Bayeux Tapestry to return to England for first time in more than 900 years

The tapestry will arrive in the UK at the British Museum next year on loan from France.
In return, the British Museum will loan the Sutton Hoo collection, the Lewis Chessmen and other items to France.
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said: 'The Bayeux Tapestry is one of the most iconic pieces of art ever produced in the UK and I am delighted that we will be able to welcome it here in 2026.
'This loan is a symbol of our shared history with our friends in France, a relationship built over centuries and one that continues to endure.
'The British Museum is one of the world's most visited museums and is a fitting place to host this most treasured piece of our nation's history.'
The 70-metre-long work, which is more than 900-years-old, depicts the battle which saw William The Conqueror take the English throne from Harold Godwinson and become the first Norman king of England.
It is widely accepted to have been made in England during the 11th century and was likely to have been commissioned by Bishop Odo Of Bayeux. It has been on display in various locations across France during its history, including most recently at the Bayeux Museum in Normandy.
French President Emmanuel Macron said the exchanges of 'extraordinary national treasures' would be officially announced at the British Museum on Wednesday.
'The times of William the Conqueror are over – happily,' he said in an address to UK parliamentarians.
'I think these mutual loans of these extraordinary national treasures will involve fascinating human exchanges, which will certainly be positive for our future in terms of culture,' Mr Macron said.
Director of the British Museum Nicholas Cullinan said: 'The Bayeux Tapestry is one of the most important and unique cultural artefacts in the world, which illustrates the deep ties between Britain and France and has fascinated people across geographies and generations.
'It is hard to overstate the significance of this extraordinary opportunity of displaying it at the British Museum and we are profoundly grateful to everyone involved.
'This will be the first time the Bayeux Tapestry has been in the UK since it was made, almost 1,000-years-ago.
'We are also delighted to send the Lewis Chessmen, and some of our treasures from Sutton Hoo – the greatest archaeological discovery in Britain – to France in return.
'This is exactly the kind of international partnership that I want us to champion and take part in, sharing the best of our collection as widely as possible, and in return displaying global treasures never seen here before.'
The Sutton Hoo treasures, discovered as part of a seventh century Anglo-Saxon ship burial in Suffolk in 1939, provide insight into England during the period before the Norman Conquest.
Museums in Normandy will host the Sutton Hoo treasures while they are in France.
Further details of the exhibition will be announced by the British Museum in due course, with the loan set to form part of a season of culture in 2027 celebrating the 1,000th anniversary of the birth of William The Conqueror, and the Grand Depart of the 2027 Tour de France from the UK.
The tapestry will be displayed in the Sainsbury Exhibitions Gallery of the British Museum between September 2026 and July 2027.

Spencer Matthews makes brutal dig at Vogue Williams ahead of her 40th birthday

Irish TV presenter Vogue Williams married Made in Chelsea star Spencer Matthews in 2018, but he's made a savage age-related dig just months before the mum-of-three turns 40 Made in Chelsea star Spencer Matthews made a harsh dig towards his wife Vogue Williams as she prepares to celebrate her 40th birthday with friends and family. Influencer and Irish TV presenter Vogue will celebrate her birthday in October, with her nearest and dearest already planning a series of events to mark her milestone. Vogue, 39, married Spencer, 36, in June 2018, just a few months after they announced their engagement. They now share three children: Theodore, six, Gigi, four, and Otto, two. ‌ The couple, who are known for their playful back and forth, have been forced to dismiss rumours in recent months after speculation their marriage was on the rocks. But they've not let it stop their banter, with Spencer bravely making a cheeky dig at his wife's age. ‌ The ex-reality star was discussing his plans for Vogue's big day, and what he has planned for his wife of seven years. He quipped: 'Plenty going on for that, it's obviously a big one, it is a big birthday… I myself look forward to my 40th in four years' time." Moving on from his joke, he explained to "No I think it is going to be great. We are going to do lots of different things. ‌ "We have a few friendship groups. We have an Irish group, we have an English group. So we will probably have a party in Ireland, and we will do something at home as well. 'I might take her away and do something special as well. We will plan stuff in more detail, it is at the tail end of the year so thankfully we do have time to organise that. But Vogue is ahead of the curb on that one and we know a bunch of stuff that we are doing.' Spencer pulled it back after his savage dig, but it's not the first time he's made a joke at his wife's expense. During an appearance on comedian Joanne McNally's podcast, I Ghosted My Therapist, Vogue recalled a time her friend got her back up over one of Spencer's comments. ‌ Vogue remembered: "He [Spencer] said something about me having small t*ts and you went for him. You said, 'I'm only allowed to say that', he couldn't understand why he wasn't allowed to say it." Joanne, 41, confirmed: "Yeah, it was the tone or something, I just didn't like the tone of it." Vogue laughed: "That sounds like you might have been serious, 'I know you look at those nipples all day long, but doesn't mean you can slag them [off]'." ‌ The comedian explained: "It's all about the tone, there was no wink at the end, no, no, no, I intervened. I can say you've got s**t t*ts but if your husband says it, it's totally different." But Vogue certainly gives as good as she gets, with the Dublin native having her fair share of jabs at Spencer. Recently, she said she initially thought the business owner was a "sociopath" when she first met him. In a recent interview with the Sun, Vogue revealed that she already didn't like Spencer before she met him. The mother-of-three confessed: "I kind of met him with a preconceived idea, and I was like, 'I'm not going to like him' because I thought he was a sociopath." Vogue soon changed her mind, adding: "But after I met him, I loved his personality straight away . . . he was so sound, but I was being really good at being single and I wanted to stay single, so I thought, 'He's going to be a really good friend' — that's the first thing I thought."

