Premier: Free Tertiary Education Scheme's long-term sustainability to be prioritised with any expansion plans
MIRI (July 23): Any expansion of Sarawak's Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) must be carefully deliberated to ensure its long-term sustainability, said Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
The Premier said this in response to questions from students during the town hall in conjunction with Sarawak Day here yesterday, where FTES was enthusiastically discussed.
Abang Johari explained the tertiary institutions that will offer free education to Sarawakians next year are state-owned.
'We want to send 'Anak Sarawak' to these institutions and the latter's tuition fees will be taken care of by the state government.
'If we brazenly expand the initiative to other institutions, particularly those owned by the federal government, it might not be possible because they don't offer that,' he said.
He pointed out that the state government decided to introduce the programme after improving its revenue from RM6 billion to over RM12 billion as this would ensure the programme could be a long-term one.
'Now that we are able to implement it, we are doing it carefully to make sure all Sarawakians can benefit from it,' he added.
On his hope for the future of Sarawak and its development, Abang Johari said the younger generation should prepare themselves to lead.
'Self-confidence, discipline, social interaction skills, and the ability to work as a team are the four essential criteria that will shape Sarawak's future leaders,' he said.
Abang Johari is seen in a group photo with the town hall attendees.
These qualities are important not only for individual success, but also for building a resilient society that can adapt to rapid changes in technology, economy, and global dynamics, he stated.
Abang Johari stressed that Sarawak's ongoing transformation agenda, particularly in digital economy, green energy (methanol production), and the recent launch of the KETEQ AI nano chip are among the government's efforts to improve and upgrade the state's economy to attract young Sarawakian talents to return to the state.
He also reminded students that while artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most widely used technologies today and has the potential to ease many aspects of work, it must be approached with caution.
'Like deepfakes, imagine President Donald Trump speaks fluent Iban, it would be both absurd and alarming,' he said.
He emphasised that using AI effectively requires not only a solid understanding of the technology, but also a strong ethical foundation and critical thinking skills as misusing AI could negatively impact society.
The town hall session moderated by Deputy Minister in the Premier's Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala was attended by over 1,500 including ministers and deputy ministers; students from 17 secondary schools and 11 public tertiary institutions; and representatives from 20 non-governmental organisations.

Premier: DBKU, MBKS must embrace digital economy vision to stay relevant
Uggah witnesses the flag-raising ceremony during the 37th Kuching City Day celebration. – Photo by Mohd Faisal Ahmad KUCHING (Aug 1): Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) and Kuching South City Council (MBKS) must align their policies and operations with Sarawak's digital economy vision. Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stressed local authorities must evolve in line with rapid technological advancements. 'I urge DBKU and MBKS to embrace this aspiration so they remain significant and relevant to the digital needs of the people. 'They must transform their engagement and public perception, including in terms of policy, delivery, monitoring, and evaluation,' he in a speech for the 37th Kuching City Day celebration at Pangkalan Sapi, Petra Jaya today. Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas delivered the speech for the celebration themed 'Smart City of Unity, Embracing A Sustainable Future'. Abang Johari pointed out that Sarawak is positioning itself as a key digital economy player in the region, with the Sarawak Digital Economy Action Plan 2030 (SDE 2030) laying the groundwork for inclusive, responsible, and sustainable socioeconomic growth. 'To achieve this goal, the Sarawak government launched the SDE 2030, which is a key component of the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030). It aims to shift the entire economy and society from a conventional economy to a technology-driven sustainable economy,' he said. He said the plan focuses on five strategic pillars — economic growth priorities, digital business development, public sector and services transformation, frontier technology adoption, and strengthening digital economy fundamentals including governance, cybersecurity, talent development, digital skills, research, and entrepreneurship. He said the government places strong emphasis on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, and 5G to boost productivity, improve efficiency, drive innovation, and enhance quality of life in Sarawak. Highlighting the importance of city councils in this transformation, Abang Johari said DBKU and MBKS can play a vital role in implementing the state's Sustainability Blueprint 2030. 'On May 29, we launched the Sustainability Blueprint 2030, which outlines 10 strategic thrusts, 48 strategies, and 111 actionable plans to drive Sarawak's transition to a green and low-carbon economy. 'Sarawak is determined to lead Malaysia and the region in climate action and sustainable development. This is not Sarawak's journey as this is our contribution to the future generations. 'As for DBKU and MBKS, both of the cities can play a critical role in implementing the Sarawak Sustainable Blueprint 2030 by aligning the policies, urban planning and community programmes. This blueprint may also be integrated into Local Development Plans, Low-Carbon Initiatives in Urban Areas, Waste and Water Management Innovations, Community Education and Engagement, Nature-Based and Carbon Projects, Green Economy and Innovation, and Digital and Smart City,' he said. Abang Johari also underscored the importance of community involvement in local council initiatives, saying citizens have a role in shaping their surroundings. 'We should participate in local council events, provide feedback, and support the local authority agenda. By doing so, we help shape the future of our neighbourhoods. 'Local authorities are the backbone of a well-functioning community. Without them, our towns and cities would not run smoothly. Let us appreciate their efforts and work hand-in-hand with them to create a better living environment for everyone,' he added. The Premier also congratulated Kuching North Datuk Bandar Datuk Hilmy Othman and Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng for their leadership, and thanked all DBKU and MBKS staff for their dedication towards making Kuching a liveable and loveable city. He also paid tribute to former mayors whose leadership contributed to the city's progress: Datuk Song Swee Guan, Datuk Chan Seng Khai, Datuk Chong Ted Tsiung, Datuk James Chan, Datu Dr Yusoff Hanifah, Datu Awang Ehsan Joini, Datuk Madehi Kolek, Datu Abdul Hamid Yusof, Datuk Abang Atei, Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai, and Datu Junaidi Reduan. Sarawak business group hails 13MP aims to boost state growth, clean energy
KUCHING: The core elements of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) are aligned with Sarawak's goals of accelerating growth under its post-Covid development strategy, says the Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI). Its secretary general Libat Langub ( pic ) welcomed the special emphasis on elevating Sabah and Sarawak as Malaysia's competitive regional hubs for sustainable energy. "The initiative includes the development of the Sarawak Hydrogen Hub, aimed at strengthening the energy infrastructure in Sarawak. "This demonstrates the Federal Government's commitment and recognition of Sarawak's significant role in national investments and that Sarawak is poised to realise the country's vision of becoming a high-value regional clean energy leader," he said on Friday (Aug 1). Libat said the energy hubs were expected to create new high-value jobs for Sarawakians. "We hope the Dayak business community will actively look for and participate in business opportunities generated by new industries from these energy hubs," he said. As an indigenous business chamber, DCCI also supported the strengthening of socioeconomic development for Sarawak's bumiputra community under the 13MP. This includes expanding business opportunities through the provision of commercial premises, access to financing, entrepreneurship training and mentoring programmes to Sarawak bumiputra entrepreneurs. "In this connection, we urge the government to ensure that access to these business opportunities reaches the targeted group and benefits them. 'A multi-faceted approach involving government initiatives, dedicated programmes and structural support is crucial," Libat said. He proposed the implementation of outreach strategies to identify and engage potential bumiputra entrepreneurs, particularly in Sarawak's rural areas, as well as monitoring and evaluation of programmes to benefit them. "Skills training programmes for rural communities must be intensified so that economic growth can be shared inclusively," he added. Libat also said the 13MP's focus on basic infrastructure such as roads, water supply, electricity and digitalisation initiatives was timely and much needed to balance development between urban and rural areas. "Improved road connectivity is a game-changer for rural development in Sarawak, promising substantial economic and social benefits," he said.
