17 Celebrities Who — Let's Face It — Kinda Destroyed Their Own Careers

Buzz Feed12-04-2025
Warning: This post mentions drug addiction and rape.
There's something both fascinating and tragic about watching a celebrity throw away their own success — especially when the full story reveals they weren't entirely acting alone.
While some stars let their egos and bad decisions wreck their careers, others were steered toward self-sabotage by toxic relationships, industry pressures, or misguided attempts at reinvention.
Earlier this year, I highlighted nearly two dozen celebrities who were entirely f*cked over by Hollywood. The flip side of this would be stars who went into self-destruct mode and fumbled their careers as a result.
I recently came across a viral post on r/AskReddit that asked users to name Hollywood stars who had "squandered their own careers." Some of the most infamous cases involved celebrities who self-destructed — whether on social media or on set — turning their reputations to ash and derailing years of hard work.
But not every downfall was the result of reckless behavior. For many, especially women, personal choices that had little to do with their public personas ended up costing them opportunities they might have otherwise seized.
Whether it was a high-profile meltdown, a career-killing scandal, or a seemingly small decision that had irreversible consequences, these celebrities all played a role in their own downfall — but not always without a push from outside forces:
Note: these entries have been edited for length/clarity.
1. "Emile Hirsch after he choked an executive at Sundance."
2. " Katie Holmes had so many projects until she got with Tom Cruise."
3. " Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing, Ferris Bueller's Day Off) was sensitive about her large nose because of her school years and early acting career. With Dirty Dancing being a hit, she finally had the money to get a rhinoplasty. Unfortunately, Hollywood disagreed and felt she lost her distinctive look; she was deemed too plain for the big screen and couldn't build off her success. She continued working but didn't get to have a career as a leading lady."
4. "Ja Rule turned down an offer to remain in the Fast & Furious franchise after the original movie because he thought they were lowballing him with their offer. After he turned them down, they wrote in a new character to fill the slot in the script that Ja Rule would have had and gave the part to Ludacris."
5. "Lillo Brancato. He broke out in A Bronx Tale, had a good supporting character in Crimson Tide, and had a recurring role in The Sopranos. He became addicted to heroin and was involved in a home invasion robbery where his accomplice murdered the off-duty police officer living there. Promising career right down the toilet like in Trainspotting."
6. "Lea Michele. The lead in the Funny Girl revival was hers for the taking, but she spent her entire career being mean and difficult to work with, and now — shocker — no one wants to work with her."
"With her talent, she should have taken Broadway by storm and scored the lead in a hit movie musical or two.
And this isn't about her being more or less talented than anyone else in the Glee cast, but her voice and acting style were made for musical theatre."
– u/DramaBrat
7. "I used to love Boy Meets World, and based on interviews they did after the show, they all thought they would be big, but none of them got any work for a while. I think they're all working now in various fields, but I'm surprised they didn't immediately shoot in popularity once the show ended."
"I heard an interview with Danielle Fishel where she basically said that at the time the show ended, she had a big ego and thought she was too good for daytime soaps, but no one else wanted to hire her (I'm paraphrasing something I read years ago, so don't quote me)."
– u/pink_highlight
8. "Charlie Sheen could have been one of the greats. Went from Platoon in 1986 to Wall Street in 1987, and then he shot his fiancé and future wife of John Travolta, Kelly Preston, in the arm "accidentally" by 1990. And then a series of ups and downs before we all saw the unraveling into tiger blood and 'winning' two decades later.
9. "Pretty sure Gina Carano squandered her career."
"She made a few movies but was really breaking out in The Mandaloria n as Cara Dune. It looked like she was gonna be the main character in a spin-off Disney+ series until she started spouting off stuff on Twitter that basically (if I heard correctly) got her fired from The Mandalorian and canceled her new show before it started.
She may be able to recover, but time will tell."
– u/barrett_g
10. "Katherine Heigl was everywhere, and then gone. She bad-mouthed so many people, writers, shows, and movies that it was inevitable."
11. "Kevin Spacey. You know why."
12. "Not an actor, but Mike Richards destroyed his career by seemingly giving himself the Jeopardy hosting job.
"Everyone was annoyed when he was announced as host, then his past comments came out, so he stepped down from the hosting gig and now he's also out as executive producer."
– u/OrangeTree81
13. " Michael Richards from Seinfeld. But at least he's not at the top of the Google results anymore."
14. "James Franco. I'm surprised no one brought him up yet."
15. "I'd argue Shia Labeouf, but despite everything that has happened he still seems to remain active."
16. " Joe Son, the guy who played Random Task in Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. He was arrested for vandalism, and then when the police took a DNA sample, they found he was also guilty in a rape case several years prior. And then he killed his cellmate, so he'll be in jail until the 2030s."
17. "Crispin Glover. After Back To The Future, he could have built a great career, except he was really a strange person and not very good at hiding it. Though he has been able to consistently find work in low-budget/indie projects, he could have been an A-lister if he weren't such an oddball."
18. "Cas Anvar. He was the main character in The Expans e, a SciFi show that has been skyrocketing in popularity since being picked up by Amazon. He had credible accusations of sexual harassment leveled against him that ended with him being removed from the show."