The Lathums rock Glasgow TRNSMT 2025 before intimate gig

Their sound was as smooth as the material draping their platform. Golden microphone stands galore, they brought their blend of guitar-heavy rock to Glasgow Green. Perhaps in a mismatch of scheduling,g as they were competing with the likes of Scottish favourite Nina Nesbitt. Or the victims of a crowd eagerly awaiting acts like Jade and Gracie Abrams later in the day - it was a quieter gathering than they deserved. Blending between full-force rock tracks and indie numbers in the style of fellow English bands like The Courteeners, their depth of sound sets them apart. Their frontman, dressed in a cowboy hat, sunglasses, and a 70s-style cardigan, has an incredible voice, and the band provides harmonic backing that layers their sound. There's No Time At All was a highlight and got the mid-afternoon crowd dancing out of their lull. Singalong 'La La La La La, make peace not war' got the crowd further on side, and the crowds that had covered the sun seemed to be sung away. Rhythmically tight and with blistering solos, they're a no-nonsense guitar, drums and bass band. Fans heading there are in for an absolute treat from this six-piece sensational band. I'm sure that the hundreds that gathered at TRNSMT will have been turned into fans - I certainly was. And I've no doubt that they're a band that'll be back at Glasgow's festival - hopefully playing to a packed crowd like they deserve.

Orlando Bloom shrugs off Katy Perry split by singing his heart out at Oasis gig

But by the looks of things, there's nowhere else Orlando would rather have been than singing his heart out at an Oasis gig. Brushing off his recent personal drama after splitting from pop star Katy Perry, the actor, 48, had the time of his life at the Gallagher brothers' second home show in Manchester. While he's used to spending much of his time in the States to co-parent daughter Daisy Dove, the English movie star unleashed his truest, fullest Brit on Saturday night. Taking to Instagram with a warning message before spamming his seven million followers with content, he wrote: 'If you don't like @oasis swipe on- if you wanna see me run through some of my favourite karaoke numbers for laughs here you are lol'. What followed was an onslaught of videos from the gig, which was part of Liam and Noel's worldwide reunion tour, marking their first time sharing the stage since disbanding in 2009. Orlando was in his absolute element in the VIP area, surrounded by the Oasis kids, including Liam's sons Lennon, 25, and Gene, 24. The Lord of the Rings star belted out the band's biggest hits, such as Don't Look Back in Anger, Wonderwall, and Champagne Supernova. He jumped around without a care in the world and panned across the sold-out crowd sporting Oasis merch, arms in the air. There didn't appear to be a lyric Orlando didn't know, proving he could've been a backing singer while screaming along to Take Me Away, Half the World Away, and Live Forever. At the end of the night, he added: 'My 16 year old self who was at Knebworth just let it all hang out in Manchester what a night'. Ahead of the gig, Orlando let his fans know exactly how he was feeling, posting a video with the caption from his journey: 'Road to Oasis. Could not be more f'in excited'. 'It's gonna be karaoke all night,' he later declared, beaming at the camera. Orlando's love life has been a hot topic of conversation lately, as it was recently confirmed that he and fiancée Katy, 40, were no longer together romantically. After much speculation, the pair finally issued a statement via their representatives, telling Us Weekly: 'Due to the abundance of recent interest and conversation surrounding Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry's relationship, representatives have confirmed that Orlando and Katy have been shifting their relationship over the past many months to focus on coparenting.' They continued: 'They will continue to be seen together as a family, as their shared priority is—and always will be—raising their daughter with love, stability, and mutual respect.' Orlando and Katy got together in 2016, and after a brief split and reconciliation, they got engaged on Valentine's Day in 2019 and welcomed Daisy four years ago. Things appear to be pretty civil between the exes now, though, as they were photographed together just days after their split was confirmed, partying with Jeff and Lauren Bezos on their honeymoon. Pirates of the Caribbean star Orlando had already attended the wedding itself alone, while Katy was touring in Australia. The Roar hitmaker did, however, previously attend Lauren's star-studded bachelorette party in Paris, having also been a passenger alongside her for their brief Blue Origin trip to space earlier in the year. While it had been claimed Katy felt hurt by Orlando partying with fellow A-listers, such as Sydney Sweeney and Kim Kardashian, at the Bezos nuptials, sources have insisted there's no real bad blood. Ahead of the split statement being made public, an insider said: 'Katy and Orlando have split but are amicable. 'It's not contentious at the moment. Katy is, of course, upset but is relieved not to have to go through another divorce, as that was the worst time in her life.' The Teenage Dream singer was previously married to Russell Brand from 2010 to 2012. In a now-famously viral moment, the Get Him to the Greek actor told Katy he wanted a divorce via text message before she was due on stage. More Trending Meanwhile, she and Orlando, who was married to Miranda Kerr from 2010 to 2013, were initially due to marry in Japan in 2020 with 150 guests in attendance. Alas, they postponed the celebrations due to the pandemic. Speaking in 2022, Katy admitted that they were still get to decide on a location, telling the Kyle & Jackie O radio show: 'It's a destination location that, like, you know, we're still trying for it to work out. 'But every couple of months it's like, 'New variant! New variant! New variant!'' Got a story?
