Drag queen Jiggly Caliente dies aged 44 after ‘severe infection'

The Guardian27-04-2025
Drag queen Jiggly Caliente has died at the age of 44 after suffering from a 'severe infection', her family has confirmed. The performer, whose real name was Bianca Castro-Arabejo, rose to fame after taking part in the fourth season of RuPaul's Drag Race.
Caliente's family announced on Thursday that the Filipino-American drag performer had part of her leg amputated due to a 'severe infection'.
The drag star's family wrote on Instagram that she was 'cherished by many' for her career, and died on Sunday at 4:42am 'surrounded by her loving family and close friends'.
On Instagram, BBC Radio 2 DJ and RuPaul's Drag Race judge Michelle Visage wrote: 'My jiggles …. The laughter was endless, our talks were special, your energy was contagious.
'You were and remain so very loved. This world has lost an angel and we want you to soar high ….. I love you so much honey.'
A statement from Caliente's family said the star was a 'luminous presence' in the worlds of entertainment and advocacy, adding that she would be deeply missed and eternally remembered.
Her family said: 'She touched countless lives through her artistry, activism, and the genuine connection she fostered with fans around the world.
'Though her physical presence is gone, the joy she shared and the space she helped create for so many will remain for ever.'
After publicly coming out as transgender, Caliente was a contestant on RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars season six and was set to judge the latest season of spin-off programme, Drag Race Philippines, after being appointed as a judge when the show began airing in 2022.
A statement shared by the show and producers World Of Wonder on social media said they were 'devastated' and asked for Caliente's family to be given the privacy and space to grieve their 'tremendous loss'.
They added: 'Jiggly's humour, love, and light touched so many in the Drag Race family and beyond. Her legacy will continue to uplift the communities she advocated for.'
Born on 29 November 1980, Caliente moved from the Philippines to New York when she was a child. She was praised in her first drag series by the judges for her sense of humour, and impressive lip-syncs when she battled not to leave the competition early, while also struggling with sewing garments during some challenges.
She was eliminated before the final, with drag queen Sharon Needles going on to be crowned champion in 2012.
Since the franchise began in 2009, the reality show has seen the deaths of RuPaul's Drag Race UK stars Cherry Valentine, 28, and The Vivienne, 32, as well as US competitors Sahara Davenport, 27, and Chi Chi DeVayne, 34.

Shoppers divided as controversial new Maltesers chocolate lands in Morrisons stores

That's just the start of the supermarket surprises this week CHOC SHOCK Shoppers divided as controversial new Maltesers chocolate lands in Morrisons stores Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) CHOCOLATE fans are in for a surprise as a brand-new festive Maltesers treat has landed on shelves — in the middle of summer. The Gingerbread Flavour Maltesers Reindeer has been spotted in Morrisons stores across the UK, leaving shoppers both delighted and baffled. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 Retailers are increasingly bringing in seasonal or limited-edition products earlier in the year — hoping to boost excitement Credit: facebook/@newfoodsuk One eagle-eyed customer shared the find on Facebook, posting: 'Gingerbread Flavour Malteasers Reindeer spotted online at Morrisons.' The post quickly sparked a flurry of reactions, with chocolate lovers flooding the comments section. One person said: 'mmmmmmm,' clearly excited to see the seasonal sweet. But others weren't impressed, saying the festive snack was far too early for shelves. Another wrote: 'Really? It's July.' A third joked: 'Gets any easier and jesus would be turning is his cave tomb as we put christmas stock out.' And one added: 'They haven't even got the Back to School stuff out yet.' Some simply tagged their mates in disbelief, while others asked if anyone had actually tried them yet. It's not just Morrisons jumping the gun on seasonal stock — other supermarkets have also caused a stir with early releases and unusual chocolate twists. We've outdone ourselves with this one' say Cadbury Ireland as they reveal new limited edition bar 'coming soon Meanwhile, Asda shoppers spotted Cadbury Dairy Milk Mint Bars hitting shelves unexpectedly in early June, drawing mixed reviews. And B&M shocked chocoholics by dropping a Caramilk Mint Twirl, a flavour not yet seen in the big four supermarkets. Even TK Maxx — better known for fashion and homeware — has been selling supermarket-style chocolate and sweets, with shelves packed full of branded snacks, seasonal American imports, and quirky flavours. Retailers are increasingly bringing in seasonal or limited-edition products earlier in the year — hoping to boost excitement and test demand ahead of busy periods like Halloween and Christmas. But while some shoppers welcome the early treats, others say it ruins the excitement when festive favourites appear months in advance. How to save money on chocolate We all love a bit of chocolate from now and then, but you don't have to break the bank buying your favourite bar. Consumer reporter Sam Walker reveals how to cut costs... Go own brand - if you're not too fussed about flavour and just want to supplant your chocolate cravings, you'll save by going for the supermarket's own brand bars. Shop around - if you've spotted your favourite variety at the supermarket, make sure you check if it's cheaper elsewhere. Websites like let you compare prices on products across all the major chains to see if you're getting the best deal. Look out for yellow stickers - supermarket staff put yellow, and sometimes orange and red, stickers on to products to show they've been reduced. They usually do this if the product is coming to the end of its best-before date or the packaging is slightly damaged. Buy bigger bars - most of the time, but not always, chocolate is cheaper per 100g the larger the bar. So if you've got the appetite, and you were going to buy a hefty amount of chocolate anyway, you might as well go bigger.

