Prison bars fashioned into sonic sculpture for musical performance at Gallery 400

Chicago Tribune4 days ago
Prison bars that were once used as instruments of confinement at the Cook County Jail will be repurposed as musical instruments as part of a performance Wednesday by Chicago-based artist Maria Gaspar.
The performance, titled 'We Lit the Fire and Trusted the Heat (after Angela Davis),' aims to cultivate an environment where the US carceral system is undone, Gaspar said.
At Gallery 400 of the University of Illinois Chicago, from which Gaspar graduated, the performance will use a sonic sculpture — made of glass rods cast from iron prison bars salvaged from the now-demolished Division I building, the oldest section of the jail — to express what liberation sounds like.
Growing up in Little Village, Gaspar lived only a few blocks from the jail, and it taught her a lot about her community, she said.
'As a kid, for me, Little Village is a neighborhood about resiliency,' Gaspar said. 'It's about pride, cultural pride, it's about struggle and it's about carcerality.'
Toward the end of her preteen years, Gaspar said, she was enrolled in a 'scared straight' type of program without her knowledge. She toured Division 1 of the jail for hours, she said, and seeing men behind bars was 'a disturbing experience.'
She said she didn't have political awareness because she was so young. 'Now, as an adult with a critical lens and somebody who's a teacher and a mother,' Gaspar said, 'I think what was happening is a kind of fear tactic that was, in many ways, targeting a group of immigrant kids and making them feel like they were criminals.'
She sees the experience as the pivotal moment that inspired her to evolve and learn more about politics.
Having the jail as the backdrop of her childhood is not only symbolic of the performance, she said, but also how she got her start with the project.
In 2021, when Division 1 was being torn down, Gaspar went to the street and recorded the demolition every day, from start to finish. The entire video came out to 60 hours and 20 minutes, and it is now used as a backdrop for the upcoming show.
She had no plans for a performance until a judge came up to her one day while she was filming to talk to her. After a few moments, he left and came back to hand her a prison bar.
'That then led to scavenging more of the materials and then creating this sonic structure,' she said.
The performance is in collaboration with Thaddeus Tukes, a vibraphonist from Chicago. The two had a connection and didn't know it prior to meeting about this show. Gaspar and Tukes both attended Whitney M. Young Magnet High School on the Near West Side, but at different times.
Gaspar chose to collaborate with Tukes, she said, because he understands the ideas behind the project: mass incarceration and abolitionism. Gaspar said she and Tukes both have a history of working in juvenile detention.
'There were a lot of commonalities and I really love Thaddeus' spirit,' she said. 'He's really open. He enjoys improvisation. But he's also this incredible composer, and he's really great at working with people. And I think those are all really wonderful elements for collaboration.'
At a time when people are being split up and society feels divided, Gaspar said, she hopes her performance can use sound as a tool to create meaning and a sense of connection.
'I'm really just enjoying this time of exploration and experimentation of thinking about how sound can be both this beautiful visceral experience, but also a very political one too,' she said.
Following the free performance, Gaspar and Tukes will hold a conversation with Jimmy Soto, a paralegal and human rights activist.

LA home linked to ‘TikTok cult' pastor seen in Netflix docuseries raided in sex-trafficking probe

Federal agents descended upon a California home connected to the 'TikTok Cult' pastor who was the subject of a recent Netflix documentary series Friday — as part of an investigation into sex trafficking and other criminal claims. Several people were detained after a Tujunga home partially owned by Pastor Robert Shinn was raided by agents from the FBI, IRS, US Postal Service and Department of Labor, the Los Angeles Times reported. Officials served warrants related to allegations of sex trafficking, money laundering, mail fraud, tax evasion and COVID-19-related fraud, according to the outlet. Advertisement 3 Federal agents raided a home home partially owned by Pastor Robert Shinn. KTLA 5 The identities of those detained were not immediately clear. At least six handcuffed people and one woman holding a child were seen in KTLA chopper footage of the raid of the residence, which featured in the Netflix docuseries 'Dancing for the Devil: The 7M TikTok Cult,' the station reported. Advertisement One witness reported hearing flash-bang grenades go off at the start of the 6 a.m. law enforcement operation, according to the LA Times. Self-proclaimed 'man of God' Shinn, who founded Shekinah Church in 1994, helped create 7M Films in 2021, and the LA-based talent management company allegedly lured dancers with promises of turning them into TikTok stars. Some of those dancers were also conscripted into the Shekinah Church and acted as recruiters for 7M, which they claim is inseparable from the religious organization. Former members of Shekinah Church who also worked for 7M films alleged Shinn abused and manipulated them, with some even accusing the guru of sexual assault. Advertisement 3 A source claimed the property involved in this search warrant was the same home that was at the center of the series, KTLA reported. KTLA 5 3 Several people were detained during the raid. KTLA 5 Melanie Goldman, a former dancer and parishioner, claimed in the documentary that she saw 'half a dozen girls' run into the church 'screaming at the top of their lungs,' TV Insider reported. Other former dancers also claimed that there is no distinction between 7M and the church, with Shinn instructing members in fiery sermons shown in the doc to 'die to' their families, or no longer have contact with them. Advertisement Dancer Aubrey Fisher, a former 7M and Shekinah member, claimed Shinn forced him to give as much as 70% of his income to the twisted church — including a 10% 'man of God fee' for himself, according to the outlet. Former member Melanie Wilking went viral with a 2022 Instagram plea to try and reach her sister Miranda, who was 'no longer in control' of her life. The siblings had a popular joint TikTok page when they joined 7M and had a falling out when Melanie left over concerns about Shinn's control over members, according to People, but have since reconciled. Shinn has previously denied claims that the Shenikah Church and 7M are affiliated, TV Insider reported. In 2022, he filed a defamation lawsuit against several former church members after they referred to the organization as a cult, CNN reported last year.

Astronomer hires Gwyneth Paltrow with a wink after 'kiss cam' viral video

Astronomer has hired Gwyneth Paltrow as a "temporary spokesperson" following the social media firestorm that involved two now-former company executives and a Coldplay concert 'kiss cam" last week. Paltrow appeared in a television-style spot on Astronomer's social media on Friday making a pitch for the company's everyday strengths. "Astronomer has gotten a lot of questions over the last few days, and they wanted me to answer the most common ones," said Paltrow, who split with Coldplay singer Chris Martin in 2014. Astronomer made headlines after internet sleuths identified its CEO and chief people officer as the man and woman seen embracing and then hiding their faces on a "kiss cam" at the July 16 concert. Both have since resigned. In the Astronomer video, Paltrow cut off a question that started with "OMG!" to emphatically say, "Yes, Astronomer is the best place to run Apache Airflow." "We've been thrilled so many people have a newfound interest in data workflow automation," she added. She interrupted another question — "How is your social media team holding ..." — to make a pitch for an Astronomer conference in September. Paltrow concluded, 'We will now be returning to what we do best — delivering game-changing results for our customers.' CEO Andy Byron resigned on July 19, and Chief People Officer Kristin Cabot followed on Thursday, according to statements from the company. Their body language after the camera captured them in an embrace led Martin to remark on stage, 'Either they're having an affair or they're just very shy.' Astronomer said afterward it was investigating the incident. 'Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability,' it said on July 18. The company confirmed Thursday that Cabot was the woman in the video. Neither she nor Byron have responded to requests for comment. Astronomer, a New York-based company, helps companies develop, grow, and analyze products using artificial intelligence.