21 Things Kids These Days Will Never Understand

Recently, u/Hidden_lust__ asked r/AskReddit, "What's something kids today will never understand?" And we thought we'd share some of the top responses. "Going into a phone booth, especially when you're a kid, just to jiggle the coin return in hopes of scoring a nickel or dime so you can buy some candy. My cousin Brenda beat me to a phone booth at the beach & got $1.15. She was the first rich person I ever knew." "Spending hours curating the perfect mix CD — carefully choosing the songs, getting the order just right, and writing the track list in Sharpie like it was a love letter. If someone made you a burned CD… That was real love." "Limewire. God, I gave one of my laptops a wild amount of viruses with it but I got to listen to Simple Plan on my mp3 player, so it was all worth it." "Renting a VHS from Blockbuster." "Performing surgery on a cassette tape to get it working again." "Dial-up internet: The screechy connection tones, and being kicked off the internet because someone picked up the landline phone." "That weird, magical era where you made plans, kept them, and just showed up — no texts, no tracking, no group chats. Just: 'See you at four' and somehow… everyone did." "Needing to have a quarter (or a dime if you're THAT old) on you just in case you needed to call home with a payphone." "The desperation to get snacks from the kitchen quickly or going to the bathroom fast during a commercial break while watching an episode you waited all week for. Bonus points if your sibling screamed, 'it's back!' when you were still out of the room and you had to run back, lol. "Getting a new phone number every time you moved." "The peace of not having a cell phone." "Actually knowing phone numbers. Like your parents number, the numbers of several friends... Shit, I still know some of those numbers even today." "That sacred moment when your favourite song came on the radio, and you had to run to hit 'record' on the cassette player, hoping no one spoke over the intro." "How before Google you had to look through an encyclopedia in the library or in a large home collection and possibly spend hours looking, only to still not find what you're searching for. Yes, back then, if your parents and/or teachers didn't know the answer to something, and you couldn't find it in the library, then you really had no idea how to figure it out then." "The Dewey decimal system and the physical card catalogue at the library." "How exciting it was when Pong was invented. We could interact with the square ball on the TV! It was incredible! Being able to control the paddle (in that ever exciting up and down thing it did, lol) just seemed to be so futuristic." "We were really poor growing up and couldn't afford to buy VHS tapes so my parents would tape Wonderful World of Disney every Saturday night." "Playing outside all day and inventing your own games, using your imagination and without needing money." "People smoking literally everywhere. Airplanes, restaurants, hotels, even hospitals. So much that old technology like typewriters or radios are still often covered in nicotine residue when you find them. It's so rare now that when I come across a smoker, I can't get past the stench." "Blowing into a game cartridge like your life depended on it, praying it would finally load so you could play Mario before your sibling claimed the TV." "When I was a kid, if one of my parents was expecting an important phone call, it meant I wasn't allowed to use the internet." H/T to u/Hidden_lust__ and r/AskReddit for having the discussion! Jason Statham Shows Incredible Stunt Prowess At 57 By Diving Off A Yacht, And Vin Diesel And Ludacris Have Thoughts

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Everyone in the world knows Jason Statham as an action star leading films like Crank, The Meg and The Beekeeper in addition to his part within the Fast And Furious franchise... but did you know that he has a serious background as a diver? Years before his breakout in Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels and even before his modeling career (yes, he had a modeling career), Statham spent a dozen years on Britain's National Swimming Squad and competed in multiple events in the 1990 Commonwealth Games. Knowing this, it's weirdly not at all surprising to see photos of the actor performing some extreme dives off of a yacht in a new Instagram post filled with vacation pictures – but one nonetheless has to appreciate the love shared in the comments section by some of his Fast & Furious castmates. Check out the gallery of photos below: If you didn't know about Jason Statham's history as a legit diver, you probably could have figured out that he has some kind of background in the sport from that first photo. The guy might be decades removed from his heyday in the pool, but that shot demonstrates the form of an Olympian (and kudos to the uncredited photographer!). As for the reactions... I think you can also probably guess what Vin Diesel had to say about this collection of vacation photos. The actor doesn't comment on Jason Statham's diving prowess or skills while operating a jet ski. Instead, he focuses on who his co-star is hanging out with and cites what he has long said (and oft-repeated) is the core theme of the Fast & Furious franchise: Family… Perfectly on brand. Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, on the other hand, left a comment suggesting that he is well aware of Jason Statham's background as an athlete and complemented his maintained skills with three words of adulation and a pair of knowing emojis: Still got it 🏊‍♂️ 🫡 It's fun to see Jason Statham, Vin Diesel and Ludacris interacting on social media... but when will we get to see Deckard Shaw, Dominic Torretto, or Tej Parker back together again? That question doesn't have a firm answer quite yet, but at the very least we do now have a release window for Fast X: Part 2 / Fast And Furious 11. At the end of last month, Diesel attended an event in Southern California and told the audience gathered there that Universal Pictures is targeting an April 2027 release date – meaning that production will likely begin at the end of next year or the start of 2026. Director Louis Leterrier is back in the director's chair after helming Fast X, and Diesel has made three promises about the sequel: the action will return to Los Angeles, the story will return to be about car culture, and Dom will have an on-screen reunion with Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker's character, who has not appeared in a Fast & Furious movie since Walker's death during the production of Furious 7). The film will also need to provide a conclusion to the many cliffhangers in the previous chapter, including the return of Dwayne Johnson's Luke Hobbes; the resurrection of Gal Gadot's Gisele Yashar; the fate of the flight that had Tej, Roman (Tyrese Gibson), Han (Sung Kang), and Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel) on board; and the peril faced by Dom and his son below a breaking dam. Stay tuned for more updates about the project here on CinemaBlend, and check out our Upcoming Action Movie guide to learn about all of the ass-kicking projects on the horizon.