Strictly Come Dancing star Ore Oduba 'ashamed and embarrassed' after falling for scam

Strictly star Ore Oduba said he is 'ashamed', 'embarrassed', and 'human' after falling for a scam where he thought he received an exciting email from American podcaster Mel Robbins Strictly Come Dancing star Ore Oduba was reduced to tears after falling for a scam. The presenter explained he had been the victim of an elaborate online scam where he thought he had received a message from American podcaster Mel Robbins. ‌ Mel Robbins is the writer of transformational books, including The 5 Second Rule, The High 5 Habit, and The Let Them Theory. The TV star explained how the scammers impersonated the globally renowned author, speaker, and podcast host after he had appeared on Loose Women and claimed her philosophy 'changed his life'. ‌ Speaking to his Instagram followers, he explained: 'I reposted that interview, I tagged the Mel Robbins podcast, tagged the Let Me theory, tagged Mel, tagged everybody who cared, and then I got an email from my agent who forwarded on an email from the team at the Mel Robbins podcast.' ‌ Revealing his initial emotions, he said: 'I could have cried, they knew who I was! I got an email from the Mel Robbins podcast team. I told Mel everything. How she had changed my life. And I literally said at the end of the email, even for you to know who I am, is everything. Thank you so much for getting in touch.' Unfortunately, the email was later revealed to be a scam, and Ore revealed he was 'ashamed' and 'embarrassed' to have fallen for the con. Tears filled the TV star's eyes as he explained how overjoyed he was at first glance and reflected on the irony as he once hosted a TV show about scammers called Claimed And Shamed. ‌ He said in the video: 'I'm reading this back and I know exactly how it made me feel at the time. I wrote back and I said, 'Mel, I'm holding back tears. Is this for real? You must have AI helping you correspond with all of these fans', Mel wrote back, 'of course it's me, it's Mel Robbins'.'. Ore added that he 'never thought' he would be someone who would be scammed and said he was fortunate to have spotted the scam before being conned out of giving any money . ‌ He wrote in an in-depth caption: 'I'm ashamed, I'm embarrassed, and I'm human. Did not think I would be the kind of person who could be scammed, but this proves it really can happen to anyone. Especially with the help and manipulation of AI. I'm terrified how easily I was 'hooked'. It was SO convincing, it's scary.' The TV star urged people to listen to their 'gut' as he 'turned a blind eye' to something he wanted to be true. He said: ''I've made no secret of how much Mel Robbins, her book and podcast have helped me through a really difficult period. Truth is I turned an emotional blind eye to something I so deeply wanted to believe was for me and nearly got myself into a whole heap of trouble (sidenote.. I've realised in making this video how often we do the same thing in relationships too!) "Listen to your gut, it's most likely telling you the truth. And don't get scammed, it's no fun. Still inspired by and love Mel Robbins and so grateful to them for their swift response. I got lucky - it could so easily have been too late.'

D-Day veteran and TikTok star 'Papa Jake' Larson dies at 102

He was among the nearly 160,000 Allied troops who stormed the Normandy shore on D-Day, June 6, 1944, surviving machine-gun fire when he landed on Omaha Beach. He made it unhurt to the bluffs that overlook the beach, then studded with German gun emplacements that mowed down American soldiers. "We are the lucky ones," Larson told The Associated Press at the 81st anniversary of D-Day in June, speaking amid the immaculate rows of graves at the American cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach. "We are their family. We have the responsibility to honor these guys who gave us a chance to be alive." He went on to fight through the Battle of the Bulge, a grueling month-long fight in Belgium and Luxembourg that was one of the defining moments of the war and of Hitler's defeat. His service earned him a Bronze Star and a French Legion of Honor award. In recent years, Larson made repeated trips to Normandy for D-Day commemorations — and at every stop, "Papa Jake" was greeted by people asking for a selfie. In return, he offered up a big hug, to their greatest joy. One memorable encounter came in 2023, when he came across Bill Gladden, a then-99-year-old British veteran who survived a glider landing on D-Day and a bullet that tore through his ankle. "I want to give you a hug, thank you. I got tears in my eyes. We were meant to meet," Larson told Gladden, as their hands, lined and spotted with age, clasped tightly. Gladden died the following year. In his TikTok posts and interviews, Larson combined humorous anecdotes with somber reminders about the horrors of war. Reflecting to AP on the three years he was in Europe, Larson said he is "no hero." Speaking in 2024, he also had a message to world leaders: "Make peace not war." He often called himself "the luckiest man in the world," and expressed awe at all the attention he was getting. "I'm just a country boy. Now I'm a star on TikTok," he told AP in 2023. "I'm a legend! I didn't plan this, it came about." Small-town museums and groups around Normandy that work to honor D-Day's heroes and fallen shared tributes online to Larson, one of their most loyal visitors. "He was an exceptional witness and bearer of memory," the Overlord Museum posted on Facebook. "He came every year to the museum, with his smile, his humility and his tales that touched all generations. His stories will continue to live. Rest in peace Papa Jake," it read.
