry-oriented skills and absorbed them in jobs to aid the process of integrating them in the mainstream of society. Further, this industrial revolution has provided a never-before boost to the development of Gadchiroli. According to B Prabhakaran, 'July 22, 2025 is going to be recorded in the history of Gadchiroli as well as Maharashtra in golden letters. With the foundation stone being laid for Vidarbha's mega Integrated Steel Plant at Konsari in Gadchiroli district, a step is being taken towards realising the historic dream of making Gadchiroli a steel hub of the country. 'Lloyds Metals and Energy Ltd is proud of being the driver of the industrial revolution here. After successful green operations of iron ore mines at Surjagarh, commissioning of DRI plant and pellet plant at Konsari, now a giant leap of faith is being taken in the form of Integrated Steel Plant. Technical textiles is a potential area for investments in T.N. by Taiwan companies: official

Technical textiles is a potential sector that can see significant investments in Tamil Nadu by Taiwan companies, said V. Arun Roy, Secretary, Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce Department, Tamil Nadu. Speaking at the Tamil Nadu – Taiwan Technical Textiles Partnership Summit, organised in Coimbatore on Monday by the Confederation of Indian Industry, Tiruppur Exporters Association, and the Tamil Nadu government, he said Tamil Nadu has a large investment from Taiwan companies in electronics and footwear sectors. Since 2021, the Tamil Nadu government and Taiwan companies have signed 21 MoUs for $ 1.4 billion investment in the State. Technical textiles can be the next potential sector. The PM MITRA Park at Virudhunagar will have dedicated area for technical textiles apart from plug and play facilities for technical textiles. Indian and Taiwan companies should look at investing in the park. Garment exports from Tiruppur and Coimbatore districts grew 20% in 2024-2025 to touch ₹45,000 crores and registered 12 % growth in the first quarter of the current fiscal. The exports are expected to increase 15% this year. However, 'future of the textile industry lies beyond the cotton sector. We should tap opportunities in technical textiles and MMF. It offers more opportunities in value addition,' he said. Director of Handlooms, Tamil Nadu, Maheshwari Ravikumar said the Tamil Nadu government was in the process of issuing an order to offer capital subsidy for the processing sector; will introduce courses in technical textiles in polytechnics and industrial training institutes, and was studying the recommendations submitted in a report by Wazir Advisors to promote sportswear and athleisure production in the State. Over 55 one-to-one business meetings were held in Coimbatore on Monday between Indian companies and Taiwan companies as a part of the Summit.

India's listed startups raised over ₹44,000 crore from public markets in FY25: report

Venture-backed Indian startups raised over ₹44,000 crore ($5.3 billion) in FY25 from public markets via IPOs, FPOs, and QIPs, marking a structural shift in startup fundraising lifecycle in India. According to investment bank Rainmaker Group's RainGauge Index FY25 Annual Update, public markets outpaced private capital for late-stage fundraising, solidifying their role as the dominant source of growth capital. The money raised from public markets was two times more than private late-stage capital. The year also saw a record ₹20,000+ Crore in secondary exits as PE/VC firms like Peak XV and TPG harvested early bets through block and bulk deals. 'FY25 didn't just test India's startup listings, it matured them,' said Kashyap Chanchani, Managing Partner, The Rainmaker Group. 'The public market has become the preferred playground for India's breakout companies. We've now seen the full arc - the IPO frenzy, the valuation winter, and now a clear re-rating driven by fundamentals. This is the age of seasoning. The market is no longer listening to stories, it's pricing in substance. India's innovation economy has hit a new gear, one where companies with predictable earnings, durable moats, and institutional-grade governance will dominate,' he added. The report also noted that despite the early-year correction and record FII outflows [around ₹78,000 Crore in Q1], foreign investors returned strongly by Q4, driven by rate-cut expectations and India's steady macro indicators. The year witnessed Zomato joining the NIFTY50 and SENSEX, Swiggy entering the NIFTY Next 50, and Nykaa, PB Fintech, Ola Electric inducted into the NIFTY MidCap150. 'With IPOs no longer delivering inflated valuations or easy exits, startups will have to align with public market expectations much earlier in their lifecycle,' said a statement from the company. 'Sector-specific valuation guardrails are firmly in place with two-year forward EV/EBITDA multiples now providing structured lenses across internet, SaaS, BFSI, and consumer brands. Analyst-grade metrics, unit economics, transparency, and sustainable growth stories will need to be baked in from day one. Startups must now build with capital efficiency, narrative credibility, and governance readiness and not just valuation hype,' it further read.
